PRE-OPERATION CHECKS
EBU19226Inspect your vehicle each time you use it to make sure the vehicle is in safe operating condition. Always
follow the inspection and maintenance procedures and schedules described in the Owner’s Manual.
WARNING
EWB00482Failure to inspect or maintain the vehicle properly increases the possibility of an accident or equip-
ment damage. Do not operate the vehicle if you find any problem. If a problem cannot be corrected
by the procedures provided in this manual, have the vehicle inspected by a Yamaha dealer. Before using this vehicle, check the following points:

ture. EBU19713Front and rear brakesBrake lever and brake pedal
Check that there is no free play in the brake le-
ver. If there is free play, have a Yamaha dealer
check the brake system. 
Check for correct brake pedal height. (See page
8-35.) If the pedal height is incorrect, have a
Yamaha dealer adjust it.
 Check the operation of the lever and pedal.
They should move smoothly and there should
be a firm feeling when the brakes are applied. If
not, have a Yamaha dealer check the brake sys-
tem.
Brake fluid level
Check the brake fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.
(See page 8-31.)
Brake fluid leakage
Check to see if any brake fluid is leaking out of the
pipe joints or brake fluid reservoirs. Apply the
brakes firmly for one minute. If there is any leak-
age, have a Yamaha dealer check the brake sys-

EBU2678AEngine oil and oil filter elementThe engine oil level should be checked before
each ride. In addition, the oil must be changed and
the oil filter element replaced at the intervals spec-
ified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication
chart.
To check the engine oil level1. Place the ATV on a level surface.
2. Start the engine, warm it up until the engine oil has reached a normal temperature of 60
°C (140 °F), let it continue to idle for ten sec-
onds or more, and then turn the engine off.TIPTo achieve the proper engine oil temperature for
an accurate oil level reading, the engine must have
first completely cooled down, and then warmed
up again for several minutes to normal operating
temperature. 3. Remove the engine oil tank filler cap, andthen wipe the engine oil dipstick off with a
clean rag.
4. Insert the dipstick in the filler hole (without screwing it in), and then remove it again to
check the oil level.
TIPThe engine oil should be between the minimum
and maximum level marks. 5. If the engine oil is at or below the minimumlevel mark, add sufficient oil of the recom-
mended type through the engine oil tank filler
hole to raise it to the correct level. NOTICE:1. Engine oil tank

el, otherwise engine damage may result.

TIPWhen adding oil, be careful not to overfill the en-
gine oil tank; the oil level rises faster starting from
the half-level-portion on the dipstick. 6. Check the O-ring for damage, and replace it
if necessary.
7. Insert the dipstick into the engine oil tank filler hole, and then tighten the engine oil tank filler
cap. NOTICE: Make sure that the engine oil
tank filler cap is securely tightened; other-
wise, oil may seep out when the engine is
running.

To change the engine oil (with or without oil fil-
ter element replacement) 1. Place the ATV on a level surface.
2. Start the engine, warm it up for several minu- tes, and then turn it off.
3. Place an oil pan under the engine to collect the used oil. 4. Remove the crankcase engine oil filler bolt
and its O-ring, and then remove the crank-
case engine oil drain bolt and its gasket.

5. Remove the engine oil tank filler cap, and
then remove the engine oil tank drain bolt and
its gasket.
TIPSkip steps 6–9 if the oil filter element is not being
replaced. 6. Remove the oil filter element cover by remov-ing the bolts.

10. Install the crankcase engine oil drain bolt, the
engine oil tank drain bolt and their new gas-
ket, and then tighten the bolts to the specified
torques.
11. Install the crankcase engine oil filler bolt and its new O-ring, and then tighten the oil filler
bolt to the specified torque.
12. Pour only 1.3 L (1.37 US qt, 1.14 Imp.qt) of the specified amount of the recommended
engine oil through the engine oil tank filler
hole, and then install and tighten the oil tank
filler cap.
13. Start the engine, rev it several times, and then turn it off. 14. Remove the engine oil tank filler cap, and
then gradually fill the oil tank with the remain-
ing oil quantity while regularly checking the oil
level on the dipstick.
15. Check the O-ring for damage, and replace it if necessary.
16. Install and tighten the engine oil tank filler cap.
TIPBe sure to wipe off spilled oil on any parts after the
engine and exhaust system have cooled down. NOTICEECB00301In order to prevent clutch slippage (since the
engine oil also lubricates the clutch), do not
mix any chemical additives. Do not use oils

Crankcase engine oil drain bolt:23 N·m (2.3 kgf·m, 17 lb·ft)
Engine oil tank drain bolt: 19 N·m (1.9 kgf·m, 14 lb·ft)
Tightening torque: Crankcase engine oil filler bolt:12 N·m (1.2 kgf·m, 8.9 lb·ft)Recommended oil: See page 10-1.
Oil quantity: Without oil filter element replacement:1.75 L (1.85 US qt, 1.54 Imp.qt)
With oil filter element replacement: 1.85 L (1.96 US qt, 1.63 Imp.qt)
