Stability system This symbol flashes when the stability system is actively work-ing to stabilize the vehicle. If thesymbol glows steadily, there is afault in the system.
Stability system, Sport mode This symbol illuminates when Sport mode is activated. Sportmode offers a more active drivingexperience. If the system detectsthat accelerator pedal, steeringwheel and cornering movementsare more active than in normaldriving, it allows a certain level ofcontrolled lateral movement ofthe rear wheels before interven-ing and stabilizing the vehicle.

Electronic Stability Control in sport mode The stability system (ESC 6
) is always acti-
vated and cannot be switched off. However, the driver can select
ESC Sport Mode,
which offers more active driving characteris- tics.
With the ESC Sport Mode sub-function
selected, intervention from the system is reduced and more lateral movement is permit-ted, giving the driver more control of the vehi-cle than usual. When
ESC Sport Mode is selected, the func-
tion may seem to be disabled even though it continues to assist the driver.
NOTE
When ESC Sport Mode is selected, the
trailer stabilizer (TSA 7
) is switched off.
ESC Sport Mode also helps provide more
traction, even if the vehicle gets stuck or is driving on a loose surface such as deep snowor loose sand.

) is always acti-
vated and cannot be switched off. However, the driver can select Sport mode, whichoffers more active driving characteristics.
Activate or deactivate the function using this button inthe center display's Functionview.
GREEN button indicator light – the func- tion is activated.
GRAY button indicator light – the functionis deactivated.
When
ESC Sport Mode is acti-
vated, this symbol will illuminate with a steady glow in the instrumentpanel. It will remain on until the
driver deactivates the function or until theengine is turned off. The system will return tonormal mode the next time the engine isstarted.
The ESC Sport Mode function cannot be
selected when any of the following functions are activated:

) may be displayed in the instrument panel. Several examples are provided below.
Symbol Message Meaning
Steady glow for approx. 2 seconds. System check when the engine is started.
Flashing light. The system is actively operating.
Steady glow. Sport mode is activated.
NOTE! The system is not deactivated in this mode, but has partially
reduced functionality.
ESC Temporarily offThe system's functionality has been temporarily reduced due to high brake system temperatures. The function will be automatically reactivated when the brakes have cooled.
ESC Service requiredThe system is not functioning properly. Stop the vehicle in a safe place, turn off the engine and then restart it.
A text message can be erased by briefly press- ing the
button in the center of the right-
side steering wheel keypad. If the message persists: Contact a workshop
‒
an authorized Volvo workshop is recom- mended.

Curve Speed Assist (CSA) *48
Curve Speed Assist can help the driver
reduce speed before sharp turns if the preset speed for the driver support function Adap- tive Cruise Control * or Pilot Assist * is deter-
mined to be too high.
This assessment is performed using informa- tion from map data in the vehicle's navigation system, Sensus Navigation *. After the turn,
the vehicle will resume the previously set speed.
As the function reduces thevehicle's speed, this symbolwill be displayed in the instru-ment panel.
The driver can cancel the function at any time by braking or using the accelerator pedal.
WARNING
The function is supplementary driver support intended to facilitate drivingand help make it safer – it cannot han-dle all situations in all traffic, weatherand road conditions.
The driver is advised to read all sec-tions in the Owner's Manual about thisfunction to learn of its limitations,which the driver must be aware ofbefore using the function.
Driver support functions are not a sub-stitute for the driver's attention andjudgment. The driver is always respon-sible for ensuring the vehicle is drivenin a safe manner, at the appropriatespeed, with an appropriate distance toother vehicles, and in accordance withcurrent traffic rules and regulations.
Drive modes
Cornering assistance varies depending on the selected drive mode. If drive mode cannot be selected, the function will use the
Comfortoption. In Dynamic mode, cornering will be
sporty, with slightly more powerful accelera- tion coming out of curves.

436 This drive mode is adapted for optimal control when driving at low speeds on very poor roads or difficult terrain. It raises the chassis

reduces driveline throttle response, and locks the vehicle in all-wheel drive. The Hill DescentControl function facilitates controlled drivingon steep downgrades.
NOTE
This drive mode is not designed to be used for normal street driving.
NOTE
Due to the increased ground clearance, if the Off Road mode was selected when
the engine was switched off, the suspen- sion will lower when the engine is restar-ted.
CAUTION
Do not use the Off Road drive mode when
towing a trailer without an electrical con- nection. This could result in damage to thepneumatic suspension system's bellows.
Constant AWD
Improves the vehicle's traction and han- dling by increasing all-wheel drive. This drive mode locks the vehicle in all-wheeldrive. An adapted distribution between frontand rear axle torque provides effective control,stability and traction, e.g. on slippery roads orwhen towing a heavy trailer or another vehicle. The
Constant AWD drive mode is always
available regardless of the hybrid battery's charge status. Both the combustion engine and the electric motor are engaged to enable all-wheel drive,which results in higher fuel consumption. In the other drive modes, the vehicle automati- cally adapts the need for all-wheel driveaccording to the road surface, and can acti-vate the electric motor or start the combustionengine as needed.
Power
The vehicle gets sportier driving characte- ristics and a faster acceleration response.
This drive mode adapts the combined powerfrom the combustion engine and the electricmotor by providing power to both the frontand rear wheels. Gear shifting will be fasterand more distinct and the transmission willprioritize gears with a higher traction force.Steering response is faster, suspension is stiffer and ground clearance is lower 7

reduce body roll when cornering. Both the combustion engine and the electric motor are engaged to enable all-wheel drive,which results in higher fuel consumption. This drive mode is adapted for optimal per- formance and response during acceleration. Itchanges the throttle response, gear shiftingprogram and turbo boost system. Chassis set-tings and steering and brake response are also optimized. The
Power drive mode is always
available regardless of the hybrid battery's charge status.

Leveling control * and suspension
The vehicle's leveling control system adjusts the suspension and shock absorbers auto-matically to help optimize comfort and con-trol while driving. Leveling can also be con-trolled manually to facilitate loading or get-ting in and out of the vehicle.
Pneumatic suspension and shock absorbers
The system is adapted to the selected drive mode and vehicle speed. The pneumatic sus-pension reduces the vehicle's ground clear-ance at higher speeds to reduce air resistanceand increase stability. The shock absorbers arenormally set to help optimize comfort and areadjusted continuously according to the roadsurface and the vehicle's acceleration, brakingand cornering. The instrument panel indi-cates when the suspensionlevel is being adjusted.
The following apply if a door or the tailgate is opened:
If a door is opened, the level can only be adjusted upwards.
If the tailgate is open, the level can only beadjusted downwards.
ParkingWhen parking, make sure that there is ade-quate space above and below the vehiclesince ground clearance may vary depending on e.g. ambient temperature, how the vehicleis loaded, if loading mode is used, which drivemode is selected after the engine is started,etc. The level may also be adjusted a period after the vehicle is parked. This is to compensatefor any height changes that may occur due totemperature changes in the air springs whenthe vehicle cools.
TransportingWhen transporting the vehicle on a ferry, trainor truck, only secure (lash) the vehicle aroundthe tires, not using any other parts of the chas-sis. Changes in the pneumatic suspensionmay occur during transport, which couldadversely affect the lashing and result in dam-age.

Trailer Stability Assist *
Trailer Stability Assist (TSA 16
) is a function
designed to help stabilize a vehicle that is towing a trailer when the vehicle and trailerhave begun to sway. The function is part of the Electronic Stability Control system ESC 17
.
Reasons for swayingA vehicle towing a trailer may begin to sway for various reasons. Normally this only occursat high speeds. However, if the trailer is over-loaded or unevenly distributed, e.g. too farback, there is a risk of swaying even at lowspeeds. Swaying may be caused by factors such as:
The vehicle and trailer are hit by a sudden, strong crosswind.
The vehicle and trailer are traveling on anuneven road or over a bump.
Sudden movements of the steering wheel.
Once swaying has begun, it can be difficult orimpossible to stop it. This makes the vehicleand trailer difficult to control and there is a riskof swerving into oncoming traffic or driving offthe road.
Trailer Stability Assist functionTrailer Stability Assist continuously monitorsthe vehicle's movements, particularly lateral movements. If swaying is detected, the brakesare applied individually on the front wheels,which has a stabilizing effect on the vehicleand trailer. This is often enough to enable thedriver to regain control of the vehicle. If the Trailer Stability Assist function's first attempt is not adequate to stop the swayingmotion, the brakes are applied on all wheelsand engine power is temporarily reduced. Asthe swaying motion begins to decrease andthe vehicle and trailer have once againbecome stable, TSA stops regulating thebrakes/engine power and the driver regainscontrol of the vehicle.
NOTE
Trailer Stability Assist is deactivated if the driver selects the sport mode by deactivat- ing
ESC in the center display's menu sys-
tem.
Trailer Stability Assist may not intervene if the driver tries to compensate for the swayingmotion by moving the steering wheel rapidly,because the system will then not be able todetermine if it is the trailer or the driver caus-ing the swaying. When Trailer Stability Assistis activated, the ESC symbolis displayed in the instrumentpanel.

Towing using a towline
This section refers to one vehicle being towed behind another using a towline.
Never attempt to tow a Twin Engine vehicle behind another vehicle as this could damagethe electric motor. The vehicle must instead belifted onto a tow truck and transported with allfour wheels on the bed or lifting platform ofthe truck (no wheels may touch the road).
Towing another vehicleTowing another vehicle requires a lot of power - use the Constant AWD drive mode. This
helps charge the hybrid battery and improve the vehicle's driving and roadholding characte-ristics. Before towing another vehicle, check applica- ble speed limit regulations.
Jump startingNever attempt to tow the vehicle to start theengine, as this could damage the electricmotor. Use an auxiliary battery if the start bat-tery's charge level is so low that the enginecannot be started.
CAUTION
Attempts to tow-start the vehicle could cause damage to the electrical drive motorand three-way catalytic converter.

Attaching and removing the towing eyelet
Use the towing eyelet to tow another vehicle. Screw the towing eyelet securely into placein the threaded outlet behind the cover on theright-hand side of the rear bumper.
NOTE
If the vehicle is equipped with a towbar, there is no rear attachment for the towingeye.
Attaching the towing eyelet
Take out the towing eyelet, which is stored in a foam block under the floor inthe cargo compartment.
