FOR YOUR SAFETY – PRE-OPERATION CHECKS
EBU31580Inspect your vehicle each time you use it to make sure the vehicle is in safe operating condition.
Always follow the inspection and maintenance procedures and schedules described in the Own-
er’s Manual.
WARNING
EWB00482Failure to inspect or maintain the vehicle properly increases the possibility of an accident
or equipment damage. Do not operate the vehicle if you find any problem. If a problem can-
not be corrected by the procedures provided in this manual, have the vehicle inspected by
a Yamaha dealer. Before using this vehicle, check the following points:

Portable fuel containers
If you carry a portable fuel container in the
bed of your Yamaha Viking, be sure to secure
it with the cap tightened before driving the ve-
hicle.
Always place a portable fuel container on the
ground before filling it. Before removing the
container cap, touch the container with the
fuel dispenser nozzle. Keep fuel dispenser
nozzle in contact with container inlet when fill-
ing. WARNING! Never refill a fuel container
in the bed of any vehicle. Fire may result
from a build-up of static electricity. The discharge of this build-up while refueling
can cause a spark and ignite the gasoline.

EBU31750Engine oilMake sure the engine oil is at the specified
level. Add oil as necessary. (See page 8-11.)NOTICEECB00301
In order to prevent clutch slippage (since
the engine oil also lubricates the clutch),
do not mix any chemical additives. Do
not use oils with a diesel specification of
“CD” or oils of a higher quality than
specified. In addition, do not use oils la-
beled “ENERGY CONSERVING II” or
higher.
Make sure that no foreign material en-
ters the crankcase.
Recommended fuel:
Regular unleaded gasoline only
For Europe: Regular unleaded gasoline only
with a research octane number of 95 or
higher
Fuel tank capacity: 36.7 L (9.69 US gal, 8.07 Imp.gal)
Recommended engine oil type and quantity:See page 10-1.

EBU31760CoolantCheck the coolant level in the coolant reser-
voir when the engine is cold (the coolant level
will vary with engine temperature).
The coolant level is satisfactory if it is be-
tween the minimum and maximum level
marks on the coolant reservoir. If the coolant
level is at or below the minimum level mark,
add additional coolant to bring the level up to
maximum level mark. If coolant is not avail-
able, add distilled water. Change the coolant
every two years. (See page 8-20.)NOTICEECB02120Hard water or salt water is harmful to the
engine. You may use soft water if you can-
not get distilled water.
EBU31770Final gear oilMake sure the final gear oil is at the specified
level. Add oil as necessary. (See page 8-16
for details.)
If desired, an SAE 80W-90 hypoid gear oil
may be used for all conditions.TIPGL-4 is a quality and additive rating; GL-5 or
GL-6 rated hypoid gear oils may also be used. EBU31780Differential gear oilMake sure the differential gear oil is at the
specified level. Add oil as necessary. (See
page 8-18 for details.)
Coolant reservoir capacity (up to the maxi-
mum level mark):0.28 L (0.30 US qt, 0.25 Imp.qt)
Recommended oil:SAE 80 API GL-4 Hypoid gear oil

EBU33020Engine oil and oil filter cartridgeCheck engine oil level before each operation.
In addition, change the oi l and the oil filter car-
tridge at the intervals specified in the periodic
maintenance and lubrication chart.
To check the engine oil level
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Check the engine oil level on a cold en- gine.TIPIf the engine was started before checking the
oil level, be sure to warm up the engine suffi-
ciently, and then wait at least 10 minutes until
the oil settles for an accurate reading. 3. Lift the cargo bed up. (See page 4-22 forcargo bed lifting and lowering proce-
dures.)
4. Remove the engine oil dipstick, and then
wipe it off with a clean rag.

5. Insert the dipstick completely into the oilfiller hole, and then remove it again to
check the oil level.TIPThe engine oil should be between the mini-
mum and maximum level marks.
6. If the engine oil is at or below the mini-mum level mark, remove the right rear
panel by removing the quick fastener
screws and bolts, and then add sufficient
oil of the recommended type to raise it to

12. Start the engine, and then let it idle for
several minutes while checking it for oil
leakage. If oil is leaking, immediately turn
the engine off and check for the cause.
13. Turn the engine off, wait at least 10 min-
utes, and then check the oil level and cor-
rect it if necessary.
14. Install the right rear panel by installing the
