Trailer towing
Driving with a trailer
General information
Your Audi was designed primarily for passen­
ger transportation .
If you plan to tow a trailer, p lease remember
that the additional load will affect durability,
economy and performance .
Trailer towing not on ly places more stress on
the vehicle, it also calls for more concentra­
tion from the driver.
For this reason, always follow the operating
and driving instructions provided and use
common sense.

If you are going to tow a trai ler, you must
activate the trailer operation mode

Technical requirements
Trailer hitch
Use a weight-carrying hitch conforming to the
gross trailer weight. The hitch must be suita­ ble for your vehicle and trailer and must be
mounted securely on the vehicle's chassis at a
technically sound location . Use only a trailer
hitch with a removable ball mount. Always
check with the trailer hitch manufacturer to
make sure that you are using the cor rect
hitch.
Do not use a bumper hitch.
The hitch must be installed in such a way that
it does not interfere with the impact-absorb­
ing bumper system. No modifications should
be made to the vehicle exhaust and brake sys­
tems . From time to time, check that all hitch
mounting bolts remain securely fastened.
When you are not towing a trailer, remove the
trai ler hitch ball mount. This prevents the
hitch from causing damage should your vehi­
cle be struck from behind

Trailer brakes
If your trailer is equipped with a brakin g sys­
tem, check to be sure that it conforms to all
regulations.
T he trailer hydraulic brake system must not be
directly connected to the vehicle's hydraulic
brake system .
Safety chains
Always use safety chains between your veh icle
and the trailer.
Trailer lights
Trailer lights must meet all regulations. Be
sure to check with your Audi dealer for correct
wiring, switches and relays.
Mirrors
If you are unable to see the traffic behind you
using the regular outside mirrors, then you
must install extended mirrors. It is important
that you
always have clear v is ion to the rear .
A WARNING
--
After removing the trailer hitch, do not
store it in your vehicle . In case of sudden
braking, the hitch could fly forward and in­
jure you or your passengers.
Operating instructions
Maximum trailer weight
A trailer for your vehicle is limited to a typical
class 1 or class 2 trailer.
Trailer load distribution
Be sure the load in the trailer is held securely
in place to prevent it from shift ing forward,
backward or sideways.
Never allow a passenger to ride in a trailer

Engine cooling system
Towing a trailer makes the engine work hard­
er . It is important that the cooling system 's
performance is up to the additional load.

A lways apply brakes early. When driving
downhill, shift into a lower gear to use the en­
g ine braking effect to slow the vehicle . Use of
the brakes alone can cause them to overheat
and fail.
Air su spen sion *
When driving with a trai ler, activate the trailer
mode of the air suspension. Switch the air
suspension trailer mode on when you are tow­
ing a trailer. This will limit the regulation by
the air suspens ion while driving. Select in the
MMI:

Coolant t emperatur e
The coolant temperature gauge¢ page 11
must be observed carefully. The coolant tem­
perature can increase if you drive on long in­
clines in a low gear at high engine speeds. Re­
duce your speed immed iate ly if the LEDs in
the top pa rt of the display turn on.

A WARNING
Anyone not properly restrained in a mov­
ing veh icle is at a much greater risk in an
accident. Never let anyone r ide in your car
who is not prope rly wearing the restraints
provided by Audi .
Trailer towing tips
Important to know
Your vehicle handles differently when tow ing
-
a trailer because of the addit ional weight and
d ifferent weight dist ribution. Safety, perform­
ance and economy w ill greatly depend on how
carefu lly you load your trailer and operate
your rig.
Before you actually tow your trailer, practice
turn ing, stopp ing and back ing up in an area
away from traffic. Keep practicing until you
have become comp letely familiar with the way your vehicle
-trailer combination behaves and
responds .
Backi ng up is diffic ult and requi res p ractice.
Backing up w ith a trailer generally req uires
steering action opposite to that when backing
up your vehicle without a trailer.
Maintai n a greater d ista nce between yo ur ve­
hicle and the one in fron t of yo u. You w ill need
more room to stop. To compensate for the
trailer, you will need a larger than normal
turning radius.
When passing, remember that you cannot ac­ ce le rate as fast as you norma lly would be­
ca use of the added load. Make sure you have
enough room to pass . After passing, allow
plenty of room for your trailer before chang­
ing lanes again.
Avoid jerky starts, sharp tu rns o r rapid lane
changes.

- Do not tow a trailer during the break-in
period of your vehicle.
- If you tow a trailer, your Audi may re­
quire more frequent maintenance due to
the extra load ¢
page 294.
Parking on a slope
Do not park on a slope with a trailer. If it can­
not be avoided, do so only after doing the fol­
lowing:
When parking:
.,. App ly the foot brake .
.,. Have someone place choc ks unde r both the
vehicle and the trailer wheels.
.,. With chocks in place, slowly release the
brakes unt il the whee l chocks absorb the
load .
.,. Turn the whee ls towards the curb.
.,. Apply the parking brake.
.,. Select the P selector lever posit ion.

Using the right fuel helps keep the environ ­
men t clean and preven ts engine damage.
Fuel recommendation
The fuel recomme nded fo r yo ur vehicle is un­
leaded premium
g rade gasolin e. A udi recom­
mends using TO P TIE R D etergent Gaso line
w it h a mi nimum oc tane ra ting o f 91 A KI (9 5
RON ). For more inform ation on TOP TIER De­
t ergent Gasoline, please go to the off ici al
websi te (www .toptie rgas .com) .
T he recommended gasoline octane rating for
your eng ine can also be fo und o n a label loc at­
e d on the ins ide of the fuel filler flap . This ra t­
i ng may be specified as A KI or RO N.
Your veh icle may also be operated using un­
l e ad ed regular g asoline with a min imum o c­
tane rating of 87 AKI/91 RO N. However, using
87 AK I/91 RO N octa ne fue l w ill sli ght ly re ­
d uce eng ine perfo rmance .
Use unleaded ga soline only . Unleaded g aso­
line is available th rougho ut the USA, Ca na da,
an d in most E uropean cou ntries . We recom ­
mend that you do not ta ke yo ur vehicle to
areas or countries where unleaded gasoline
may not be ava ilable.

Octane rating
Octane rating ind icates a gaso line's ability to
r es ist engine d amag ing "kno ck" cau sed b y
p remature ign ition and detona tion. There fore,
buy ing the correct grade of gaso line is very
importa nt to he lp prevent possible engine
damage and a loss of engine performance.
Gasoline mos t common ly used in the Unite d
States an d Canada has the following octane

Use of gasoline containing alcohol or
MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether)
You may use unlea ded gasoline blen ded wi th
alcohol o r M TB E (commonly referred to as
oxygenates) if the blende d mixture meets the
f o llow ing criteria:
Blend of gasoline methanol (wood alcohol or
methyl alcohol)
- Anti -k n ock index mus t be 87 A KI or higher.
- Blend must contain no mor e than 3% meth-
anol.
- Blend must contain more than 2% co-sol-
vents .
Blend of gasoline and ethanol (grain alcohol
or ethyl alcohol)
- Anti -knoc k index must be 87 AKI or h igher.
- Blend must not co nta in mo re tha n 15%
ethanol.
Blend of ga soline and MTBE
- Anti-knock index must be 87 AKI or high er. ..,.

Seasonally adjusted gasoline
Many gasoline grades are blended to perform
espec ially we ll for winter or summer driv ing.
During seasonal change-over, we suggest that
you fill up at busy gas stat ions where the sea­
sonal adjustment is more likely to be made in
time.
(CT) Note
- Methanol fuels which do not meet these
requirements may cause corrosion and
damage to plastic and rubber compo­
nents in the fuel system .
- Do not use fuels that fai l to meet the
specified criteria in this chapter.
- If yo u are unable to determine whether
or not a particular fuel blend meets the
specifications, ask your service station or
its fuel sup plier.
- Do not use fuel for which the contents cannot be identified.
- Fuel system damage and performance
problems resulting from the use of fuels
different from those specified are not
the respons ibility of Audi and are not
covered under the New Vehicle or the Emission Control System Warranties.
- If you experience a loss of fuel economy
or driveability and performance prob­ l ems due to the use of one of these fuel
blends, we recommend that you switch
to unblended fuel.
Gasoline additives
A major concern among many auto manufac ­
turers is carbon deposit build- up caused by
the type of gasoline you use.
A lthough gasoline grades differ from one
manufacturer to another, they have certain
things in common. All gasoline g rades contain
substances that can cause deposits to co llect
on vital engine parts, such as fuel injectors
and intake valves. Although most gasoline
brands include additives to keep engine and fuel
systems clean, they a re not equally effec­
tive .
A udi recommends using TOP TIER Detergent
Gasoline. For more information on TOP TIER
Detergent Gasoline, please go to the official
website (www.toptiergas.com).
After an extended period of using inadequate
f uels, carbon deposit build-ups can rob yo ur
engine of peak performance.
CD Note

quality is not covered by the Aud i New Ve­
hicle Limited Warranty.
Diesel fuel
Applies to veh icles: w ith diesel engine
Always use ULSD (Ultra Low Su lfu r Diesel)
No. 2. The U LSD No. 2 meets the ASTM D975.
Diesel fuel with concentrations of biodiese l
higher than 5 % s uch as Bl 1, B2O or BlOO are
strictly prohib ited.
Serv ice stat ion fuel pumps are labeled with
the correct fuel information for easy recogn i­
t io n by the user. If the diesel fuel pump is not
labeled ask the station operator what fue l is
being dispensed before filling up your vehicle.
ULSD No. 2 may not be available outside the
USA and Canada. Be sure to check before trav­
eling to other countries.
ULSD No. 2 can become thicker in very cold
temperatu res, and this can impair the en­
gine's start ing and running. Depending on the
season, gas stat ions provide ULSD No. 2 that
flows better in cold temperatures so that you
can continue operating your vehicle as usua l.
CD Note
-Yo ur vehicle's diesel engine was de­
signed soley for use with ULSD No. 2.
Therefore, never use gasoline, heating
oil, other fuels or flow improvers. These
conta in substances that will severely
damage the fuel system and the engine.

- If you p ut any amount of incorrect fue l in
t h e fue l tank, do not start the engine un­
der any circumstances. Immediately con­
tact the nearest author ized Audi dealer
or authorized Audi Service Facility for as­
s istance. These fuels contain substances
that can severely damage the fuel sys­
tem and the engin e if the engine is start­
ed.
Fuel tank
Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the r ight rear
side panel behind the fuel f iller flap.
If the power loc king system should fail, you
can st ill open the flap manually -for detai led
instructions see ¢
page 221.
You can find the fue l tank capacity o f you r ve ­
hicle in
¢ page 292.
The label on the inside of the fuel filler flap
tells you the cor rec t f uel for yo ur vehicle . For
more in formation about fuel specificat ions,
see
¢ page 217 .
Your veh icle fuel tank has an on board refue l­
ling vapor recove ry system . T his feature he lps
to p revent fuel vapo rs from escaping from the
tank and polluting the environment whi le you
refuel your ve hicle. In order to fill the tank
properly whi le protect ing the e nv ironment,
p lease follow t his refueling procedure careful­
ly .

Under no rma l operating condi tions, neve r
car ry add itiona l fuel containe rs in your car.
G as can iste rs a nd other c ontaine rs used to
t ran sport fue l can be dange rous. Such con­
t ainers, full or empty, may lea k and co uld
cause a fi re in a co llision . If you must
transport fue l to use for yo ur lawn mower,
snow blower, etc., be very ca refu l and al­
ways observe local and state laws regard­
ing the use, transportat io n and storage of

tainer meets industry standa rds (ANSI/
ASTM F852 -86).

Refuelling procedure
.. Inse rt the fue l nozzle from the gasoline
pump into the fue l filler neck as far as it will
go.
.. Se lect a medium refuelling rate so that the
no zzle switches off automatica lly when the
tank is full.
Putting the fuel cap back on
.. After filling your tank, twist the fuel fi ller
cap clockwise as far as it will go.
.. Close the fuel filler flap.
To avoid fuel spi lling or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel fi ller cap properly
and completely. An improperly closed fuel fill­
er cap may a lso cause the MIL lamp
q poge 29
to come on.
A WARNING
Improper refueling or handling of fue l can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns .
- Fuel is highly flammable and can cause
severe burns and other injuries.
- Failure to shut the engine off while refu­
eling and/or to insert the pump nozzle
fully into the fuel filler neck could cause
fuel to spray out of filler neck or to over­
flow. Fuel spray and overflow ing fuel can
c ause a fi re.
- Never use a cellular telephone wh ile re­
fueling. The electromagnetic radiation
can cause sparks that can ign ite fue l va­
pors and cause a fire.
- Never get back into you r vehicle while re­
fueling. If in exceptiona l circumstances
yo u must get back in your vehicle whi le
refue ling, make certain that you close
the door and touch metal to discharge
static electricity before touching the fill­
er nozzle again. Static electricity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
released during refueling.
- Never smoke or have an open flame any­
where in or near your vehicle when refu ­
eling or filling a portable fuel container .
- For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not travel w ith a portable fuel container in your vehicle. The con­
tainer, full or empty may leak and could
cause a fire, especially in a crash.
- If, under exceptional circumstances, you
must transport a portable fuel container,
please observe the following:
- Never fill a portable fuel container
whi le it is anywhere in or on the vehicle
(for example, in the luggage compa rt­
ment, or on the trunk) . Static electrici­
ty can build up while filling and can ig­
nite fuel vapors causing a fire.
- Always place a portab le fue l container
on the ground before fi lling.
- Always keep the filler nozzle complete­
ly inside the portab le container before
and during filling.
- If filling a portab le container made of
metal, the f iller nozzle must always be
in contact with the container. This will
help prevent static electricity from d is­
c harging and cause a fire.
- Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are
highly flammable .
- Always observe local and state/provin­
cial laws regarding the use, storage
and transportation of fuel containers .
- Make certain the fuel container meets
industry standards (ANSI/ ASTM
F852 -86) .

If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it
should be removed immediately to prevent
damage to the paint .
@) For the sake of the environment
As soon as the correctly operated no zzle
switches off automatically for the first
time, the tank is full. Do not try to add
more fuel because fuel may spill out . In
addition, the expansion space in the fuel
tank will be filled -causing the fuel to
overflow when it becomes warm and pol­
l ute the environment .

(D Tips
-Running yo ur engine while refuelling
may cause vapors to escape or even
cause fue l to spill out of the tank. This
would then shut off the fuel nozzle be­
fore the tank is full.
- Do not refuel your veh icle w ith the igni­
tion switched on . The fuel gauge may
otherwise not indicate the correct fuel
level afte r refuelling.
- Diesel veh icles * are equipped w ith a die­
se l m isf ueling protector. It allows the
vehicle to be f ueled on ly w ith a diesel
fuel pump nozzle . A wo rn o r damaged
no zzle or a nozz le tha t is too small may
no t be able to open the d iesel misfueling
protector. If this is the case, try turning
the nozz le before inserting it in the fue l
filler neck, use a different fuel p ump or
see your authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized repa ir facility for assistance.
- The fuel filler flap of your vehicle is not locked when you lock the vehicle from
the i nside.
Fuel filler flap emergency release
You con open the fuel filler flop by hand if the
power locking system should fail.

move the locking mechanisms .

The emergency release mechanism is located
behind the right side trim panel in the lug­
gage compartment .

Selective catalytic
reduction
General information
App lies to vehicles: wit h diesel engine
On vehicles with se lective cata lytic reduct ion,
an urea solution (AdB lue) is injected into the
exhaust system before a nitrogen ox ide cata­
lytic co nve rter to reduce nitrogen emissions. ..,

The AdBlue is stored in a separate tank in the
ve hicle . The AdBlue usage accounts for a p­
prox imately 0.5% to 1.2% of the diese l fuel
that is used.
You must refill the AdBl ue or have it refilled
by your authorized A udi dealer or qualif ied
wo rkshop as soon as the Ad Bl ue refill mes­
sage appears in t he instrument cl uster
c::;,page223.
A WARNING
Failure to heed Ad B lue refi ll information in
t he inst rument cluste r can p revent the ve ­
hicl e from b ein g started an d driven. If the
vehicle ca nno t be driven an d an emergency
a rise s, p erso nal inju ry can occur.

This message appears if the system detects it
was filled incorrectly. Drive immediate ly to
the nearest qualified workshop to have the malfunct ion repaired. Otherwise you will not
be able to start the engine aga in once you
stop it.

A special refill bottle must be used to fill the
AdBlue.

The Ad Blue f iller tube is located near the die­
se l filler t ube. A lways add 1.5 gallons (5 .7 lit­
ers) of AdBlue (three bottles). This is the m ini­
mum amount required to ensure the system
detects the refilling and to start the eng ine.
The Ad Blue tank capacity is approximately
4.5 gal lons ( 17 lite rs).

• Position the refill bottle o n the filler tube
and tur n the bottle clockw ise until it stops
tur ning

• Press lightly against the bottom of the bot­
tle @ to empty it. Continue p ressi ng the
bo ttom of the bottle unt il it i s empty or un­
t il fluid s tops flow ing in to the tank .
• Turn the bottle to the left w ithout pressing
on the bottom.
Closing the filler tube
• Tu rn the cap clockw ise on the fille r tu be
w ith the l ug wrench until you hear it t ighten
c ompletely.
• Close the tank cover .
After filling
The vehicle must be d riven. The system may
t ak e up to two m inu te s to dete ct t hat the
AdB lue has been filled .

the fluid, flush immediately with plenty of
water. Co nsu lt a phys ician if necessary.

- On ly use Ad B lue that conforms to the
standard ISO 22241-1. Do not mix any
add itives w ith the AdBl ue a nd do not d i­
lute it with water.
- Do not add Ad Bl ue to the diese l tank or
add diese l fuel to the Ad B lue tank. Mix­

The engine hood is released from inside the
vehicle .

Make sure the wiper arms are not raised up
from the w indshield. Otherw ise the paint
could be damaged.

- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam

Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment.

To help avoid injury, before yo u check any ­
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Sw itch off the ignition .
- Apply the parki ng brake.
- Move selector leve r to P (Park) .
- Always let the engine cool down . Hot
components w ill burn skin on contact .
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coo lant escaping from the engine
compa rtment. Wait unt il no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fu lly opening the hood.
- Keep ch ildren away from the engine com­
pa rtment.
- Never sp ill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents . They can cause a fire .
- Never touch the rad iator fan. The auxili­
ary electric fan is temperat ure controlled
and can sw itch on suddenly .
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap
when the engine is still warm . The cool­
a nt system is p ressu rized and hot cool­
a nt cou ld spray o ut.
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by plac ing a
thick rag ove r the cap when you open the
coo lant rese rvoir.
- Do not remove the engine cover under
any circumstances. This inc reases the
ris k of burns.
- If work on the fue l system o r the elec tri -
cal system is necessary:
