Speed and distance control system

Description
The Adaptive Cruise Control driver assistance program is
a combined speed and distance control system .

Any speed between about 20 mph (30 km/h) and about 95 mph (150
km/h) can be set and held with the Adaptive Cruise Control. The
system also helps keep a distance you previously selected to vehi ­
cles ahead of you.
Adaptive Cruise Control can help reduce driving stress and fatigue
by maintaining a preset speed with automatic braking and acce ler ­
ation. Driving can be more relaxed, particularly on long trips on
interstates or on other highways that are genera lly straight.
How does it work?
A lever on the steering wheel column operates the Adaptive Cruise
Control)=> page 141, "How is the speed stored?" and=> page 143,
"How is distance set?".

Important information is brought up in the speedometer and in the
instrument cluster display as the vehicle is being driven

What is important for you to know
There are limits to what Adaptive Cruise Control can do as the
vehicle is being
driven => page 149, "Special driving situations" .
LJ}. WARNING
Improper use of the Adaptive Cruise Control can cause collisions,
other accidents and serious personal injury.
• Never drive at speeds that are too high for traffic, road and
weather conditions.
• Never follow the vehicle in front so closely that you cannot stop
your vehicle safely. The Adaptive Cruise Control cannot brake the
vehicle safely when you follow another vehicle too closely. Always
remember that the Adaptive Cruise Control has a braking power
that is only about 25% of the vehicle's maximum braking ability,
the automatic braking function cannot bring the vehicle to a stop.
• Never use Adaptive Cruise Control on roads where you cannot
drive safely at a steady speed, including city or stop-and -go or
heavy traffic, on winding roads or when road conditions are poor
(for example , on ice, gravel , in fog , heavy rain or on wet roads that
increase the risk of hydroplaning).
• Always turn off Adaptive Cruise Control when entering turn
lanes , highway exit lanes and construction zones or similar situa­
tions because the vehicle will automatically accelerate to the
stored speed
• Never rest your foot on the accelerator pedal, especially when
the Adaptive Cruise Control is being used because doing so will
override the braking function and prevent the brakes from being _.,

The system al lows only speeds from 20 to 95 mph (30 to 150 km/h)
to be set. This speed range is faintly illuminated in the speedometer.

• ""c:::, Open road: The warning light ,,.,c:::, shows that Adaptive
Cruise Control is active and that no object is ahead of the vehicle . A
stored speed requested is maintained .
• c::::,11 .. c:::, Driving i n tr aff ic: The warning light c:::,11«c:::, indicates that
an object has been detected travel ing in front . Speed is adjus ted
according to the distance set. Adaptive Cruise Control accelerates
and brakes automatica lly.
• c:::,,, ,,c:::, Re quest f or driver t o assume control : The red flashing
warning light
c::::,11 .. c:::, means Reque st for driver to assume control .
You as the driver must slow the vehicle with the foot brake . The
symbo l
c::::,11,,c:::, tells you that the Adaptive Cruise Control is not able
to s low the vehic le down enough to keep a enough distance to the
vehicle in front o f you . A warning tone signal wi ll also sound when
the symbol appears.
[ i ] Tip s
• If the Adaptive Cruise Control initiates braking, the hydraulic
brake system is under pressure. Therefore, the brake pedal distance
is shorter and the peda l feels "harder" .
• I f you use the accelerator to go faster than the speed being main ­
tained by the Adaptive Cruise Control, the system will not warn of
situations that require override of the Adaptive Cruise Control. No
warning light will appear in the instrument cluster display and no gong wil l sound .•

Using the v isual representation of a vehicle, you can determine
whether the system is adjusting to an object traveling in fron t.
• With an open road without a vehicle trave ling ahead, only the
outline of the vehi cle is visible .
• A
gray vehicle will appear when a vehic le is de tec ted up ahead.
• If the situation is close to a reques t for the driver to assume
control, a
red vehicle is displayed.
If Adaptive Cruise Control is turned off or no speed is set, no vehicle
is shown.

this poin ter visual izes the distance to veh icles traveling ahead.
When approaching rapid ly, it serves as early warning of an
impending request for the dr iver to assume contro l. The po inter
moves on a scale from right to left .
Open road: With an open road and no vehicle trave ling ahead, no
pointer is shown .
Driving in traff ic: If a vehicle trave ling ahead is detected, the pointer
moves in the center area of the scale. This area represen ts the
distance set. It is marked
green to make it easier to see .
Request for driver to assume control: In critical situations t he
pointer moves into the
red area of the display. When the pointer
r eaches the farthe st left position, the request for the d river to
assume control is displayed. •

Parki ng mode
Two different parking modes are available for parking with the rear ­
view camera . The two different park ing modes are denotes as
" parking mode 1 " ~ page 175 and "parking mode Z' ~ page 176.

" Parking mode 1" => fig. 194, for examp le, can be used to park in a
parking space or a par king garage ::::>

"Parking mode 2" => fig. 195, for examp le , can be used to (parallel)
park on the side of the road

Orientation lines and marked surfaces
Orientation lines and colored marked surfaces(::::> page 175, fig . 198

pictures , subject to the two different parking modes . These orienta ­
t ion lines and surfaces offer aid when parking o r maneuvering. The
orientation lines and surfaces refer to the height of a leve l driving
surface .
When the indicated orientation lin es and indicated blue surfaces
superimpose vehicles or objects, at the latest , the respective
distance to the vehicles or objects has become too short

I f the trunk lid is open or if an e lectrica l connection to the trailer

surfaces are
not displayed.

Always make sure that the volume and frequency of the chimes is
adjusted so that you can easily hear the acoustic distance signal
even if the radio is playing, the air-conditioner blower is on High or
there is a high level of outside noise. Check the settings whenever
someone else has driven the vehicle before you. •

Select Graphic, Rear View, automatic or off.
The rear-view camera and the visual display can be used separately
or in combination for parking.
When you switch manually to the rear -view camera via the control
button with the
Rear View function ~ fig. 209, the control button
with the
Graphic function ~ page 177, fig. 201 appears. You can
switch back and forth between the rear-view camera and visual
parking assist at any time via the displayed control button function.
The presettings in the MMI are retained .
"Graphic" setting
If you have set the Graphic function, the visual display will be
displayed in the MMI display by default upon activation of the
parking assist system

"Rear View" setting
If you have set the Rear View function, the picture from the rear­
view
camera ~ page 175, fig. 199 will be displayed when driving
backward and forward whenever the parking assist system is acti­
vated.
"Automatic" setting
If you have set the automatic function, the picture from the rear ­
view camera will automatically be displayed when reverse gear is engaged and the visual display will be displayed on the MMI display
when you drive forward. _,,,
