Main switch/steering lock The main switch/steering lock controls
the ignition and lighting systems, and is
used to lock the steering. The various
positions are described below.

All electrical systems are supplied with
power, and the engine can be started.
The key cannot be removed.

OFF
All electrical systems are off. The key
can be removed.

LOCK
The steering is locked, and all electrical
systems are off. The key can be re-
moved.
To lock the steering1. Turn the handlebars all the way to
the left.
2. Push the key in from the “OFF” po-
sition, and then turn it to “LOCK”
while still pushing it.
3. Remove the key.
To unlock the steeringPush the key in, and then turn it to
“OFF” while still pushing it.

WARNING
_ Never turn the key to “OFF” or
“LOCK” while the motorcycle is
moving, otherwise the electrical
systems will be switched off, which
may result in loss of control or an
accident. Make sure that the motor-
cycle is stopped before turning the
key to “OFF” or “LOCK”. _1. Push.

The steering is locked, and the taillight
and auxiliary light are on, but all other
electrical systems are off. The key can
be removed.
The steering must be locked before the
key can be turned to “ ”.

an extended length of time, other-
wise the battery may discharge. _

Indicator and warning lights

Neutral indicator light “ ”
This indicator light comes on when the
transmission is in the neutral position.

Oil level warning light “ ”
This warning light comes on when the
engine oil level is low.
The electrical circuit of the warning light
can be checked according to the fol-
lowing procedure.
1. Set the engine stop switch to “ ”
and turn the key to “ON”.
2. Shift the transmission into the neu-
tral position or pull the clutch lever.
3. Push the start switch. If the warn-
ing light does not come on while
pushing the start switch, have a
Yamaha dealer check the electri-
cal circuit.NOTE:_ Even if the oil level is sufficient, the
warning light may flicker when riding on
a slope or during sudden acceleration
or deceleration, but this is not a mal-
function. _

Fuel tank cap To open the fuel tank cap
Open the fuel tank cap lock cover, in-
sert the key into the lock, and then turn
it 1/4 turn clockwise. The lock will be re-
leased and the fuel tank cap can be
opened.
To close the fuel tank cap
1. Push the fuel tank cap into posi-
tion with the key inserted in the
lock. 2. Turn the key counterclockwise to
the original position, remove it,
and then close the lock cover.
NOTE:_ The fuel tank cap cannot be closed un-
less the key is in the lock. In addition,
the key cannot be removed if the cap is
not properly closed and locked. _

_ Make sure that the fuel tank cap is
properly closed before riding. _

Fuel Make sure that there is sufficient fuel in
the tank. Fill the fuel tank to the bottom
of the filler tube as shown.

since fuel may deteriorate paint-
ed surfaces or plastic parts.

connection.

Check the fuel tank breather hose
for cracks or damage, and replace
it if damaged.

Make sure that the end of the fuel
tank breather hose is not blocked,
and clean it if necessary.

To remove the rider seat1. Insert the key into the seat lock,
and then turn it as shown.
2. Pull the rider seat off.To install the rider seat
1. Insert the projection on the front of
the rider seat into the seat holder
as shown, and then push the rear
of the seat down to lock it in place.
2. Remove the key.Passenger seat
To remove the passenger seat
1. Remove the rider seat.
2. Pull the passenger seat up.
To install the passenger seat1. Insert the projection on the rear of
the passenger seat and the hooks
on the front of the passenger seat
into the seat holders as shown,
and then push the seat toward the
back.

Storage compartment This storage compartment is designed
to hold a genuine Yamaha U-LOCK.
(Other locks may not fit.) When placing
a U-LOCK in the storage compartment,
securely fasten it with the straps. When
the U-LOCK is not in the storage com-
partment, be sure to secure the straps
to prevent losing them.
When storing the owner’s manual or
other documents in the storage com-
partment, be sure to wrap them in a
plastic bag so that they will not get wet.
When washing the motorcycle, be
careful not to let any water enter the
storage compartment.

Adjusting the front fork This front fork is equipped with spring
preload adjusting bolts, rebound damp-
ing force adjusting screws and com-
pression damping force adjusting
screws.

_ Always adjust both fork legs equal-
ly, otherwise poor handling and loss
of stability may result. _
Spring preload
To increase the spring preload and
thereby harden the suspension, turn
the adjusting bolt on each fork leg in di-
rection
a. To decrease the spring pre-
load and thereby soften the
suspension, turn the adjusting bolt on
each fork leg in direction
b.NOTE:_ Align the appropriate groove on the ad-
justing mechanism with the top of the
front fork cap bolt. _

Refill with the same type of brake
fluid. Mixing fluids may result in a
harmful chemical reaction and
lead to poor braking or clutch per-
formance.
l
Be careful that water does not en-
ter the brake fluid reservoir when
refilling. Water will significantly
lower the boiling point of the fluid
and may result in vapor lock.
l
Brake fluid may deteriorate paint-
ed surfaces or plastic parts. Al-
ways clean up spilled fluid
immediately.
l
As the brake pads wear, it is nor-
mal for the brake fluid level to
gradually go down. However, if the
brake fluid level goes down sud-
denly, have a Yamaha dealer
check the cause.
l
Make sure to return the fluid reser-
voir diaphragm to the original
shape before installing it.
