Front and rear brakes
1. Brake lever and brake pedal
Check for correct free play in the front
brake lever. If the free play is incorrect, ad-
just it. Check for correct rear brake pedal
height. If the pedal height is incorrect,
have a Yamaha dealer adjust it. (See
pages 8-47 ~ 8-49.)
Check the operation of the lever and ped-
al. They should move smoothly and there
should be a firm feeling when the brakes
are applied. If not, have the machine in-
spected by a Yamaha dealer.
2. Brake fluid level
Check the brake fluid level.
Add fluid if necessary. (See pages 8-41 ~
8-45.)
NOTE:
If DOT 4 is not available, DOT 3 can be used.Recommended brake fluid: DOT 4

3. Brake fluid leakage
Check to see if any brake fluid is leaking
out of the pipe joints or master cylinders.
Apply the brakes firmly for one minute. If
there is any leaking, have the machine in-
spected by a Yamaha dealer.
4. Brake operation
Test the brakes at slow speed after start-
ing out to make sure they are working
properly. If the brakes do not provide
proper braking performance, inspect the
brake pads for wear. (See page 8-39.)
WARNING
Always check the brakes at the start of every
ride. Do not ride the ATV if you find any prob-
lem with the brakes or you could lose braking
ability, which could lead to an accident. If a
problem cannot be corrected by the adjust-
ment procedures provided in this manual,
have the ATV inspected by a Yamaha dealer.

Inspecting the brake fluid level
Insufficient brake fluid may let air enter the
brake system, possibly causing the brakes to
become ineffective.
Before riding, check that the brake fluid is
above the lower level and replenish when nec-
essary.
Observe these precautions:
1. When checking the fluid level, make sure
the top of the master cylinder is level by
turning the handlebars.
2. Use only the designated quality brake flu-
id. Otherwise, the rubber seals may dete-
riorate, causing leakage and poor brake
performance.NOTE:If DOT 4 is not available, DOT 3 can be used.Recommended brake fluid: DOT 4

3. Refill with the same type of brake fluid.
Mixing fluids may result in a harmful
chemical reaction and lead to poor brake
performance.
4. Be careful that water does not enter the
master cylinder when refilling. Water will
significantly lower the boiling point of the
fluid and may result in vapor lock.
5. Brake fluid may deteriorate painted sur-
faces or plastic parts. Always clean up
spilled fluid immediately.
6. Have a Yamaha dealer check the cause if
the brake fluid level goes down.

Brake fluid replacement
1. Complete fluid replacement should be
done only by trained Yamaha service per-
sonnel.
2. Have a Yamaha dealer replace the follow-
ing components during periodic mainte-
nance or when they are damaged or
leaking.
a. Replace all rubber seals every two years.
b. Replace all hoses every four years.
