push-on connectors attached to adjustable
straps.
In addition to the LATCH lower anchorages , these
child restraint systems usually require the use of
tether straps to help keep the child restraint
firmly in place.
A WARNING
Improper installation of child restraints will
increase the risk of injury and death in a
crash.
- Always follow the instructions provided by
the manufacturer of the child restraint you intend to install in your vehicle.
- Never install a child restraint without a
properly attached top tether strap if the
child restraint manufacturer's instructions
require the top tether strap to be used.
- Improper use of child restraint LATCH lower
anchorage points can lead to injury in a colli
sion . The LATCH lower anchorage points are
designed to withstand only those loads im
posed by correctly fitted child restraints.
- Never mount two child restraint systems on
one LATCH lower anchorage point.
- Never secure or attach any luggage or other
item to the LATCH lower anchorages.

h ook locations
The tether anchors for the rear seating positions
are located on the backside of the rear seatbacks .
A tether is a straight or V-shaped strap that at
t aches the top part of a child restraint to special
anchorage points in the vehicle .
The purpose of the tether is to reduce the for
ward movement of the child restraint in a crash, in order to help reduce the risk of head injury
t ha t could be caused by striking the vehicle inte
rior .
Forward facing child restraints manufactured af
ter September 1, 1999, are required by U .S. fed
eral regulations to comply with new child head
movement performance requirements . These
new performance requirements make a tether
necessary on most new child safety seats .
_& WARNING
Improper installation of child restraints will
increase the r isk of injury and death in a
crash.
308
- Always follow the instructions provided by
the manufacturer of the child restraint you
intend to install in your Audi.
- Improper use of child restraint anchors (in
cluding tether anchors) can lead to injury in
a collision. The anchors are designed to
withstand only those loads imposed by cor rectly fitted child restraints.
- Never mount two child restraint systems on
one LATCH lower anchor point.
- Never attach two child restraint systems to
one tether strap or tether anchorage .
- Never attach a tether strap to a tie-down
hook in the luggage compartment .
- Never use child restraint tether anchorages
to secure safety belts or other kinds of occu pant restraints .
- Never secure or attach any luggage or other
items to the LATCH lower anchorages or to
the tether anchors .

Installing th e te th er str ap
.,. Release o r deploy the tether st rap on the child
restraint according to the child restraint manu
facturer's instructions .
.,. Guide the upper tether strap
under the rear
head restraint and into the rear cargo area
(raise the head restraint if necessary). For chi ld
restra ints w ith V-tether straps, always make
sure that the head restraint guide rods do not
interfere with any part of the top tether strap.
.,. Slide the tether st rap hook over the anchor
bracket.
.,. Pull on t he tether strap hook so t hat the spr ing
catch of t he hook engages.
.,. Tighten the tether strap firmly fo llowing the
child restraint man ufacturer's instructions .
Releasing the tether strap
.,. Loosen the tens ion following the ch ild rest raint
manufacturer's instructions .
.,. Depress the spring catch on the hook and re
l ease it from the anchorage.
@ Note
If you leave the ch ild restrain t with t he tether
strap firm ly installed for severa l days, this
cou ld leave a mark on the upholstery on the
seat cush ion and backrest in the area where
the tet her strap was installed. The upholstery
wou ld also be permanently stretched around
the tether strap. This applies especially to
leather seats.
Using tether straps on rearward-facing
child restraints
Current ly, few rear -facing chi ld restraint systems
come with a tether. Please read and heed the
chi ld restraint system manufacturer's instruc
tions carefully to determine how to properly in
stall the tether.
A WARNING
A child in a rearward-faci ng chi ld safety sea t
installed o n the fro nt passenge r seat w ill be
ser ious ly injured and can be killed if the front
airbag inflates -even wi th an Advanced Air
bag System.
Ch ild saf ety
- The inflating airbag will hit the c hild safety
seat or infant carr ier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child
aga inst the backrest, center armrest, or
door .
- If you must install a rearward facing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be
cause of exceptional circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light does not

Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oi l
look dark after the engine has been running for a
short t ime. Th is is norma l and is not a reason to
change the oil more often than recommended.
Because of the prob lem of p roper disposa l, along
with the special tools and necessary expertise re
qu ired, we strongly recommend that you have
your oil changed by an authorized
Audi dealer or
a qualified service station .
If you choo se to change your oil your self , please
note the following important information:
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury if you
must change the engine oil in your veh icle
yourself:
- Wear eye protection.
- To reduce the risk of burns from hot engine
o il, let the eng ine cool down to the touch.
-
- When removing the oi l drain plug with your
fingers, stay as far away as poss ible. A lways
keep your forearm paralle l to the ground to
help prevent hot oi l from running down your
arm.
- Drain the oil into a container des igned for
this purpose, one large enough to hold at least the total amount of oil in your eng ine .
- Engine oil is poisonous. Keep it well out of
the reach of chi ldren .
- Cont inuous contact w ith used engine oil is
harmful to yo ur sk in. A lways protect your
sk in by washing o il off thoroug hly w ith soap
and water.
@ Note
Never mix o il add it ives wit h your engine o il.
These additives ca n damage your eng ine and
adversely affect your Aud i Lim ited New Veh i
cle Warranty.
@ For the sake of the environment
- Before changing your oil, f irst make sure
you know w here yo u can properly dispose of
the used oil.
- Always dispose of used engine oil properly. Do not dump it on garden soi l, wooded

areas, into open streams or down sewage
drains.
- Recycle used engine o il by ta king it to a used
engine oi l collection facility in yo ur a rea, or
contact a service station.

If you must add coolant, use a mixture of water
and coolant additive . Mix ing the coo lant add itive
with dist illed wate r is recommended.
Coolant additive
The coolant additive is made of anti-freezing and

Tire wear
Check the tires regularly for wear.
-Inflation pressure that is too low or high can increase tire wear
considerably.
-Driving quickly through curves, rapid acceleration and heavy
braking increase tire wear.
-Have an authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili-
"

Wheels
ty check the wheel alignment if
there is unusual wear.
-Have the wheels rebalanced if an imbalance is causing noticeable
vibration in the steering wheel. If you do not, the tires and other
vehicle components could wear more quickly.
Treadwear indicator
Original equipment tires contain
treadwear indicators in the tread
pattern, which are bars that are 1/16 in (1.6 mm) high and are
spaced evenly around the tire per pendicular to the running direc
tion ¢
fig. 2 70. The letters "TWI"

Tire rotation
Rotating the tires regularly is rec
