anti-friction modifiers. Passenger car motor
oils (often labeled “ENERGY CONSERVING II”)
contain anti-friction additives which will cause
clutch and/or starter clutch slippage, resulting
in reduced component life and poor engine
performance. _

Engine oil and oil filter cartridge replacement
1. Remove panels E and F. (See pages 8-27 ~
8-29 for panel removal and installation pro-
cedures.)
2. Warm up the engine for several minutes.
3. Stop the engine. Place an oil pan under the
engine and remove the dipstick.
4. Remove the drain bolt and drain the oil.

5. Remove the oil filter by using an oil filter
wrench.NOTE:_ An oil filter wrench is available at a nearby
Yamaha dealer. _6. Install the drain bolt and tighten it to the spec-
ified torque.

7. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring of
the new oil filter.NOTE:_ Make sure the O-ring is seated properly. _8. Install the oil filter and tighten it to the speci-
fied torque with a torque wrench.

9. Fill the engine with sufficient oil to reach the
specified level. Install the dipstick and tighten
it.CAUTION:_
Do not put in any chemical additives. En-
gine oil also lubricates the clutch and addi-
tives could cause clutch slippage.
Be sure no foreign material enters the
crankcase.

3. Remove the air filter element, and separate it
from the guide.
4. Wash the element gently but thoroughly in
solvent.
WARNING
Always use parts cleaning solvent to clean the
air filter element. Never use low flash point sol-
vents or gasoline to clean the air filter element
because the engine could catch fire or ex-
plode.5. Squeeze the excess solvent out of the filter
and let it dry.CAUTION:
Do not twist the filter element when squeezing
it.6. Inspect the element. If damaged, replace it.
7. Apply SAE 10W30 motor oil to the element.NOTE:The element should be wet but not dripping.
