Check that the fuel cock (if
equipped) is in the off position and
that there are no fuel leaks.
Shift the transmission into gear (for
models with a manual transmis-
sion).
Secure the motorcycle with
tie-downs or suitable straps that
are attached to solid parts of the
motorcycle, such as the frame or
upper front fork triple clamp (and
not, for example, to rubber-mount-
ed handlebars or turn signals, or
parts that could break). Choose
the location for the straps carefully
so the straps will not rub against
painted surfaces during transport.
The suspension should be com-
pressed somewhat by the
tie-downs, if possible, so that the
motorcycle will not bounce exces-
sively during transport.

will perform a circuit check (come on for
a few seconds and then go off).
If the warning light remains on after
confirming that the oil level is correct
(page 6-10), have a Yamaha dealer
check the vehicle.TIP
Even if the oil level is sufficient, the
warning light may flicker when rid-
ing up or downhill, or during sud-
den acceleration or deceleration,
but this is not a malfunction.
If a malfunction is detected, the oil
level warning light will flash repeat-
edly. Have a Yamaha dealercheck the vehicle.

gine overheats. If this occurs, stop the
engine immediately and allow the en-
gine to cool.
The electrical circuit of the warning light
can be checked by turning the key to
“ON”. The warning light should come
on for a few seconds, and then go off.
If the warning light does not come on
initially when the key is turned to “ON”,
or if the warning light remains on, have

If the indicator light does not come on
initially when the key is turned to “ON”,
if the indicator light remains on, or if the
indicator light flashes in a pattern (if a
problem is detected in the immobilizer
system, the immobili
zer system indica-
tor light will flash in a pattern), have a
Yamaha dealer check the vehicle.
TIPIf the immobilizer system indicator light
flashes in the pattern, slowly 5 times
then quickly 2 times, this could be
caused by transponder interference. Ifthis occurs, try the following.
1. Make sure there are no other im- mobilizer keys close to the main
switch. Other immobilizer system
keys may cause signal interfer-
ence and prevent the engine from
starting.
2. Use the code re-registering key to start the engine.
3. If the engine starts, turn it off, and try starting the engine with the
standard keys.
4. If one or both of the standard keys do not start the engine, take the
vehicle and all 3 keys to a Yamaha
dealer to have the standard keys
re-registered.

Fuel meter
The fuel meter indicates the amount of
fuel in the fuel tank. The display seg-
ments of the fuel meter disappear from
“F” (full tank) towards “E” (empty tank)
as the fuel level decreases. When the
last segment and frame start flashing,
refuel as soon as possible.
TIPThis fuel meter is equipped with a
self-diagnosis system. If a problem is
detected in the fuel tank electrical cir-
cuit, the fuel level segments, frame,
and “ ” will flash repeatedly. If this oc-
curs, have a Yamaha dealer check the
vehicle.
Eco indicator
This indicator comes on when the vehi-
cle is being operated in an environmen-
tally friendly, fuel-efficient manner. The
indicator goes off when the vehicle is
stopped.TIPConsider the following tips to reduce
fuel consumption:
Avoid high engine speeds during
acceleration.
Travel at a constant speed.
Select the transmission gear that
is appropriate for the vehicle
speed.

Ignition circuit cut-off systemThis system prevents in-gear engine
starts unless the clutch lever is pulled
and the sidestand is up. Also, it will stop
the running engine should the sides-
tand be lowered while the transmission
is in gear.
Periodically check the system via the
following procedure.TIP
This check is most reliable if per-
formed with a warmed-up engine.
See pages 3-2 and 3-14 for switchoperation information.

TIPThis model is equipped with:
a lean angle sensor to stop the en-
gine in case of a turnover. In this
case, the engine trouble warning
light will come on, but this is not a
malfunction. Turn the key to “OFF”
and then to “ON” to turn off the
warning light. Failing to do so will
prevent the engine from starting
even though the engine will crank
when pushing the start switch.
an engine auto-stop system. The
engine stops automatically if left
idling for 20 minutes. If the engine
stops, simply push the start switchto restart the engine.
EAU73430
Starting the engineIn order for the ignition circuit cut-off
system to enable starting, one of the
following conditions must be met:
The transmission is in the neutral
position.
The transmission is in gear with
the clutch lever pulled and the sid-
estand up.
See page 3-28 for more informa-
tion.

plained above, see page 3-4 for thewarning light circuit check.2. Shift the transmission into the neu- tral position. The neutral indicator
light should come on. If not, ask a
Yamaha dealer to check the elec-
trical circuit.
3. Start the engine by sliding the switch toward “ ”.
If the engine fails to start, release
the start/engine stop switch, wait a
few seconds, and then try again.
Each starting attempt should be as
short as possible to preserve the
battery. Do not crank the engine more than 10 seconds on any one
attempt.

NOTICE
ECA10261
Even with the transmission in
the neutral position, do not
coast for long periods of time
with the engine off, and do not
tow the motorcycle for long dis-
tances. The transmission is
properly lubricated only when
the engine is running. Inade-
quate lubrication may damage
the transmission.
Always use the clutch while
changing gears to avoid damag-
ing the engine, transmission,
and drive train, which are not
designed to withstand theshock of forced shifting.
EAU16811
Tips for reducing fuel
consumptionFuel consumption depends largely on
your riding style. Consider the following
tips to reduce fuel consumption:
Shift up swiftly, and avoid high en-
gine speeds during acceleration.
Do not rev the engine while shifting
down, and avoid high engine
speeds with no load on the engine.
Turn the engine off instead of let-
ting it idle for an extended length of
time (e.g., in traffic jams, at traffic
lights or at railroad crossings).
EAU16842
Engine break-inThere is never a more important period
in the life of your engine than the period
between 0 and 1600 km (1000 mi). For
this reason, you should read the follow-
ing material carefully.
Since the engine is brand new, do not
put an excessive load on it for the first
1600 km (1000 mi). The various parts in
the engine wear and polish themselves
to the correct operating clearances.
During this period, prolonged full-throt-
tle operation or any condition that might
result in engine overheating must be
avoided.
EAU17094
0–1000 km (0–600 mi)
Avoid prolonged operation above 5600
r/min. NOTICE: After 1000 km (600
mi) of operation, the engine oil must
be changed and the oil filter car-
tridge or element replaced.
[ECA10303]
1000–1600 km (600–1000 mi)
Avoid prolonged operation above 6800

Changing the brake fluidHave a Yamaha dealer change the
brake fluid every 2 years. In addition,
have the seals of the master cylinders
and brake calipers, as well as the brake
hoses replaced at the intervals listed
below or sooner if they are damaged or
leaking.
Brake seals: every 2 years
Brake hoses: every 4 years
EAU22762
Drive chain slackThe drive chain slack should be
checked before each ride and adjusted
if necessary.
EAU2277G
To check the drive chain slack 1. Place the motorcycle on the sides- tand.TIPWhen checking and adjusting the drive
chain slack, there should be no weighton the motorcycle.
2. Shift the transmission into the neu- tral position.
3. Measure the drive chain slack as shown. 4. If the drive chain slack is incorrect,
adjust it as follows. NOTICE: Im-
proper drive chain slack will
overload the engine as well as
other vital parts of the motorcy-
cle and can lead to chain slip-
page or breakage. If the drive
chain slack is more than 25.0
mm (0.98 in), the chain can dam-
age the frame, swingarm, and
other parts. To prevent this from
occurring, keep the drive chain
slack within the specified lim-
its.
