Opening and closing the hood The hood is opened by releasing it from the pas- senger compartment and then by using the han-dle under the front edge of the hood.
Opening
With the hood completely closed, pull the control (located to the left of the brakepedal).
Turn the handle under the front edge of the hood counterclockwise to release it from thelock and lift.
Warning–hood not closed
When the hood lock has been com- pletely released, this symbol and agraphic will illuminate in the instrumentpanel and an audible signal will be
given. If the vehicle begins to roll, the audible sig-nal will be repeated several times. For additional information, see also the article "Door and seat belt reminders."
NOTE
If the warning symbol remains on or if the audible signal is given even if the hood iscompletely closed and locked, consult atrained and qualified Volvo service technician.
Closing1. Press down the hood until it begins to close due to its own weight.
2. When the handle under the front edge of the hood is in the lock, press down on the hood to close it completely.
WARNING
• Be sure the hood is completely unob- structed while it is being closed.
• Check that the hood locks properly whenclosed. It must audibly lock on both sides.
• Never drive if the hood is not completelyclosed and locked.
• While driving, if there are any indicationsthat the hood is not locked in the closedposition, stop safely as soon as possibleand close it completely.

Engine compartment overview
The engine compartment overview shows some maintenance points.
Some of the components in the vehicle's electri- cal drive system are located in the engine com-partment.
WARNING
• Orange cables should only be handled by a trained and qualified Volvo service tech-nician.
• A number of the vehicle's componentsuse high voltage and can be very danger-ous if handled improperly.
• Do not touch any components that havenot been clearly described/explained inthis manual.
• Use caution when checking/refilling flu-ids in the engine compartment.
• The cooling fan (located at the front ofthe engine compartment, behind the radi-ator) may start or continue to operate (forup to 6 minutes) after the engine hasbeen switched off.
• Engine cleaning should only be done by aworkshop. If engine cleaning agents areused when the engine has been running,there may a fire risk.
• Before performing any operations in theengine compartment, the ignition shouldalways be completely switched off (in mode
0) and there should be no remote
keys in the passenger compartment. Thegear selector should be in the P (park)
position. If the engine has been running, wait until it has cooled before touchingany components in the engine compart-ment.

CAUTION
•Not checking the oil level regularly can result in serious engine damage if the oillevel becomes too low.
• Oil that is lower than the specified qualitycan damage the engine.
• Volvo does not recommend the use of oiladditives.
• Always add oil of the same type and vis-cosity as already used.
• Oil changes should be carried out by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
• Using oil of higher than the specifiedquality is permitted and may be neces-sary for demanding driving.

Checking and refilling engine oil The oil level is checked electronically.

It may be necessary to top up engine oil between regularly scheduled services. No action is necessary until a message is dis- played in the instrument panel.

Do not allow oil to spill onto or come into contact with hot exhaust pipe surfaces.

Checking the oil levelThe oil level can be checked in the center display when theengine is not running. From the center display's Home view, swipe the screenfrom right to left to open App
view. Tap
Car status and then tap Status to
show the oil level.

The oil level should be checked at regular inter- vals, particularly during the period up to the firstscheduled maintenance service. If the oil level sensor indicates that the level is too low, using the correct oil, top up with theamount of oil indicated as soon as possible.

CAUTION
•Before driving into an automatic car wash, turn off the optional rain sensor toavoid damaging the windshield wipers.
• Make sure that side view mirrors, auxiliarylamps, etc, are secure, and that anyantenna(s) are retracted or removed. Oth-erwise there is risk of the machine dis-lodging them.
• Chromed wheels:
Clean chrome-plated
wheels using the same detergents usedfor the body of the vehicle. Aggressivewheel-cleaning agents can permanentlystain chrome-plated wheels.
WARNING
• When the vehicle is driven immediately after being washed, apply the brakes,including the parking brake, several timesin order to remove any moisture from thebrake linings.
• Engine cleaning agents should not beused when the engine is warm. This con-stitutes a fire risk.
Exterior componentsVolvo recommends the use of special cleaning products, available at your Volvo retailer, forcleaning colored plastic, rubber, or ornamentalcomponents such as chromed strips on the exte- rior of your vehicle. The instructions for usingthese products should be followed carefully. Sol-vents or stain removers should not be used.

Avoid waxing or polishing plastic or rub- ber components
• Polishing chromed strips can wear awayor damage the surface
• Polishes containing abrasive substancesshould not be used

Cleaning the interior
Only use cleaning agents and car care products recommended by Volvo. Clean regularly and fol-low the instructions included with the car careproduct.
CAUTION
• Under no circumstances should gasoline, naphtha or similar cleaning agents beused on the plastic or the leather sincethese can cause damage.
• Take extra care when removing stainssuch as ink or lipstick since the coloringcan spread.
• Use solvents sparingly. Too much solventcan damage the seat padding.
• Start from the outside of the stain andwork toward the center.
• Sharp objects (e.g. pencils or pens in apocket) or Velcro fasteners on clothingmay damage the textile upholstery.
• Clothing that is not colorfast, such asnew jeans or suede garments, may stainthe upholstery.
Fabric upholstery and ceiling linerClean with soapy water or a detergent. For more difficult spots caused by oil, ice cream, shoe pol-ish, grease, etc., use a clothing/fabric stainremover. Consult your Volvo retailer.

CAUTION
•Do not use cleaning agents with high alcohol content such as washer fluid toclean instrument panel glass.
• Never spray cleaning agents or waterdirectly onto components with electricalbuttons or controls. Clean components ofthis type by applying the cleaning agent/water sparingly to a cloth and wiping thecomponents so that no liquid penetratesinto these components.
Cleaning the seat beltsClean only with lukewarm water and a mild soap solution.
Cleaning floor matsThe floor mats should be vacuumed or brushedclean regularly, especially during winter whenthey should be taken out for drying. Spots on tex-tile mats can be removed with a mild detergent.For best protection in winter, Volvo recommendsthe use of Volvo rubber floor mats. Consult yourVolvo retailer.
WARNING
•
Never use more than one floor mat at a time on the driver's floor. Before driving,remove the original mat from the driver'sseat floor before using any other type offloor mat. Any mat used in this positionshould be securely and properly anchoredin the attaching pins. An extra mat on thedriver's floor can cause the acceleratorand/or brake pedal to catch. Check thatthe movement of these pedals is notimpeded.
• Volvo's floor mats are specially manufac-tured for your car. They must be firmlysecured in the clips on the floor so thatthey cannot slide and become trappedunder the pedals on the driver's side.

Cleaning the center display
Marks, stains, etc., on the center display may affect its performance and readability. Clean itregularly with a microfiber cloth.
Center display's Home button
To clean the center display:
1. Turn off the display by pressing and holding the Home button.
2. Wipe the screen clean with the microfiber cloth provided or use a similar one, using a small, circular motion. If necessary, moistenthe cloth slightly.
3. Reactivate the display by pressing the Home button briefly.
