Wheel bolts and rims
Wheel bolt s
Wheel bolts must be clean and loosen/t ighten
eas ily.
Rims
Rims with a bolted rim ring* or with bolted wheel
covers* consist of multiple pieces . These compo­
nents were bolted together using special bolts
and a special procedure . You must not repair or
d isassemble them¢.&, .
A WARNING -
Wheel bolts that are t ightened or repaired in­
correctly can become loose and result in loss
of vehicle control, which increases the risk of
an accident. For the correct tightening specif i­
cation, refer to¢
page 284, After changing a
wheel.
- Always keep the wheel bolts and the
threads in the whee l hub clean and free of
grease.
- Only use wheel bolts that fit the rim.
- Always have damaged rims repaired by an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility. Never repair or d isassemble
rims yourself, because this increases the risk
of an accident.
Winter tires
W inter tires significantly improve the veh icle's
handling when driving in winter condit ions . Be­
cause of the ir construction (width, compound,
tread pattern), summe r tires provide less trac­
tion o n ice and snow.
"' Use winter t ires on all fo ur wheels.
"' Only use winter t ires that are approved for your
vehicle.
"' Please note tha t the maximum permitted
speed may be lower with winter tires ¢

authorized Audi dealer o r authorized Audi Serv­
ice Facility can inform you about the maximum
permitted speed for your tires.

Tires and wheel s
The effectiveness of winte r tires is reduced great ­
ly when the tread is worn down to a depth of
0.15 7 inch (4 mm). The characteristics of winter
tires also decrease greatly as the tire ages, re­ gardless of the rema in ing tread.
A WARNING
=
- Never drive faster than the max imum per­
mitted speed for your tires. This could cause
the t ires to heat up too much. This increases
the risk of an accident because it can cause
the t ire to burst.
- Always adapt your driving to the road and
traffic cond itions. Drive carefully and reduce
your speed on icy or slippery roads. Even
winter t ires can lose tract ion on black ice.
@) For the sake of the environment
Reinstall summer tires at the app ropr iate
time, beca use they prov ide bette r handling
when roads are free of snow and ice. Summer
tires cause less road noise, tire wear and fue l
consumpt ion .
(D Tips
You can also use all season tires instead of
winter tires . Please note that in some coun ­
tries where winter tires are required, on ly
winter tires w ith the .& symbo l may be per­
mitted.
Snow chains
Snow chains improve traction in the snow .
"'On ly install snow cha ins on the front wheels.
This applies a lso to vehicles with a ll w heel
drive* .

"'Check and correct the seating of the snow
chains if necessary after driving a few feet. Fol­
low the instructions from the manufacturer.
"' Note the maximum permitted speed when dr iv­
ing with snow chains. Do not exceed 30 mph (50 km/h) .

Emergency assistance

-The wheel bolts should be clean and easy to
turn . C heck for di rt and cor ros ion on t he
mating surfaces o f both the wheel and the
h ub. Remove all dirt from these surfaces be­
fo re remo unting the wheel.
Tires with unidirectional tread design
Tires with unidirectional tread design must be
mounted with their tread pattern pointed in the
right direction.
Using a spare tire with a tread pattern
intended for use in a specific direction
When us ing a spare tire with a tread pattern in­
tended for use in a spec ific d irection, p lease note
the following:
- The direct ion o f rotat ion is marked by an a rrow
o n the side of the tire.
- If the spare tire has to be installed in the incor­
rect d irection, use the spare tire only tempora­
rily s ince the tire w ill not be ab le to achieve its
o ptimum performance charac ter istics wi th re­
gar d to a quaplaning, noise and wea r.
- We recommend t hat you pay particular atten­
tion to this fac t during wet weathe r and t hat
yo u ad just yo ur speed to match road condi­
tio ns.
- Replace the f lat t ire with a new one and have i t
i ns ta lled on yo ur ve hicl e as soon as possibl e to
r esto re th e han dling adv antages of a unidi re c­
tio nal ti re.
Notes on wheel changing
Plea se read the info rmation ¢ page 2 60 if you
are go ing to use a spare tire which is different
from the tires on your vehicle.
Af te r yo u change a tir e:
- Check the tire pressure on the spare immedi­
ately after installation.
- Have the wheel bolt tightening torque
checked with a torque wrench as soon as pos -

sible by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified service station.
- With steel and alloy wheel rims, the wheel
bolts are correctly tightened at a torque of
90 ft lb (120 Nm ).
- If you notice that the wheel bolts are corroded
and difficult to turn while changing a tire,
they should be replaced before you check the
t ightening torque.
- Replace the flat tire with a new one and have
it installed on your vehicle as soon as possi ­
ble. Remount the wheel cover .
Until then , drive with extra care and at reduced
speeds.

were facto ry insta lled, then be sure to read

eve n a flat tire and the jack and tool kit are

men t and a re not loose in the passeng er
co mpart me nt.
- In an accident or sudde n maneuver they

hicle .
- Always s to re damaged wh eel, jack and tools
s ecure ly i n t he luggage co m pa rt m ent. Oth­
erwi se, in an a ccid ent or sudde n m aneu ve r
t hey cou ld fly forw ard , cau sing injury to pa s­
s engers in the veh icle.
