l How well you see.
l Your ability to concentrate.
l How quickly you make decisions under stress to avoid an accident.
The tips listed below are suggestions to help you cope with the ever cha\
nging traffic environment.
l Never drink and drive.
l If you are taking any medication, consult your physician about its poten\
tial effects on your driving
abilities.
l Take a driver-retraining course.
l Have your eyes checked regularly.
l Keep your windshield and headlights clean.
l Replace wiper blades when they start to leave streaks.
l Take into account the traffic, road, and weather conditions, particularl\
y with regard to stopping
distance.

If you believe that your vehicle has a defect which could cause a crash \
or could cause injury or death,
you should immediately inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Admini\
stration (NHTSA) in
addition to notifying Volvo Cars of North America, LLC. If NHTSA receive\
s similar complaints, it may
open an investigation, and if it finds that a safety defect exists in a \
group of vehicles, it may order a
recall and remedy campaign. However, NHTSA cannot become involved in ind\
ividual problems
between you, your retailer, or Volvo Cars of North America, LLC. To cont\
act NHTSA, you may either
call the Auto Safety Hotline toll-free at 1-888-327-4236

light will light up if the
computer senses a condition that potentially may need correcting. When t\
his happens, please have your
vehicle checked by a Volvo retailer as soon as possible.
A CHECK ENGINE light may have many causes. Sometimes, you may not notice\
a change in your
vehicle's behavior. Even so, an uncorrected condition could hurt fuel ec\
onomy, emission cleanliness, and
driveability. Extended driving without correcting the cause could even d\
amage other components in

the vehicle impossible to steer.
pg. 127 Starting and driving
General driving information
Economical driving conserves natural resources
Better driving economy may be obtained by thinking ahead, avoiding rapid\
starts and stops and
adjusting the speed of your vehicle to immediate traffic conditions. Obs\
erve the following rules:
l Bring the engine to normal operating temperature as soon as possible by \
driving with a light foot on
the accelerator pedal for the first few minutes of operation. A cold eng\
ine uses more fuel and is subject
to increased wear.
l Whenever possible, avoid using the vehicle for driving short distances. \
This does not allow the engine
to reach normal operating temperature.
l Drive carefully and avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking.
l Do not exceed posted speed limits.
l Avoid carrying unnecessary items (extra load) in the vehicle.
l Maintain correct tire pressure. Check tire pressure regularly (when tir\
es are cold).
l Remove snow tires when threat of snow or ice has ended.
l Note that roof racks, ski racks, etc, increase air resistance and also f\
uel consumption.
l Avoid using automatic transmission kickdown feature unless necessary.
l However, at higher driving speeds, fuel consumption will be lower with t\
he air conditioning on and
the windows closed than with the air conditioning off and the windows op\
en.
l Using the onboard trip computer's fuel consumption modes can help you le\
arn how to drive more
economically.
Other factors that decrease gas mileage are:
l Dirty air cleaner
l Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter
l Dragging brakes
l Incorrect front end alignment. Some of the above mentioned items and oth\
ers are checked at the
standard Maintenance Service intervals.
NOTE: Vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions should use (D)rive as \
often as possible and
avoid using "kickdown" to help improve fuel economy.

CAUTION!
Drive slowly and carefully if going through standing water (i.e. floode\
d roadways, etc.). Damage to
the engine could result if excess water is drawn in through the air inta\
ke system. Never drive the
vehicle in water deeper than 1 foot (300 mm).
Weight distribution affects handling
At the specified curb weight your vehicle has a tendency to understeer, \
which means that the steering
wheel has to be turned more than might seem appropriate for the curvatur\
e of a bend.
This ensures good stability and reduces the risk of rear wheel skid. Rem\
ember that these properties can
alter with the vehicle load.
The heavier the load in the cargo area (max. 220 lbs, 100 kg), the les\
s the tendency to understeer.
Handling, roadholding
Vehicle load, tire design and inflation pressure all affect vehicle hand\
ling. Therefore, check that the tires
are inflated to the recommended pressure according to the vehicle load. \
See "Tire pressure" section.
pg. 128 Starting and driving
General driving information
Loads should be distributed so that capacity weight or maximum permissib\
le axle loads are not exceeded.
Speed-sensitive power steering (Option on certain models)
With this feature, the steering is most responsive at lower speeds to ma\
ke parking, driving in city traffic,
etc., easier. The effect of the power steering diminishes as you acceler\
ate for greater stability at highway
speeds.
Driving through water
The vehicle can be driven through water up to a depth of approximately 9\
in. (25 cm), at a maximum
speed of 6 mph (10 km/h). Take particular care when driving through fl\
owing water.
Clean the electrical connections for trailer wiring after driving in mud\
or water.
When driving through water, maintain low speed and do not stop in the wa\
ter.
WARNING!
After driving through water, press lightly on the brake pedal to ensure \
that the brakes are functioning
normally. Water or mud can make the brake linings slippery, resulting in\
delayed braking effect.

CAUTION!
l Engine damage will occur if water is drawn into the air cleaner.
l If the vehicle is driven through water deeper than 9 in (25 cm), water\
may enter the differential and
the transmission. This reduces the oil's lubricating capacity and may sh\
orten the service life of these
components.
l Do not allow the vehicle to stand in water up to the door sills longer t\
han absolutely necessary.
This could result in electrical malfunctions.
l If the engine has been stopped while the car is in water, do not attempt\
to restart the engine. Have
the car towed out of the water.

Depress the clutch pedal completely when changing gears
1.
Remove your foot from the clutch pedal while driving. The shift pattern \
should be followed. Overdrive
(5th gear) should be used as often as possible to help improve fuel ec\
onomy.
1. Clutch interlock
The clutch must be fully depressed before you can start your vehicle. If\
the clutch is not depressed, it will not be
possible to start the engine.

This mode is recommended for long-distance driving, or when driving in s\
lippery conditions. The
indicator light in the button will be off when this mode is selected.
If Comfort mode was selected when the engine was switched off, this mode\
will still be active when the
engine is restarted.
Sport
In this mode, shock absorption is stiffer to reduce the vehicle's body s\
way during cornering and to
provide more immediate steering response. The indicator light in the but\
ton will come on to indicate that
Sport mode has been selected.
If this setting was selected when the engine was switched off, Sport mod\
e will still be active when the
engine is restarted.
Advanced sport (V70 R only)
In this mode, movement of the shock absorbers is minimal, response from \
pressure on the throttle pedal
is more direct, and body sway in curves or when cornering is sharply red\
uced.
If Advanced sport mode was selected when the engine was switched off, Sport mode will be active
when the engine is restarted.

Brake system
BRAKE Brake circuit malfunction
The brake system is a hydraulic system consisting of two master cylinder\
s and two separate brake
circuits. If a problem should occur in one of these circuits, it is stil\
l possible to stop the vehicle with the
other brake circuit.
If the brake pedal must be depressed farther than normal and requires gr\
eater foot pressure, the stopping
distance will be longer.
A warning light in the instrument panel will light up to warn the driver\
that a fault has occurred.
If this light comes on while driving or braking, stop immediately and ch\
eck the brake fluid level in the

reservoir.
NOTE: Press the brake pedal hard and maintain pressure on the pedal - do not \
pump the brakes.
WARNING!
If the fluid level is below the MIN mark in the reservoir or if a "Brake\
failure - Service urgent"
message is displayed in the text window: DO NOT DRIVE. Have the vehicle \
towed to a Volvo
retailer and have the brake system inspected.
NOTE: When the vehicle is at a standstill and the engine is idling, e.g. at a\
traffic light and the brake
pedal is depressed, the pedal may go down slightly. This is a normal fun\
ction of the power-assisted
brake system.
Power brakes function only when the engine is running
The power brakes utilize vacuum pressure which is only created when the \
engine is running. Never let
the vehicle roll to a stop with the engine switched off.
If the power brakes are not working, the brake pedal must be pressed app\
roximately four times harder
than usual to make up for the lack of power assistance. This can happen \
for example when towing your
vehicle or if the engine is switched off when the vehicle is rolling. Th\
e brake pedal feels harder than
usual.
Water on brake discs and brake pads affects braking
Driving in rain and slush or passing through an automatic car wash can c\
ause water to collect on the
brake discs and pads. This will cause a delay in braking effect when the\
pedal is depressed. To avoid
such a delay when the brakes are needed, depress the pedal occasionally \
when driving through rain,
slush etc. This will remove the water from the brakes. Check that brake \
application feels normal. This
should also be done after washing or starting in very damp or cold weath\
er.
Severe strain on the brake system
The brakes will be subject to severe strain when driving in mountains or\
hilly areas or towing. Vehicle
speed is usually slower, which means that the cooling of the brakes is l\
ess efficient than when driving on
level roads. To reduce the strain on the brakes, shift into a lower gear\
and let the engine help with the
braking. Do not forget that, if you are towing a trailer, the brakes wil\
l be subjected to a greater than
normal load.

Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
If the warning lamp lights up there is a malfunction of the ABS system (\
the standard braking system will
however function) and the vehicle should be driven cautiously to a Volv\
o retailer for inspection. The
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) helps to improve vehicle control (stop\
ping and steering) during severe
braking conditions by limiting brake lockup. When the system "senses" im\
pending lockup, braking
pressure is automatically modulated in order to help prevent lockup, whi\
ch could lead to a skid.
The system performs a self-diagnostic test when the engine is started an\
d when the vehicle first
reaches a speed of approximately 12 mph (20 km/h). The brake pedal will pulsate several times and a
sound may be audible from the ABS control module. This is normal.
To obtain optimal effect from the ABS system, constant pressure should b\
e kept on the brake pedal. Do
not pump the brake pedal.
The switching of the ABS modulator will be audible and the brake pedal w\
ill pulsate during braking.
Please be aware that ABS does not increase the absolute braking potentia\
l of the vehicle. While control
will be enhanced, ABS will not shorten stopping distances on slippery su\
rfaces.
ABS with EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution)
EBD is an integrated part of the ABS system. EBD regulates the hydraulic\
pressure to the rear brakes to
help provide optimal braking capacity. The brake pedal will pulsate duri\
ng braking, which is normal.
If the BRAKE and ABS warning lights come on at the same time, this could\
indicate a fault in the brake
system.
- Stop the vehicle in a suitable place and switch off the engine.
- Restart the engine.
- If both warning lights go off, no further action is required.
- If both lights are still on after the engine has been restarted, switc\
h off the engine again and check the
brake fluid level (see
page 193 for the location of the brake fluid reservoir).
WARNING!
If the fluid level is below the MIN mark in the reservoir or if a "Brake\
failure - Service urgent"
message is displayed in the text window: DO NOT DRIVE. Have the vehicle \
towed to a Volvo
retailer and have the brake system inspected.
- If the brake fluid level is above the MIN mark, drive carefully to an \
authorized Volvo retailer and have
the brake system inspected.
Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA)
The EBA function is designed to provide full brake effect immediately in\
the event of sudden, hard
braking. The system is activated by the speed with which you depress the\
brake pedal.
