In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itical for a lane change even if it is still some­
what far away. The faste r a vehicle approaches,
the soo ner t he d isplay in the exter io r mirro r will
t ur n on.

Veh icles traveling w ith you are indicated in the
exte rior m irror if they are classified as cr itical for
a lane change. All ve hicl es detected by side assist

are indicated by the time they enter your "blind
spot", at the latest .
© Vehicles left behind
If you slow ly pass a veh icle that side assist has
de tected (the difference in speed be tween the ve­
hi cle and your ve hicl e is less than 9 mph o r 1S
km/h), the display in the exterior mirror turns on
as soon as the vehicle enters yo ur blind spot.
T he disp lay will not t urn on if you quickly p ass a
vehicle that side ass ist has de te cted (the differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and your vehi­
cle is greater than 9 mph or 1S km/h).
Functional limitations
The radar senso rs are des igned to detect the left
and rig ht adjacent lanes when the road lanes a re
the norma l width . In some si tua tions, the display
in the exterior mirror may turn on even though
there is no vehicle located in the area that is criti­
ca l for a lane change. For example:
- If the lanes are nar row o r if your are driving on
the edge of your lane. If t his is t he case, the
system may have detected the vehicle in anoth­
er lane that is
not adjacent to yo ur current lane.
- If you are driving t hro ugh a curve. S ide assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over from
the adjacent lane.
- If side assist reacts to other objects (s uch as
high or disp laced guard rails) .
- In poor weather conditions . The side assist
functions are limited.

spot if your vehicle is traveling at least
19 mph (30 km/h).
- In certain situations, the system may not
work or its function may be limited. For ex­
ample:
- The display may not turn on at the right
time if vehicles are approaching or passing
very quickly.
- In poor weather conditions, such as heavy rain, snow or fog.
- In very wide lanes, in tight curves or when
there are slopes in the roadway, vehicles in
the neighboring lanes may not be detect­
ed because they are outside of the sensor
range .

The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
underbody. This can affect the system. Have
an authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility check their function .

-If the window glass in the driver's door or
front passenger's door has been tinted, the

terpreted.

Assist
Switching on and off

With Off, the system is switched off.
An activated system will signal every time the ig­ nition is switched on by turning the displays in
the exterior mirrors on briefly.
Adjusting the display brightness

The display brightness can be adjusted in the

The display brightness adjusts automatically to
the brightness of the surroundings, both in the
information and in the warning stage. In very
dark or very bright surroundings, the display is al­
ready set to the minimum or maximum level by
the automatic adjustment. In such cases, you
may notice no change when adjusting the bright­
ness, or the change may only be noticeable once
the surroundings change.
Adjust the brightness to a level where the display
in the information stage will not disrupt your
view forward. If you change the brightness, the
display in the exterior mirror will briefly show the
brightness level in the information stage . The
brightness of the warning stage is linked to the
brightness in the information stage and is adjust­
ed along with the information stage adjustment .
(D Tips
-Side assist is not active while you are mak­
ing the adjustment.
- Your settings are automatically stored and assigned to the remote control key being
used.

Audi drive select (drive
settings)
Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
Audi drive select makes it possible to experience
different types of vehicle settings in one vehicle.
The driver can select from three
Comfort, Auto
and Dynamic modes using the ~.7l.'i button in the
center console or the MMI to switch between a
sporty and a comfortable driving mode, for ex­
ample . In the
individual* mode, the settings can
be adjusted to your personal preferences . This
makes it possib le to combine settings such as a
sporty engine tun ing with light steering .

Using Audi drive select incorrect ly can lead to
collisions, other accidents and serious inju ­
ries.

The vehicle setup in each mode depends on the
vehicle's features. However , the eng ine and steer­
ing are always affected.
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode, the engine and auto­
matic transmission* respond more qu ickly or in a
more balanced manner to accelerator peda l
movements .
Adaptive dampers (Audi magnetic ride)*
The adaptive dampers use sensors to record in ­
format ion regarding steer ing movements, brak­
ing and acce lerat ion operations by the driver,
road surface, dr iv ing speed, and load. With Audi
drive select you can adjust the adaptive dampers
sporty (dynamic), comfortable (comfort) or bal­
anced (auto).
Steering
T he steer ing adapts in terms of steer ing ass is­
tance. There a re diffe rent modes

Indirect steering that moves easily as in comfort
mode is especia lly suited to long drives on a high ­
way. The dynamic mode provides sporty, direct
steering .
For vehicles with progressive steering* the steer­
ing performance is more agi le .
Cornering light*
The cornering light adjusts when driv ing on
curves at speeds between 6 mph (10 km/h) and
68 mph (110 km/h). The pivoting action and the
lig hting are also adapted to the mode.
Adaptive cruise control*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortable to sporty, depending on the
Audi drive select mode. Adaptive cruise control
also responds to the driving behavior of the vehi­
cle ahead in a more conservative or sporty man­
ner.

Depending on your vehicle's equipment, various
parking aids will help you when parking and ma­
neuvering.
The
rear parking system is an audible parking aid
that warns you of obstacles
behind the vehicle

in front of and behind the vehicle

The rearview camera shows the area behind the
vehicle in the MMI display. This display assists
you when you are cross or parallel parking. The

A WARNING ,--
- Always look for traffic and check the area
around your vehicle by looking at it directly
as well. The parking system cannot replace
the driver's attention. The driver is a lways
responsible when entering or leaving a park­
ing space and during similar maneuvers .
- Please note that some surfaces, such as
clothing, are not detected by the system.
- Sensors and cameras have blind spots in
which people and objects cannot be detect­
ed . Be especially cautious of small children
and animals .
- Always pay attention to the area around the
vehicle - using the rearview mirror, too.
- The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the radiator grille, bumper,
wheel housing and the underbody . The park­
ing system may become impaired as a re­
sult . Have an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility check their
function.
- Make sure the sensors are not obstructed by
st ickers, deposits or other materials.
If they
are the sensor function could be impaired .

- Some objects are not detected or displayed
by the system under certain circumstances:
- Objects such as barrier chains, trailer draw
bars, vertical poles or fences
- Objects above the sensors such as wall ex­
tensions
- Objects with specific surfaces or struc­
tures such as chain link fences or powder
snow
- If you continue driving closer to a low-lying
object, it may disappear from the sensor
range. Note that you will no longer be
warned about this obstacle.
- The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the radiator grille, bumper,
wheel housing and the underbody. The park­
ing system may become impaired as a re­
sult. Have an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility check their
function.

- The system may provide a warning even
though there are no obstacles in the cover­
age area in some situations, such as:
- certain road surfaces or for long grass .
- external ultrasonic sources e.g. from
cleaning vehicles.
- heavy rain, snow, or thick vehicle exhaust.
- We recommend that you practice parking in
a traffic-free location or parking lot to be­
come familiar with the system. When doing
this, there should be good light and weather
conditions.
- You can change the volume and pitch of the
signals as well as the display¢

-What appears in the MMI display is some­
what time-delayed.
- The sensors must be kept clean and free of
snow and ice for the park assist to operate .

Description

The rear parking system is an audible parking
aid.

There is a sensor in the rear bumper cover. If
these detect an obstacle, audible signals warn
you .
Make sure the sensors are not covered by stick­
ers, deposits or any other obstructions as it may
impair the sensor function. For information on
cleaning, refer to

The range at which the sensors begin to measure
is approximately:

The closer you get to the obstacle, the shorter

is not different from a two wheel drive vehi­
cle. Do not be tempted to accelerate to a
high speed when the road is slippery th is in­
creases the r isk of an accident.
- Note that on wet streets, the front wheels
can "hydrop lane" if driving at speeds that
are too high . Unlike front whee l drive
vehicles, the engi ne does not rev higher sud­
denly when the vehicl e begins hyd rop laning.
Fo r th is r easo n, pay a ttent ion to the road
co ndi tions regardless of your speed.
Energy management
The starting ability is optimized
The en ergy management system manages the
electrical energy distribution and optimizes the
availability of electrical energy for starting the
engine.
When a ve hicle with a co nventional energy sys­
tem is not driven for a long time, the battery is
drained by equipment (for example the immobil­
izer) . In certa in circumstances , there cou ld may
not be eno ugh energy to start the engine .
Your vehicle is equipped w it h an intelligent ener­
gy management system for distr ibut ing electric i­
ty . T his sign ificantly improves the starting ability
and inc reases the battery life .
The energy management system Is made up of
battery diagnos is , idling cu rrent management
and dynamic energy management.
Battery diagnosis
The batte ry diagnosis determines the batte ry
charge leve l. The sensors determine the batte ry
voltage, the battery current , and the battery
t emperature . The current cha rge level and the
pe rformance of t he battery a re dete rmined based
on this .
Idling current management
The idling cu rrent management decreases the
energy used while parked. W it h the engine
sw itched off, it manages the energy d istribution
to the different electrical components . Date from
battery diagnosis is taken into account for this .

Depend ing on the ba tte ry charge leve l, electrical
equipment is switched off one item after the oth­
er, to prevent the battery from dra ining and to
retain the start ing ability.
Dynamic energy management
While driv ing, dynam ic ene rgy management dis­
tribu tes the appropriate amount o f energy to the
e lectrica l equ ipment. It control s the battery
charge level so that more ene rgy is not used then
i s be ing generated in order to maintain an opti­
mal battery charge level.

What you should know
Maintaining the starting ability is the highest
priority.
A lot of st ress is placed on the battery when dr iv ­
ing sho rt distances, in traffic, and at cold t imes
of the year. A lot of energy is used but little is
generated.
It is also critical when the engine is
not ru nning but e lectr ica l equipment is sw itched
o n. In th is case, energy is used but none is gener ­
ated.
In sit uat ions like this, e nergy ma nagement w ill
active ly regu lated the distribution of energy .
Long periods without use
If you do not drive your vehicle for several days or
weeks, e lectr ica l cons umers are grad ually scaled
back or sw itched off. This reduces energy use and
ensures the ve hicle w ill be able to start after long
per iods of time . Some conven ience functions
suc h as opening w it h the remote co ntrol key may
not be available. These conve nience f unct ions
will be ava ila ble aga in once you swi tch the igni-
tion on and st art the eng ine . .,_

Safety belts
Adjusting safety belt height
With the aid of the safety belt height adjust­
ment, the three point safety belt strap routing
can be fitted to the shoulder area, according to
body size.

when they are correctly positioned on the body.

death when an airbag deploys and strikes an oc­
cupant who is not in the correct seating position.
A driver is responsible for the safety of all vehicle
occupants and especially for ch ildren . Therefore:

ting posit ion in the vehicle while traveling

Belt tensioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear -end collisions above a
particular severity and in a rollover, safety belts are tensioned automatically.
R ev ersib le safety belt t ensione rs
The safety belts on the front seats are equipped
with power reversib le tensioners. The fo llow ing
functions are availab le when the driver's/front
passenger's safety belts are fastened:
- Automatic tensio ners: at the start of a drive,
the safety belts automat ica lly adjust to the
passenger after a certain t ime period or vehicle
speed.
- In certain driving situations, the safety belts
may tighten with a reversible tensioning func­
tion

-The safety belts may a lso tighten with this re-
vers ible tensioning function in minor collisions.
Pyrotechn ic safet y belt pretens ioner s
The safety belts are equipped with safety belt

A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing child seat instal ­
led on the front passenger seat wi ll be seri ­
ously injured and can be killed if the front air­
bag inflates -even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
-Although the Advanced Airbag System in
your vehicle is designed to turn off the front
airbag when a rearward-facing child re­
straint has been installed on the front pas­ senger seat, nobody can absolutely guaran­
tee that deployment is impossible in all con­
c eivable s ituations that may happen dur ing
the useful life o f you r vehicle.
- The inflating a irbag w ill hit the child seat or
infant carrier w ith great force an d will
smash the ch ild seat and child agains t the
backrest, center armrest, doo r, or roo f.
- Alw ays install rearward- facing child re­
straints on the rear seat .
- If you must i nst all a rearw ard facing child
sea t on the front passenger sea t beca use of
excep tional circ umstances and the
PASSEN­
GER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on
and stay on, immediately install the rear­
facing child seat in a rear seating position
and have the a irbag system inspected by
your Audi dealer.
A WARNING
If, in exceptional c ircumstances, you must in­
stall a forward-facing ch ild restraint on the
front passenge r's seat:
-Always make sure the forward-fac ing seat
has be en designed and certified by its man­
ufact urer for use on a fro nt seat wit h a pas­
senger front and side airbag.
- Never put the forwa rd-facing child rest raint
up against or ve ry nea r the i nstr ument pan ­
el.
-Always move t he passenger seat into its
rearmost position in the seat 's fore and aft
adjus tment range, as far away from the air ­
bag as possib le, before installing the fo r­
ward-facing c hild restraint . The backrest
must be adjusted to an up right position .
-
Airbag syste m
- Always make sure that there is nothing on
the front passenger seat that w ill cause the
capacitive passenger detection system in
the seat to signal to the Airbag System that
the seat is occup ied by a person when it is
not, or to signal that it is occupied by some­
one who is heavier than the person actually
sitt ing on the se at. T he presen ce of add i­
tion al ob jects could cause t he passenger
front airbag to be tu rned on when it shou ld
be off, or co uld cause the ai rbag to wo rk in a
way that is different from the way it would
have worked without the ob ject on the seat.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OF F light comes on and stays on all the time
wheneve r the ignit ion is switched on.
Advanced Airbag System components
The front passenger seat in yo ur vehicle has a lot
of very impo rtant parts of the Advanced A irbag
System in it . T hese pa rts include the capacitive
passenge r detection system, wir ing, brackets,

parts of the Advanced A irbag System, yo u m ust
take care to prevent it from being damaged.
Damage to the seat may prevent the Advanced
Airbag System for the front passenger seat from
doing its job in a crash.
The front Advanced Airbag System consi sts
of the following:
- Crash sensors in the front of the vehicle that
measure vehicle acceleration/deceleration to
p rov ide i nfo rmat ion to the Advanced Airbag
System abo ut the sever ity o f the cr ash.
- An elect ron ic cont ro l unit, with integrated
cr ash senso rs for front and s ide imp acts. The
cont ro l uni t "dec ides" whet her to fire the fron t
airbags based on the info rmation received from
the crash sensors . The control unit a lso "de ­
cides" whether the safety belt pretens ione rs
