There are two significant reasons for knowing
the serial number of your machine:
1. When ordering parts, you can give the num-
ber to your Yamaha dealer for positive iden-
tification of the model you own.
2. If your machine is stolen, the authorities will
need the number to search for and identify
your machine.

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
(For USA, CDN, AUS, NZ and E)
The vehicle identification number 1is stamped
on the right of the steering head pipe.

FRAME SERIAL NUMBER
(For F, D, GB, I and ZA)
The frame serial number 1is stamped on the
right of the steering head pipe.

ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER
The engine serial number 1is stamped into the
elevated part of the right-side of the engine.

MODEL LABEL
The model label 1is affixed to the frame under
the rider’s seat. This information will be needed
to order spare parts.

Before riding for break-in operation, practice or a race, make sure the machine is in good operating
condition.
Before using this machine, check the following points.

1. Elevate the front wheel by placing a suitable
stand under the engine.
2. Check:
9Steering shaft
Grasp the bottom of the forks and gently
rock the fork assembly back and forth.
Free play Adjust steering head.
3. Check:
9Steering smooth action
Turn the handlebar lock to lock.
Unsmooth action Adjust steering ring
nut.
4. Adjust:

Steering ring nut adjustment steps:
9Remove the number plate.
9Remove the handlebar and handle crown.
9Loosen the ring nut 1using the ring nut
wrench 2.
9Tighten the ring nut 3using ring nut wrench

NOTE:
9Apply the lithium soap base grease on the
thread of the steering shaft.
9Set the torque wrench to the ring nut wrench
so that they form a right angle.

9Loosen the ring nut one turn.
9Retighten the ring nut using the ring nut
wrench.

Avoid over-tightening.
9Check the steering shaft by turning it lock to
lock. If there is any binding, remove the
steering shaft assembly and inspect the
steering bearings.
9Install the plain washer 5, handle crown 6,
plain washer 7, steering shaft nut 8, han-
dlebar 9, handlebar holder (upper) 0 and
number plate q.
NOTE:
9The handlebar holder (upper) should be
installed with the punched mark aforward.
9Install the handlebar so that the marks b
are in place on both sides.
9Install the handlebar so that the projection
Cof the handlebar holder (upper) is posi-
tioned at the mark on the handlebar as
shown.
9Insert the end of the fuel breather hose w
into the hole in the steering shaft.

First tighten the bolts on the front side of
the handlebar holder (upper), and then
tighten the bolts on the rear side.
