NOTICEECB00942Always keep the battery charged. Stor-
ing the battery in a discharged state for
an extended period of time will cause
permanent battery damage.
 Do not store the battery in an excessive-
ly cold or warm place [below freezing or
above 30 °C (90 °F)]. To install the batteryTIPBe sure the battery is fully charged. 1. Place the battery in its compartment.
2. Hook the battery bands.
3. Connect the positive battery lead by in-
stalling its bolt and cover, then connect
the negative battery lead. NOTICE:
When installing the battery, the main
switch must be off, and the positive
lead must be connected before the
negative lead.

4. Install the air intake duct panel by install- ing the quick fastener screws.
5. Install the hood.TIP Make sure the battery leads are installed as
shown.

EBU32651Jump-startingJump-starting the vehicle should be avoided.
The battery should be removed and charged
instead.
However, if the vehicle must be jump-started,
proceed as follows.
WARNING
EWB03430To avoid battery explosion and/or serious
damage to the electrical system:
Do not connect the negative lead of the
jumper cable to the negative terminal of
the battery.
 Do not touch the positive lead of the
jumper cable to the negative lead.
 Do not reverse the polarity of the jumper
cables when connecting to the batteries. 1. Turn the key to “ ” (off).
2. Remove the hood. (See page 8-10.)
3. Using a charged 12-volt battery, connect
the positive lead of the jumper cable to
the positive terminal of the battery in the vehicle and the other end of the positive
lead to the positive terminal of the
charged battery.
4. Connect the negative lead of the jumper cable to the negative terminal of the
charged battery and the other end of the
negative lead to an unpainted metal sur-
face of the frame of the vehicle to be
started.

5. Start the engine. (See page 6-2.)
6. After the engine starts, disconnect thenegative lead of the jumper cable from
the frame and charged battery, and then
disconnect the positive lead of the jump-
er cable from the charged battery and the
battery in the vehicle.
7. Install the hood.

Remove the spark plug wire and ground
it. Operate the electric starter to turn the
engine over several times and coat the
cylinder walls with oil.
3. Lubricate all control cables.
4. Put the frame on stands or blocks to raise
all wheels off the ground.
5. Tie a plastic bag over the exhaust pipe
outlet to prevent moisture from entering.
6. If storing in a humid or salt-air atmo- sphere, coat all exposed metal surfaces
with a light film of oil. Do not apply oil to
any rubber parts or the seat covers.
7. Remove the battery and charge it. Store
it in a dry place and recharge it once a
month. Do not store the battery in an ex-
cessively warm or cold place [less than 0
°C (30 °F) or more than 30 °C (90 °F)].
Use of fuel stabilizer eliminates the need to
drain the fuel system. Consult a Yamaha
dealer if the fuel system needs to be drained.
