Si destan d
The sidestand is located on the left
side of the frame. Raise the sidestand
or lower it with your foot while holding
the vehicle upright.
TIP
The built-in sidestand switch is
part of the ignition circuit cut-off
system, which cuts the ignition in
certain situations. (See the follow-
ing section for an explanation of
the ignition circuit cut-off system.)
 The sidestand switch is also part
of the YCC-S system. Shifting out
of neutral is impossible when the
sidestand is down.

Ig nition circuit cut-off system
The ignition circuit cut-off system
(comprising the sidestand switch and
brake light switches) has the following
functions.
 It prevents starting when the side-
stand is up, but neither brake is applied.
 It prevents starting when either
brake is applied, but the sidestand
is still down.
 It cuts the running engine when
the sidestand is moved down.
Periodically check the operation of the
ignition circuit cut-off system accord-
ing to the following procedure.

With the engine turned off:
1. Place the vehicle on the centerstand.
2.
Move the sidestand down.
3. Make sure that the start/engine stop switch is set to “ ”.
4. Turn the key to “ON”.
5. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
6. Keep the front or rear brake applied.
7.
Push the “ ” side of the start/engine
stop switch.
Does the engine start?
With the engine still running:
8. Move the sidestand up.
9. Shift the transmission into gear.
10. Move the sidestand down.
Does the engine stall?
After the engine has stalled:
11. Move the sidestand up.
12. Release the brake.

Push the “ ” side of the
start/engine stop switch.
Does the engine start?
The system is OK. The motorcycle can
be ridden.
The neutral switch, a brake light switch
or the YCC-S system may not be
working correctly.
The motorcycle should not be ridden
until checked by a Yamaha dealer.
The sidestand switch may not be
working correctly.
The motorcycle should not be ridden
until checked by a Yamaha dealer.
A brake light switch may not be working
correctly.
The motorcycle should not be ridden
until checked by a Yamaha dealer.
WARNING
The vehicle must be placed on the centerstand during this inspection.
If a malfunction is noted, have a Yamaha dealer check the system
before riding.
TIP
The traction control system
indicator/warning light “TCS” may come
on, but this is not a malfunction.

Auxiliary DC jack
WARNING

To prevent electrical shock or short-

installe d when the auxiliary DC jack
is not b eing use d.

auxiliary DC jack shoul d not b e used
with the en gine turne d off, an d the
loa d must never exceed 30 W (2.5 A),
otherwise the fuse may blow or the
b attery may d ischarge.
This vehicle is equipped with an auxil-
iary DC jack in the accessory box.
A 12-V accessory connected to the
auxiliary jack can be used when the
key is in the “ON” position and should
only be used when the engine is run-
ning.
To use the auxiliary DC jack
1. Open the accessory box lid. (See page 3-39.)
2. Turn the key to “OFF”.
3. Remove the auxiliary DC jack cap.
4. Turn the accessory off. 5. Insert the accessory plug into the
auxiliary DC jack.
6. Turn the key to “ON”, and then start the engine. (See page 5-2.)
7. Turn the accessory on.

Cornering lig hts
This model is equipped with 3 corner-
ing lights on each side. The cornering
lights come on to help illuminate the
road when the vehicle is leaned over.
According to the direction of the turn,
the cornering lights for that side come
on. The lights come on in sequence
from the inside outward depending on
the lean angle of the vehicle.
TIP
When the vehicle is first powered on,
the cornering lights will perform a self-
check, coming on in sequence from
the inside outward, and then returning
inward.

engine stops automatically if left
idling for 20 minutes. In this case,
simply push the start switch to re-

Always apply the front or rear brake
while the main switch is in the “ON”
position an d the transmission is in
g ear. Otherwise, the vehicle may
su ddenly start to move when the en-
g ine is starte d, causin g loss of con-

In order for the ignition circuit cut-off
system to enable starting, one of the
following conditions must be met:
 The front or rear brake is applied
with the transmission in the neu-
tral position whether the sidestand
is up or down.
 The front or rear brake is applied
with the transmission in gear and
the sidestand is up.
See page 3-48 for more informa-
tion.
1. Turn the key to “ON” and make sure that the start/engine stop
switch is set to “ ”.

If the stop mode function was activat-
ed when the key was turned to “OFF”
then the stop mode function is still ac-
tivated and the indicator light will re-
main on.

The ABS warning light should
come on when the key is turned to
“ON”, and then go off after travel-
ing at a speed of 10 km/h (6 mi/h)
or higher.

2. Shift the transmission into the
neutral position. The neutral indi-
cator light should come on. If not,
ask a Yamaha dealer to check the
electrical circuit.
3. Start the engine by pushing the “ ” side of the start/engine
stop switch with the front or rear
brake applied.
If the engine fails to start, release
the start/engine stop switch, wait
a few seconds, and then try again.

as short as possible to preserve

Shiftin g
Shifting gears lets you control the
amount of engine power available for
starting off, accelerating, climbing hills,
etc.
The gears can be shifted using either
the shift pedal or the hand shift lever.
Refer to page 3-26 for an explanation
of the YCC-S system, to page 3-26 for
the shift pedal operation, and to page
3-27 for the hand shift lever operation.
The gear positions are shown in the il-
lustration.
