Start/Stop system
Description
Applies to: vehicles wi th Start/Stop syste m
The Start/Stop system can help increase fue l
economy and reduce CO
2 emissions.
In Sta rt/S to p mode, the eng ine shuts o ff au to
matically when stop ped, fo r example at a t raff ic
li ght . The ignition and importa nt assist systems
s uch as power steering and the brake booste r will

remain avai lable during the "stop" phase . The en
gine will restart automatica lly when needed.
The Start/Stop system is automatically activated
as soon as the ignit ion is switched on .
Basic requirements
- The driver's door and hood must be closed .
- The "P", "N" or "D" selector lever posit ion must
be engaged .
- The steering wheel must not be sharp ly turned.
- The vehicle must have driven faster than 2 mph
(3 km/h) s ince the last time it stopped.
- A trailer must not be hitched to the vehicle .

brake pedal. For examp le, if yo u on ly lightly
press on the b rake peda l in stop -and -go
t raffic or when turning, the engine w ill not
switch off when the vehicle is stat ionary. As
soo n as yo u press the brake down harder,

to keep the vehicle from rolling .
Starting/stopping the engine automat

The sys tem chec ks if cer tain condit ions a re me t
before and d uring the "stop" p hase, and dete r
mines if and how long the engine is stopped de
pending on the situation. For example, if power
u sage is high, the eng ine will not be stopped.
Along with other conditions, the following fac
tors influence the automatic engine start or stop:
- Environmental conditions (slopes, inclines, ele-
vation, temperat ure)
- Battery (cha rge status, temperature, powe r us -
age)
- Engine temperature
- Assistance systems
- Dr iv ing behav ior
If the
rjj ind icator light appears in the instru
ment cluster d isplay, the engi ne w ill not be stop
ped .
Switching the ignition off automatically

If you leave the veh icle dur ing a "stop" phase, the
engine can be res tarted w ithin approximate ly 30
seconds if the doors are closed, the driver's safe
ty be lt is fastened and the brake pedal is pressed.
If you leave the veh icle longer than 30 seconds,
t h e ign it io n will sw itch o ff automa tica lly to pre
vent the vehicle battery from draining. If t his is
the case, the message

- After dr iv ing offroad, remove branches and
other debris from the radiator gri lle, under
body, and whee ls. Look especia lly for foreign
obj ects (such as stones) that may be stuck in
the tire tread.
- Clean th e ve hicle body and underbody and in
spect the vehicle for possib le damage.
- Clean t he windows, headlights, tail lights and
the license plate if they are dirty.
- Perform a brake test (especia lly after driving
through water) .
A WARNING
-Be especia lly cautious and aware when driv
ing under d ifficult conditions and when off
road. Vehicle damage and injuries may occur
when driving at excessively high speeds or
with incorrect dr iv ing ma neuvers .
- Always adjust your speed and driving style
to the roads, terra in, traffic and weather
cond it ions. Dr ive espec ially slowly if there is
low v is ib ility when offroad.
- Please note that the wheels can spin more
and the vehicle can swerve when in off road
mode, especially whe n the road is s lippery

A rising diffe re nce in al titude (i ncline) on a 109
yard ( 100 m) stretch is given in pe rcentage or de
grees . Data indicating whet her the vehicle can
drive up an incline by itse lf (dependent on the
road surface and the engine power among other
factors). Maximum permitted incline angle: 31
°

The distance between the road surface and the
l owest point on the vehicle underbody.

ance: 8.3 in (210 mm)

If you sw itch the engine off w hen the "N" selector
l ever pos ition is se lected, the transmission re
mains in "N" for app rox ima tely 30 minutes and
then "P " is engaged.
You cannot select the "N" pos ition w hen the ign i
tion is sw itched off . W hen d riving through an au
tomatic ca r wash, first select the "N" posi tion and
then tur n t he eng ine off.
For safety reasons, the vehicle ca nnot be locked
when the transm ission is in the
"N" pos it ion.
D IS -Dri ving forward
When the transmission is in the "D/S" posit ion, it
can be operated either in the normal "D" mode or
in the "S " sport mode . Move the selector lever
back to engage the "S" spo rt mode . You can only
se lect the "S" selector lever position when the "D"
or "E " posit ion is selected. To select the "D" or " E"
posi tion again w hen "S " is engaged , move the se
l ector lever back ¢& . T o shift from "N" to "D"
when traveling at speeds below 1 mph (2 km/h), press the brake pedal and s hift into the "D" posi

is set . If it is not functioning, secure the ve

front and a rear wheel. An unsecured vehicle
may roll away, which increases the risk of an
accident.
- To reduce the r isk of an accident, you must
not drive when the emergency release is ac
tivated .

tions, you can raise the vehicle again after hitch
ing the trai ler or after adjust ing the tongue
weight .

Driving with a trailer
Driving with a trailer requires extra caution.
Speed
Adhere to the legal speed l imi ts. Follow t he lega l
regulations specif ic to the country.
As the speed inc reases, the d riving stability of
the t railer dec reases . The refore you sho uld not
exceed t he max imum legal speed limit when
there are unfavorable road, weather and/or wind
conditions. This especially applies when driving
downhill.
You must a lways reduce yo ur speed as soon as
you not ice even the s lightest swinging motion of
the trailer . Never try to "straighten out" the trail
er by accelerating.
The weig ht dis trib ution is very poo r if t he ve hicle
is empty and the trailer is loaded. However if you
must drive under these circumstances, t hen drive
especia lly slowly.

Assistance systems Speed warning system
Description
App lies to: vehicles with speed warning system
The speed warning system helps you to stay be
low a specified maximum speed that can be set,
changed or deleted in the Infotainment system .
The speed warning system warns you if you are
exceeding the maximum speed that you have set .
A warning tone will sound as soon as your speed
exceeds the stored value slightly . The indicator
l ight also turns on in the instr ument cluster d is
p lav
[0] (USA models)/ [81 (Ca nada models) and
a message. The indica tor l igh t
[0]/ [OJ and the
message turn off if the speed fa lls back be low
the stored maximum speed.
Sett ing a threshold is recommended if you would
like to be reminded when yo u reach a certa in
maximum speed . Situations where you may want
to do so include driving in a country with a gener
al speed lim it or if there is a specified maximum
speed for winter tires.

hy droplani ng), bec ause this in cr eases the
risk of an acciden t.

when dr iv in g in turning lanes, highway exits
or in construction zones.

Before driving downhill a long distance on a
steep hill, decrease you r speed and select a
lower gear. This makes use of the eng ine
brak ing effect and re lieves the bra kes.

Changing the speed

Overriding the speed

You can p ress t he accelerator pedal to inc rease
your speed, for examp le if you want to pass
someo ne. The speed yo u se t earlier w ill res ume
as soon as yo u release the accelerator peda l.
H oweve r, if you are exceeding the stored speed
by a cons ider able amo unt for a long time , the
cr uise con trol sys tem w ill tempo rar ily switch off.
