tions.
Lights
The headlight settings should be checked with
the trailer attached before driving off. Check to
make sure both vehicle and trailer lights are
working properly.
Safety chains
Be sure trailer safety chains are properly connect­
ed from the trailer to the hitch on the vehicle.
L eave enough slack in the chains to permit turn­
ing corners . When you install safety chains, make
sure they will not drag on the road when you are
driving .
The cha ins shou ld cross under the trailer tongue
to prevent it from dropping in case of separat ion
from the hitch.
Driver messages
Driving with a trailer requires extra caution.
Weight distribution
Towing a loaded trailer with an empty car results
in a high ly unstable distribution of weight .
If this
cannot be avo ided, drive at very low speeds only
to avoid the risk of losing steering control.
A "balanced" rig is easier to operate and control.
This means that the tow vehicle should be loaded to the extent possible and permissible, whi le
keep ing the trailer as light as possible under the
circumstances . Whenever possible, transfer
some cargo to the luggage compartment of the
tow vehicle whi le observ ing tongue load require­
ments and vehicle loading considerations.
Speed
The highe r the speed, the more difficult it be­
comes for the driver to control the rig. Do not
drive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, weather or wind conditions are unfavorable
-particularly when
going downhill.
Tra iler towing
Reduce vehicle speed immediately if the trailer
shows the slightest sign of swaying.
Do not try
to stop the swaying by accelerating.
Observe speed limits. In some areas, speeds for
vehicles towing trailers are lower than for regular
vehicles .
Always apply brakes early. When driving down­
hill, shift into a lower gear to use the engine
braking effect to slow the vehicle . Use of the
brakes alone can cause them to overheat and fail.
Coolant temperature
T he coo lant temperature gauge ~ page 11 must
be observed carefully. The coolant temperature
can increase if you drive on long inclines in a low
gear at high engine speeds . Reduce your speed
immediately if the LEDs in the top part of the dis­
play turn on.

Anyone not properly restrained in a moving
vehicle is at a much greater risk in an acci­

Trailer towing
information
Important to know

Your vehicle handles differently when towing a
trailer because of the addit ional weight and dif­
ferent weight distribution . Safety, performance
and economy will greatly depend on how careful­
ly you load your trailer and operate you r rig.
Before you actually tow your trailer, pract ice
turning, stopping and backing up in an area away
from traffic . Keep pract ic ing until you have be­
come complete ly familiar w ith the way your vehi­
cle-trailer combination behaves and responds.

Introduction

You can measure and analyze lap times with the
lap timer in the display.
Opening the lap timer
• Open the first Vehicle tab (trip computer) using
the
l <1 t> I button on the mult ifunct ion steer ing
wheel.
• Se lect o n the multifunction steering wheel: left
contro l button
> Lap times .
Operating the lap t imer
• On t he multifunction steer ing whee l, tu rn the
left thumbwheel

Timing laps
• T o start timing manually, se lect Start lap 1 in
the menu.
Assistance systems
• To star t timing automatica lly as soon as you
beg in to drive, select
Start lap 1 by driving off
or Start b y driving off in the menu.
• To meas ure the lap time, select New lap in the
menu. This starts timing the next lap at the
same time.
A fter completing a lap, the difference between
the last lap and the previo us best lap time will be
indicated with a" -" or" +".
Pausing timing and displaying a split time
• To insert a pause m , select Pause in the menu .
• To resume timing, select Resume in the menu.
• To display a sp lit t ime, select Split time in the
menu. The split
time [~] appears for app rox i­
mate ly 10 seconds in the instr ument cluster.

Resetting timing
• Using the mult ifunct io n steer ing whee l, select
Reset times i n the menu.

- A maximum of 99 lap t imes can be meas­
ured.
- If tim ing is pa used, you can continue it later
even if you switch the ignition off.
- Saved lap times cannot be indivi dually de ­
leted from the total results .

Predictive efficiency
assist
Description
Applies to: vehicles with predictive efficiency assist
General information
The predictive efficiency assist helps the driver to
d rive with anticipation and therefore helps to
save fuel. The system accesses predict ive trip da­
ta (including speed limits, inclines and the radius
of curves) from the navigation system*. Informa­
tion from the camera-based traffic sign recogni­
tion* is also applied to recogni ze traffic signs
r::;i page 109 .
The messages displayed depend on the naviga ­
tion data * being up-to-date and the correct iden­
tification by the traffic sign recognition*.
When adaptive cruise contro l* is switched off,
the predict ive efficiency assist only provides noti­
fications without controlled interventions. When
adaptive cruise control* is switched on, the sys­
tem responds to upcoming situations automati ­
cally .

Indicator in the instrument cluster display
Predictive messages appear in the instrument
cluster display to show the driver the appropriate
time to coast when a situation ahead requires
you to drive at a lower speed.
The messages are only shown if the cr uise control
system* or adaptive cruise control* is switched
off.

If the Driver assistance display is not shown in
the instrument cluster display, you can open it
using the multif unction steering wheel buttons
c:;, page 13.
Based on the graphic display, you can determine
if the system is maintaining a distance to the ve­
hicle driving ahead and what that distance is .
No vehicle -no veh icle was detected driv ing
ahead .
Silver vehicle -a vehicle was detected driving
ahead.

The five distance bars on the gauge© represent
the set distance (refer to
c:;, page 118 for infor­
mation on how to change the distance). If you
fall below the selected d istance, the distance
bars become red from the bottom upwa rd .
A WARNING
Applies to: vehicles with automatic transmis­
sion: If you press the
ISET ! button when driv­
ing at speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), the
vehicle accelerates automatically up to 20
mph (30 km/h), which is the minimum speed
that can be set.
(D Tips
- If you switch the ignitio n or the adaptive
cruise control system off, the set speed is
erased for safety reasons .
- T he electronic stabilization control (ESC)
and the anti-slip-regulation (ASR) are auto ­
matically switched on when the adaptive
cruise control is switched on.

Assistance systems
In a speed range under 40 mph (65 km/h), traffic
jam assist can help to keep the vehicle within a
lane calculated by the system. Within the limits
of the system, the system controls the steering
automatically when adaptive cruise control is
switched on . Since traffic jam assist is only an as­
sist system, the driver must always keep his or
her hands on the steering wheel and be ready to
steer. The driver can override the control at any
time by actively steering.
The system is designed for driving on express­
ways and highways.
Switching traffic jam assist on and off

W ith in the limits of the system, pre sense front
can warn you of impending coll is ions and initiate
t he corresponding brak ing maneuvers or the sup­
port ing measures when avo iding a collision .
I f detected in time, the system can rank the dan­
ge rous situation as cr itical if a ve hicle driving
a head brakes s udden ly, if your own vehicle is ap­
p roaching a s ignificantly s lower vehicle at high
speed or when there is an oncom ing vehicle d ur­
i n g a t urning maneuve r.
If detection is not poss ible , the n pre sense front

tively steer ing . Evasive steering support is availa­
ble at speeds between approximately 20 mph
(30 km/h) and 90 mph (150 km/h).
Tu rn as sist
When starting to drive a nd up to speeds of maxi­
mum
6 mph (10 km/h), the turn assist uses a
braking intervention to prevent your vehicle from
colliding with an oncoming vehicle when tu rning
left or right (available in certain countries). The
braking intervention causes your vehicle to stay
in its lane.
A WARNING
- Pre sense front cannot overcome the laws of
physics . It is a system des igned to assist and
it cannot prevent a collision in every circum­
stance. The drive r must always i nte rvene.
T he driver is always responsib le for b raking
at the correct time. Do not let the increased
safety provided tempt you into taking risks .
This cou ld increase your risk of a collision .
- The system can deploy incorrectly due to
system-specific limits .
- Please note that the sensors and the camera
do not always detect all objects or lane
markings. This increases the risk of an acci­
dent .

Audi active Lane assist
Description
Applies to : vehicles wi th A udi act ive la n e ass ist
Active lane ass ist (lane departure warning) de­
tects lane marker lines within the l imits of the
system using a camera in the windshield . If you
are approach ing a detected lane marker l ine and
it appears likely that you will leave the lane, the
system w ill warn you with corrective steering.
You can override this steering at any time. If you pass over a line, the steering whee l will vibrate
lightly . In order for this warn ing v ibration to oc­
cur, it must first be sw itched on in the Infotain­
ment system. Act ive lane assis t is ready for oper­
ation when the lane marker line is detected on at
least one side of the veh icle .
The system is designed for driving on express­ ways and h ighways and therefore only activates
at speeds above approx imately 40 mph (65 km/
h).
Applies to: vehicles with side assist: if you acti­
vate a turn s ignal when active lane assist is ready
and it classifies a lane change as critical because
of vehicles traveling alongside you or approach­ i n g you, the re w ill be noticeable corrective steer­
i n g shortly before you leave the lane. This will at­
tempt to keep your veh icle in the lane.
Applies to: vehicles without side assist: the ready
system does not wa rn you if you activate a turn
signal befo re cross ing the lane marker line. In

A WARNING
,-
- The system warns the driver that the vehicle
is leaving the lane using correct ive steering .
The driver is always responsible for keeping
the vehicle within the lane.
- The system can help you keep the vehicle in the lane, but it does not drive by itse lf . Al­
ways keep your hands on the steering
wheel.
- Cor rective steering may not occur in certain
situations, such as du ring heavy braking.
- There may be cases where the camera does
not recognize all lane marker lines. Correc­
tive stee ring can only take place on the s ide
of the vehicle where lane marker lines are
detected.
- Othe r road structures or objects could poss i­
bly be identified un intent ionally as lane
marker lines . As a result, corrective steering
may be unexpected or may not occur.
- The camera view can be restricted, for ex­
ample by vehicles driving ahead or by rain,
snow, heavy spray or light shining into the
camera. This can result in active lane ass ist
not detecting the lane marker lines or de­
tect ing them incorrectly .
- In certain s ituations where visibility is low,
the vehicle may switch from an "early" to
"late" steering correction .
- Under certain cond it ions such as ruts in the
road, an inclined roadway or crosswinds, the
corrective steer ing alone may not be enough
to keep the vehicle in the m iddle of the lane .
- For safety reasons, act ive la ne assist must
not be used when there are poor road and/
or weather conditions such as slippery roads, fog, gravel, heavy rain, snow and the

potential for hydroplaning. Using active lane
assist under these conditions may increase
the risk of a crash.

If the system is switched on but is not ready to
provide warn ings, one of the following could be
the cause:
- There is no lane marker line .
- The relevant lane marker lines are not detected
(for example, markings in a construction zone
or because they are obstructed by snow, dirt,
water or light ing) .
- The vehicle speed is below the activation speed of approximately 40 mph (65 km/h).
- The lane is too narrow or too wide.
- The curve is too narrow.
- The driver's hands are not on the steering
wheel.
