NOTICEAfter driving your vehicle in water, be sure
to drain the trapped water by removing the
check hoses at the bottom of the air filter
case and air duct and the V-belt case drain
plug. Wash the vehicle in fresh water if it
has been operated in salt water or muddy
conditions.
Loose terrain/slippery terrain
When driving on slippery terrain, including
wet, muddy, or icy conditions, as well as loose
gravel, be aware that you could begin skid-
ding or sliding. To avoid loss of control, slow
down and put the vehicle in four-wheel drive
before driving on a slippery surface and plan
your path to avoid making abrupt maneuvers.
If you feel the vehicle begin to slide sideways
or the back wheels slide during a turn, steer
into the direction of the slide if possible, to re-
gain directional control. For example, if you
feel the back of the vehicle start to slide to
your right, steer to the right.

5B410016Cleaning the air filter elementThe air filter element should be cleaned every
20–40 hours. It should be cleaned and lubri-
cated more often if the vehicle is operated in
extremely dusty areas. Each time air filter ele-
ment maintenance is performed, check the air
inlet to the air filter case for obstructions.
Check the air filter element rubber joint to the
throttle body and manifold fittings for an air-
tight seal. Tighten all fittings securely to avoid
the possibility of unfiltered air entering the en-
gine.NOTICENever operate the engine with the air filter
element removed. This will allow unfiltered
air to enter, causing rapid engine wear and
possible engine damage. Additionally, op-
eration without the air filter element will af-
fect the fuel injection system with
subsequent poor performance and possi-
ble engine overheating.
1. Remove the center passenger seat cush-
ion. (See page 4-18 for seat cushion re-
moval and installation procedures.)

6. Wash the sponge material gently but thoroughly in parts cleaning solvent.
WARNING! Using gasoline or other
flammable solvents to clean the air fil-
ter element can cause a fire or explo-
sion, which could lead to serious
injury.
7. Squeeze the excess solvent out of the sponge material. NOTICE: Do not twist
the sponge material when squeezing
it.

8. Wash the sponge material in warm soapy water to remove remaining solvent, then
rinse thoroughly with plain warm water.
9. Squeeze excess water out of the sponge material. NOTICE: Do not twist the
sponge material when squeezing it.
10. Allow the sponge material to dry thor- oughly. Inspect the sponge material and
replace it if damaged.
11. Thoroughly apply Yamaha foam air filter oil or other quality liquid foam air filter oil
(not spray type) to the sponge material.
The sponge material should be wet but
not dripping.
12. Pull the sponge material over its frame.
13. Install the air filter element holder.
14. Install the air filter element. 15. Fit the holders on the air filter case cover
onto the projections on the air filter case,
and then install the air filter case cover by
hooking the holders onto the cover.

Cleaning the air filter case/duct check
hoseThere is a check hose at the bottom of the air
filter case under the cargo bed and a check
hose at the bottom of the air duct. The air duct
check hose can be accessed under the vehi-
cle. If dust or water collects in a check hose,
empty the hose and clean the air filter element
