7 2 Seats and storage
Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into
the rearmost position .
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessa ry and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat i n the fol low ing ma nner:
• Move the front passenger seat into the rea r­
most position of the fore and aft adjustment
r ange

• Bring the backrest up to an ( almost) uprigh t
pos it ion .
Do not ride w it h the seat reclined .
• Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge
is as even as possible with the top of your
head . If that is not possible, try to adjust
the head restraint so that it is as close to
t h is position as possible

• Place your feet on the floor in front of the
passenger's seat .

The swi tches to adjust the sea t cushion and
the sea tback cor respond to the layou t, the de­
sig n and the function of the seat. The seats

Adjusting the seat
Position, angle and shape of the seat can be
adjusted electrically to ensure safe and
com­
fortable seating .
Read and follow the warning notices c:> A be­

Fore-and-aft adjustment
• Push the switch @forward or backward

Adjusting seat height
• Pull or p ush the switch @up o r down .
Front seat cushion up/ down

Adjusting seatback angle

WARNING
-Ad just the driver's seat only when the ve ­
h icle is stationary. Yo u risk an accident
otherwise.
- The power a djustment for the front seats
also works with the ignit ion sw itched off
or w ith the ignition key removed. For th is
reason, children should never be left ..,.

Correctly adjusted head restraints and
safety belts are an extremely effective
com bi nation of safety features.

If there are passengers in the rear seat, fold
the head restraints up on the occupied seats
or slide the ce nter head restraint upward at
least to the next notch ¢ &, .
Adjusting the outer head restraints
• To fold the head restraint out, pull on the
tab

until you feel it click into place.
Adjusting the center head restraint
• To move the head restrai nt up, hold it at the
s ides with both hands and slide it upward
u ntil you feel it click into p lace

Removing the center head restraint
• Move the head restraint upward as far as it
can go.
• Press the b utton -arrow- and pull the head
restraint out of the backrest¢&,.
Installing the center head restraint
• Slide the posts on the head restraint down
into the guides until you fee l the posts click
into place.
• Press the button -arrow- and sl ide the head
restraint all the way down . You should not
be able to pull the head restraint out of the
backrest.
A WARNING
- Only remove the rear seat head restraint when necessary in order to install a child
seat. Install the head restraint again im­ mediately once the child seat is removed .
Driving without head restraints or with
head restraints that are not properly ad­
justed increases the risk of serious or fa­
tal neck injury dramatica lly .
- The head restraints for the outer seats in
the second row must be folded up when
persons are being carried in the third row
seating* -danger of injury!

Armrest
The armrest contains a storage compartment
and two cup holders.

hicle be sure not to cover the ventilation
s lot between the rear lid and the lug­
gage compartment cover.
Protective liner
Dirty or wet objects con be tronsported under
the cargo floor in a protective tray.

T he sto rage room in the pro te ct ive tray can be
enlarged by folding the cargo floor forward or
removing it .
T he protect ive tray can be removed upward by
the grip.
On vehicles with
6 or 7 sea ts* the cargo floor
cannot be folded up, only raised. If the ca rgo
floor is removed, the hooks must be pushed
into the guides under the third row seating
whe n the cargo floor is re-installed.
& WARNING
When the cargo floor is folded upright, the
items being transported must not exceed
the maximum cargo height, 2/3 of the car­
go floor space with the floor folded for­
ward, or a weight of about 33 lb. (15 kg).
@ Tips
We recommend that you use a tie-down
strap to secure objects to the tie-down
eyelets on the right and left sides of the
vehicle.
· Ski sack
Applies to vehicles: with ski sack
The ski sack allows a maximum of 4 pairs of
skis or 2 snowboards to be carried inside the
vehicle.

the rear fastening eyes and pull the secur ing
strap tight by the free end @.
Storage
"' Re lease the securing strap for the sack .
"' Pull the sack to the rear over the folded
down seatback.
"' Raise the seatback unti l it is securely latch­
ed .
"' Fo ld up the empty sack.
"' Stow the ski sack in the luggage compart­
ment so that it cannot slide around.
_&. WARNING
-
- The ski sack is intended only for the
transportation of skis, snowboards and
other light objects. To reduce the risk of
serious persona l injury never transport
heavy or po inted ob jects in the ski sack .
- When bra king rapidly o r during an acci­
dent the load cou ld be displaced and
ca use inj ury to occupants.
- Sharp edges on the load must be cove red
for protect ion. Always fas ten the belt
t igh tly around the sack and its contents

(D Tips
Never stow the ski sack away if it's wet or
damp (for examp le, snow me lting from
skis). Let it dry complete ly before you stow
i t away.
Roof rack
First things first
A roof rack can be fitted to carry additional
luggage on the roof.
"' Always read and follow the instructions pro ­
vided by the roof rack manufacturer when the roof rack system must be installed .
If you are transporting luggage or other ob­
jects on the roof, p lease note the following:
- Your vehicle has spec ially designed aerody-
namic roof rails. Only install a roof rack spe­
cifically designed for your model. Contact
the nearest authorized Aud i dealer fo r infor­
mation on approved modu lar roof racks for
your vehicle.
- These approved roof racks are the bas is for a
complete roof rack system. Additional at­
t achments for the basic roof rack a re neces­
sary to safely transpo rt luggage, bicycles,
surf boards, skis or sma ll boats. All necessa­
ry hardware for these systems is available at
your authorized Audi dealer.
- We recommend that you keep the installa­
tion instructions for your roof rack system
together with your Owner's literature in the
veh icle.
When sh ould the roof rac k be remov ed?
- Before going through an automatic car wash
(it is best to ask the car wash operator for
advice) .
- When not in use, to reduce fuel cons ump ­
tion, wind noise and to guard against theft.
_&. WARNING
- Use of an unapproved roof rack or incor­
rect mounting of an approved roof rack

maneuvers when transporting cargo on
the roof of your vehicle.
- Never exceed the maximum permissible
load carrying capacity of the roof of your
vehicle, the permissible axle weights and
the permissible total weight of your vehi­ cle¢
page 314, Weights.
CD Note
Make sure that the opened rear lid does
not come in contact with the cargo on the
roof.
@ For the sake of the environment
As a resu lt of the increased wind resist­
ance created by a roof rack, your vehicle is
using fuel unnecessarily. So remove the
roof rack after using it.
Cupholder
Front cupholders
The cupholders are located in the center arm­
rest.

A maximum of two beverages can be accom­
modated in the center armrest. The second
beverage holder is located under a cover.
A WARNING
Spilled hot liquid can cause an accident
and personal injury.
- Never carry any beverage containers with
hot liquids, such as hot coffee or hot tea,

in the vehicle while it is moving . In case
of an acc ident, sudden braking or other
vehicle movement, hot liquid could spill,
causing scalding burns. Spilled hot liquid
can also cause an accident and personal injury.
- Use only soft cups in the cupholder. Hard cups and glasses can cause injury in an
accident.
CD Note
Only drink containers with lids should be
carried in the cupholder. liquid could spill
out and damage your vehicle's electron ic
equipment or stain the upholstery, etc.

The cupholder is located in the center con­
sole.

The holder @adjusts to the beverage holder.
T he cupholder is designed to hold no more
than two cups or cans.
A WARNING

hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's view. The coat hooks are designed
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang any clothing with hard, pointed or heavy
objects in the pockets on the coat hooks .
Dur ing sudden braking or in an a ccident -
especi ally if the airbag is deployed -
these objects could injure a ny passe n­
gers inside the vehicle.

To open glove compartment

To close glove compartment
• Push the glove compartment lid up until
the lock engages.
In the g love compartment lid you wi ll find a
p lace to store a pen and a pad of paper .
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury in an
accident or sudden stop, a lways keep the
glove compartment closed wh ile driving.

Should you not be ab le to open the glove
compartment as described, make sure the
valet key function is not activated

Cooling box in glove compartment
The cooling box works only when the air-con­
ditioning is in cooling mode.

• Insert the tongue into the correct buckle of
your seat until you hear it latch securely

• Pull on the belt to make sure that it is se­
curely latched in the buckle.
A WARNING
Improperly positioned safety belts can
cause serious personal injury in an acci­
dent.
- Expectant mothers must always wear the
lap portion of the safety belt as low as
possible across the pelv is and be low the
rounding of the abdomen.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS and

Unfastening safety belt s
Unbuckle the safety belt with the red release
button only after the vehicle has stopped.

• Let the belt wind up on the retractor as you
guide the belt tongue to its stowed position.
On vehicles with
third row seat* : an unfas­
tened safety belt can be secured in the retain­
ing clip in the luggage compartment side
tr im. In this way, the luggage compartment
cover can be removed without obstruction. Al­
so, the belt tongue height can be adjusted so
that luggage compartment can be loaded
without obstruction with the backrest folded
forward.
A WARNING
-Never unfasten safety belt while the vehi-
cle is mov ing. Do ing so will increase your
risk of being injured or killed.
Adjusting safety belt height
With the aid of the safety belt height adjust­
ment, the three point safety belt strap rout­
ing can be fitted to the shoulder area, accord­
ing to body size.

With the front seats, the height adjust­
ment of the seat can also be used to adjust
the position of the safety belts.

-Improper repair or disassembly of the
front passenger and driver seat will pre­
vent the Advanced Airbag System from
functioning properly .
- Repairs to the front passenger seat must
be performed by qualified and properly
trained workshop personnel.
- Never remove the front passenger or
dr iver seat from the veh icle .
- Never remove the upholstery from the
front passenger seat .
- Never disassemble or remove parts from
the seat or disconnect wires from it.
- Never carry sharp objects in your pockets
or place them on the seat. If the weight­
sensing mat in the passenger seat is
punctured it cannot work properly.
- Never carry things on your lap or carry
objects on the passenger seat . Such
items can increase the weight registered
by the weight-sens ing mat and send the
wrong info rmation to the airbag control
unit.
- Never store items under the front pas­
senger seat. Parts of the Advanced Ai r­
bag System under the passenger seat
cou ld be damaged, preventing them and
the airbag system from working proper ­
ly .
- Never place seat covers or replacement
upholstery that have not been specifical­
ly approved by A udi on the front seats.
- Seat covers can prevent the Advanced
Airbag System from recognizing child re­
straints or occupants on the front pas­
senger seat and prevent the side airbag in the seat backrest from deploy ing prop­
erly.
- Never use cush ions, pillows, blankets or
similar items on the front passenger
seat . The add itional padd ing will prevent
the weight-sens ing mat in the seat from
accu rately reg iste ring the ch ild restra int
or person on the seat and prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from function­ ing properly .
-If you must use a child restra int on the
front passenger seat and the chi ld re-

straint manufacturer's instructions re­
quire the use of a towel, foam cushion or
something e lse to properly position the
child restraint, make certain that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OF F light comes
on and stays on whenever the ch ild re­
straint is installed on the front passen­
ger seat.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, immed i­
ately insta ll child rest raint in a rear seat­
ing position and have the airbag system
inspected by your authorized Audi dealer .
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
The front Advanced Airbag System and the
s ide airbags supp lement the protection of­
fered by the front three-point safety belts
with pretensioners and load limiters and the
adjustable head rest raints to help reduce the
risk of inj ury in a wide range of accident and
c rash situations. Be s ure to read the impor­
tant information about safety and heed the
WARNINGS in this chapter.
Deployment of the Adv a need A irbag System
and the activation of the safety belt preten­
sioners depend on the deceleration measured
by the crash sensors and registered by the
electronic control unit. Crash severity depends
on speed and deceleration as we ll as the mass
and stiffness of the veh icle or object involved
in the crash .
When the e lectronic control unit registers a
low severity crash and the safety belt is being
used, the airbag will not deploy. If the safety
belt is not being used, the first stage deploys,
followed by the second stage after a much lat­ er t ime in the crash sequence.
If the electron ic control unit registers a crash
of medium severity , the first stage of the air ­
bag deploys followed by the second stage at a
much later time in the crash sequence -re­
gardless of whether the safety belt is be ing
u sed or not . In higher sever ity crashes as reg­
iste red by the electronic control unit, both the

-the safety be lt is being properly worn and
that there is not a lot of slack in the safety
belt webbing,
- accessory seat covers or cushions or other
t h ings that may cause an incorrect reading
or impression on the weight-sensing mat
under the upholstery of the seat have been
removed from the front passenger seat,
- a safety belt extender has not been left in
the safety belt latch for the front passenger
seat.
In addition to the
PASSENG ER AIR BA G OFF
light in the center of the instrument panel,
the message
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF or
PA SS ENGER AIR BA G ON will briefly appear
in the instrument cluste r display . T his is to in­
form the drive r of the current front passenger
a ir bag status.
Important safety instructions on
monitoring the Advanced Airbag System
A WARNING
An airbag system that is not funct ioning
prope rly cannot provide supplemental pro­
tect ion in a frontal crash.
- If the airbag indicato r light comes on, it
means that the re may be someth ing
wrong with the Advanced A irbag System.
It is possible that the airbag will inflate
when it is not supposed to, or w ill not in­
flate when it should.
- Have the airbag system inspected imme­
diately by your author ized Audi dealer .
A WARNING
If the front airbag inflates, a ch ild witho ut
a child restra int, or in a rearward-facing
child safety seat, or in a forward -facing
child restraint that has not been properly
installed will be seriously injured and can
be killed.
- Even though your veh icle is equipped
with an Advanced Airbag System, make
certain that a ll children , especially 12
years and younge r, a lways ride on the back seat properly
restrained for their
age and size.
- Always install forward o r rear-facing
child safety seats on the rear seat -even
with an Advanced A irbag System.
- If you must install a rearward-facing
child safety seat on the front passenger
seat because of exceptiona l circumstan­
ces and the
PASS ENG ER AIR BAG OFF
light does not appea r and stay on, imme­
diate ly install the rear-facing child safety
seat in a rear seat ing pos ition and have
the airbag system inspe cted by your au­
thori zed A udi dealer.
- A tight tether or other s trap on a rea r­
ward-facing child restraint att ached to
the front passenger seat can p ut too
m uch p ressure on the weight-sensing
mat in the seat and registe r more weight
than is actually on the seat. The heavier
weight registered can make the system
work as though an adult were on the seat
and deploy the Advanced Airbag when it
must be suppressed causing ser ious or
even fata l injury to t he ch ild.
- If, i n exceptiona l circumstances, you
m ust ins tall a forward-fac ing ch ild re­
straint o n the front passenger seat, al­
ways move the sea t in to its rearmos t po­
sition in the seat's fore and aft adjust­
ment range, as fa r away from the airbag
as possible. The backrest must be adjust­
ed to an upright pos ition. Make sure that
the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
comes on and stays on all the time when­
ever the ignit ion is switched on.
A WARNING
--
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not go out when an ad ult is sitting
on the front passenger seat after taking
the steps descr ibed above, make su re the
ad ult is properly seated a nd restra ined at
one o f the rea r seat ing pos itions.
- Have the airbag system inspected by
your author ized Audi dealer befo re tr ans­
port ing anyone on the front passenger
seat.

than 20 lbs. (9 kg) up to 40 lbs. (18 kg) must
always be properly restrained in a child safety
seat certified for their size and weight

The airbag on the passenger side makes the
front seat a potentially dangerous place for a
child to ride. The front seat is not the safest
place for a child in a forward-facing child safe­
ty seat.
It is a very dangerous place for an in­
fant or a larger child in a rearward -facing seat .
.,&. WARNING
Not using a child safety seat, using the
wrong child safety seat or improperly in­
stalling a child restraint increases the risk
of serious personal injury and death in a
collision or other emergency situation.
- Children on the front seat of any car,
even with Advanced Airbags, can be seri­
ously injured or even killed when an air­
bag inflates. A child in a rearward-facing
child safety seat installed on the front
passenger seat will be seriously injured
and can be killed if the front airbag in­
flates -even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child
safety seat or infant carrier with great
force and will smash the child safety seat
and child against the backrest, center
armrest, door or roof.
- Always install rear-facing child safety
seats on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward facing
child safety seat on the front passenger
seat because of exceptional circumstan­
ces and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on and stay on, im­
mediately install the rear-facing child
safety seat in a rear seating position and
have the airbag system inspected by your
Audi dealer.
- The rear side of the child safety seat
should be positioned as close as possible
to the backrest on the vehicle seat. Ad­
just or remove the rear seat head re­ straint if it is difficult to install the child

seat with the head restraint in place

If exceptional circumstances require the
use of a forward-facing child restraint on
the front passenger's seat, the child's safe­
ty and well-being require that the follow­
ing special precautions be taken:
- Make sure the forward-facing seat has
been designed and certified by its manu­
facturer for use on a front seat with a
passenger front and side airbag .
-Always follow the manufacturer's in­
structions provided with the child safety
seat or infant carrier .
- Always move the front passenger seat in­
to the rearmost position of the passen­
ger seat's fore and aft adjustment range,
and as far away from the airbag as possi­
ble before installing the child restraint.
- Always make sure that nothing prevents
the front passenger's seat from being
moved to the rearmost position in its
fore and aft adjustment range.
- Always make sure the backrest is in an
upright position.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the
time whenever the ignition is switched on.
- If the light does not stay on, perform the
checks

- Take the child restraint off the front pas-
