Front and rear brakes
Brake lever and brake pedal
8Check that there is no free play in the brake
lever. If there is free play, have a Yamaha
dealer inspect the brake system.
8Check for correct brake pedal height. (See
page 8-63.) If the pedal height is incorrect,
have a Yamaha dealer adjust it.
8Check the operation of the brake lever and
brake pedal. They should move smoothly
and there should be a firm feeling when the
brakes are applied. If not, have a Yamaha
dealer inspect the brake system.
Brake fluid level
Check the brake fluid level. Add fluid if neces-
sary. (See pages 8-55–8-57.)
Recommended brake fluid: DOT 4

Brake fluid leakage
Check to see if any brake fluid is leaking out of
the pipe joints or brake fluid reservoirs. Apply
the brakes firmly for one minute. If there is any
leakage, have a Yamaha dealer inspect the
brake system.
Brake operation
Test the brakes at slow speed after starting out
to make sure they are working properly. If the
brakes do not provide proper braking perfor-
mance, inspect the brake pads for wear. (See
page 8-59.)
w
Always check the brakes at the start of every
ride. Do not ride the ATV if you find any prob-
lem with the brakes or you could lose braking
ability, which could lead to an accident. If a
problem cannot be corrected by the adjust-
ment procedures provided in this manual,
have a Yamaha dealer check for the cause.

PERIODIC MAINTENANCE/LUBRICATION
NOTE:8For vehicles not equipped with an odometer or an hour meter, follow the month maintenance intervals.
8For vehicles equipped with an odometer or an hour meter, follow the km (mi) or hours maintenance intervals. However, keep in mind that if
the vehicle isn’t used for a long period of time, the month maintenance intervals should be followed.

NOTE:
8Recommended brake fluid: DOT 4
8Brake fluid replacement:
9When disassembling the master cylinders or caliper cylinders, replace the brake fluid.
Normally check the brake fluid level and add fluid as required.
9On the inner parts of the master cylinders and caliper cylinders, replace the oil seals every
two years.
9Replace the brake hoses every four years, or if cracked or damaged.

Brake fluid level check
Insufficient brake fluid may let air enter the
brake system, possibly causing the brakes to
become ineffective.
Before riding, check that the brake fluid is above
the minimum level mark and replenish if neces-
sary. A low brake fluid level may indicate worn
brake pads and/or brake system leakage. If the
brake fluid level is low, be sure to check the
brake pads for wear and the brake system for
leakage.
Observe these precautions:
8When checking the brake fluid level, make
sure the top of the brake fluid reservoir is
level.
8Use only the designated quality brake fluid,
otherwise, the rubber seals may deteriorate,
causing leakage and poor brake perfor-
mance.
8-55
5VM-9-62-05 3/12/04 4:15 PM Page 56
8Refill with the same type of brake fluid.
Mixing fluids may result in a harmful chemi-
cal reaction and lead to poor brake perfor-
mance.
8Be careful that water does not enter the
brake fluid reservoir when refilling. Water
will significantly lower the boiling point of the
fluid and may result in vapor lock.
8Brake fluid may deteriorate painted surfaces
or plastic parts. Always clean up spilled fluid
immediately.
8Have a Yamaha dealer check the cause if
the brake fluid level goes down.
EBU01186
Brake fluid replacement
Complete fluid replacement should be done only
by trained Yamaha service personnel. Have a
Yamaha dealer replace the following compo-
nents during periodic maintenance or when they
are damaged or leaking.
8Replace the oil seals every two years.
8Replace the brake hoses every four years.
