Vour vehicle is
equippedwithafrontAdvanced
Airbag
Systemincompliancewith United
StatesFederalMotor VehicleSafetyStandard
208asapplicableatthetimeyourvehiclewas
manufactured.
ThefrontAdvanced AirbagSystemsupple­
mentsthesafetybeltstoprovideadditional
protectionforthedriver'sandfrontpasseng­
er'sheadsandupperbodiesinfrontalcrashes.
Theairbagsinflateonlyinfrontalimpacts
whenthevehicledecelerationishighenough.
ThefrontAdvanced AirbagSystemforthe
frontseatoccupantsisnotasubstitutefor
yoursafetybelts.Rather,itispartoftheover­
all
occupantrestraintsysteminyourvehicle.
Always
rememberthattheairbagsystemcan
only
helptoprotectyou, ifyouaresittingup­
right,
wearingyoursafetybeltandwearingit
properly. Thisiswhy you
andyourpassengers
mustalwaysbeproperlyrestrained,notjust
becausethelawrequires youtobe.
The Advanced Airbag
Systeminyourvehicle
hasbeencertifiedtomeetthe"lowrisk"re­
quirementsfor3and6year-old childrenon
thepassengersideandverysmalladultson
thedriverside.Thelowriskdeploymentcrite­
ria
areintendedtohelpreducetheriskofin­
jury
throughinteractionwiththefrontairbag
thatcan occur, forexample,bybeingtoo
closetothesteeringwheelandinstrument
panelwhentheairbaginflates.
Inaddition,thesystemhasbeencertifiedto
complywiththe"suppression"requirements
oftheSafetyStandard,toturnoffthefront
airbagforinfants12monthsoldandyounger
whoarerestrainedonthefrontpassenger
seatinchildrestraintsthatarelistedinthe
StandardQpage135,Childrestraintsand
AdvancedAirbags.
"Suppression"requiresthefrontairbagonthe
passengersidetobeturnedoffif:
- a child up
toaboutoneyearofageisre­
strainedonthefrontpassengerseatinone
oftherear-facingorforward-facinginfant
restraintslistedinFederalMotor Vehicle
SafetyStandard208withwhichtheAd­
vancedAirbagSysteminyourvehiclewas
certified.Foralistingofthechildrestraints
thatwereusedtocertifyyourvehicle's com­
pliancewiththeUSSafetyStandard

-weightlessthanathresholdlevelstoredin
thecontrolunitisdetectedonthefrontpas­
sengerseat.
Whenapersonisdetectedonthefrontpas­
sengerseat,weighingmorethanthetotal
weightofachildthatisabout1yearold re­
strainedinoneoftherear-facingorforward­
facinginfantrestraints(listedinFederal Mo-'--..torVehicleSafetyStandard208withwhich
theAdvanced AirbagSysteminyourvehicle
wascertified),thefrontairbagonthepassen­
gersidemayormaynotdeploy.
The PASSENGER
AIRBAGOFFlightcomeson
whentheelectroniccontrolunitdetectsato­
talweightonthefrontpassengerseatthatre­
quiresthefrontairbagtobeturnedoff.Ifthe
PASSENGERAIRBAGOFFlightdoesnot
comeon,thefrontairbagonthepassenger
sidehasnotbeenturnedoffbythecontrol
unitandcandeployifthecontrolunitsenses
animpactthatmeetstheconditionsstoredin
itsmemory.
Ifthetotalweightonthefrontpassenger
seatismorethanthatofatypical1year-old,~
br
butlessthantheweightofasmalladult,the
frontairbagonthepassengersidemaydeploy
(thePASSENGERAIRBAGOFFlightdoesnot
conneon).
Forexample,theairbagmaydeployif:

sengerseat
_ apassengerwhoisnotsittinguprightwith
their back
againstanon-reclinedbackrest
withtheirfeetonthevehiclefloorinfront
oftheseatisonthefrontpassengerseat.
Ifthefrontpassengerairbagdeploys,the
FederalStandardrequirestheairbagtomeet
the"low risk"deploymentcriteriatohelpre­
duce
theriskofinjurythroughinteraction
withtheairbag."Low risk"deploymentoccurs
inthosecrashesthattakeplaceatlowerde­
celerationsasdefinedintheelectroniccontrol
unitQpage122.
Alwaysremember:Eventhoughyourvehicle
isequippedwithAdvanced Airbags,thesafest
placeforchildrenisproperlyrestrainedonthe
backseat.Pleasebesuretoreadtheimpor­
tantinformationinthesectionsthatfollow

Advanced AirbagSystem components
Thefrontpassengerseatinyourvehicle hasa
lotofveryimportantpartsoftheAdvanced
Airbag
Systeminit. Thesepartsincludethe
weight-sensingmat,sensors,wiring, brack­
ets,andmore.Thefunctionofthesystemin
thefrontpassengerseatischeckedbythe
electroniccontrolunitwhentheignitionison.
The
controlunitmonitorstheAdvancedAir­
bagSystemandturnstheairbagindicator
light on
whenamalfunctioninthesystem
componentsisdetected.Thefunctionofthe
airbagindicatorlightisdescribedingreater
detailbelow. Becausethefrontpassenger
seatcontainsimportantpartsoftheAd­
vanced AirbagSystem,youmusttakecareto
preventitfrombeingdamaged.Damageto
theseatmaypreventtheAdvanced Airbagfor
thefrontpassengerseatfromdoingitsjobin
acrash.
Thefront Advanced AirbagSystem
consistsofthefollowing:
- Crashsensorsinthefrontofthevehiclethat
measurevehicleacceleration/deceleration
toprovideinformationtotheAdvancedAir­
bagSystemabouttheseve rityofthecrash.
-
Anelectroniccontrolunit, withintegrated
crashsensorsforfrontandsideimpacts.
Thecontrolunit"decides"whethertofire
thefrontairbagsbasedontheinformation
receivedfromthecrashsensors.Thecontrol
unitalso"decides"whetherthesafetybelt
pretensionersshouldbeactivated.
-AnAdvanced Airbagwithgasgeneratorfor
thedriverinsidethesteeringwheelhub.
-
AnAdvanced Airbagwithgasgeneratorin­
sidetheinstrumentpanelforthefrontpas­
senger.
- Aweight-sensingmatundertheupholstery
paddingofthefrontpassengerseatcushion
thatmeasuresthetotalweightontheseat.

itemscanincreasetheweightregistered
bytheweight-sensingmatandsendthe
wronginformationtotheairbagcontrol
unit.
_Neverstoreitemsunderthefrontpas­
sengerseat.PartsoftheAdvancedAir­
bagSystemunderthepassengerseat
could bedamaged,preventingthemand
theairbagsystemfromworking proper­
ly.
_Never placeseatcoversorreplacement
upholsterythathavenotbeenspecifical­
lyapprovedbyAudionthefrontseats.
-Seatcovers canpreventtheAdvanced
Airbag
Systemfromrecognizing childre­
straintsoroccupantsonthefrontpas­
sengerseatandpreventthesideairbag
intheseatbackrestfromdeploying prop­
erly.
-Never usecushions, pillows,blanketsor
similar
itemsonthefrontpassenger
seat.Theadditionalpaddingwillprevent
theweight-sensingmatintheseatfrom
accurately registering
thechildrestraint
orpersonontheseatandpreventthe
AdvancedAirbagSystemfromfunction­
ing properly.
-Ifyoumustuseachildrestraintonthe
frontpassengerseatandthechild re­
straintmanufacturer'sinstructionsre­
quire
theuseofatowel,foamcushionor
somethingelsetoproperly positionthe
childrestraint,makecertainthatthe
PASSENGERAIRBAGOFFlightcomes
onandstaysonwheneverthechildre-
straintisinstalledonthefrontpassen­
gerseat.
-IfthePASSENGERAIRBAGOFFlight
doesnotcomeonandstayon,immedi­
atelyinstallchildrestraintinarearseat­
ing positionandhavetheairbagsystem
inspectedbyyourAudi dealer.

components worktogether
ThefrontAdvanced AirbagSystemandthe
sideairbagssupplementtheprotectionof­
fered
bythefrontthree-pointsafetybelts
;"'ithpretensionersandload limitersandthe
adjustableheadrestraintstohelp reducethe
riskofinjuryinawiderangeofaccidentand
crashsituations.Besuretoreadtheimpor­
tantinformationaboutsafetyandheedthe
WARNINGSinthischapter.
DeploymentoftheAdvanced AirbagSystem
andtheactivationofthesafetybeltpreten­
sionersdependonthedecelerationmeasured.
bythecrashsensorsandregisteredbythe
electroniccontrolunit.Crash severitydepends
onspeedanddecelerationaswellasthemass
andstiffnessofthevehicleorobjectinvolved
inthecrash.
Whentheelectroniccontrolunitregistersa
low severity crash

beltisnotbeingused,thefirststagedeploys,
followed
bythesecondstageafteramuchlat­
ertimeinthecrashsequence.
Iftheelectroniccontrolunitregistersa crash
ofmediumseverity,thefirststageoftheair­
bag deploys followed
bythesecondstageata
much
latertimeinthecrashsequence- re­
gardlessofwhetherthesafetybeltisbeing
used ornot. In
higherseveritycrashesasreg­
isteredbytheelectroniccontrolunit,boththe
firstandsecondstagesdeployalmostatthe
sametime.
Onthepassengerside,regardlessofsafety
beltuse,theairbagwill beturnedoffifthe
weightonthepassengerseatislessthanthe
amountprogrammedintheelectroniccontrol.

The
frontairbagsaredesignedtoprovidead­
ditionalprotectionforthechestandfaceof

ble
fromtheairbag,

Becauseairbagsinflateintheblinkofaneye
withgreatforce,thingsyou have onyourlap
orhave placed ontheseatcouldbecomedan­
gerousprojectiles,andbepushedintoyou if
theairbaginflates.
Whenanairbagdeploys, finedustisreleased.
Thisisnormalandisnotcausedbyafirein
thevehicle.Thisdustismadeupmostlyofa
powderusedtolubricatetheairbagsasthey
deploy.Itcouldirritateskin.
Itisimportanttorememberthatwhilethe
supplementalairbagsystemisdesignedtore­
ducethelikelihoodofseriousinjuries,other
injuries, forexampleswelling, bruisingand
minorabrasions,canalsohappenwhenair­
bagsinflate.Airbagsdonotprotectthearms
orthelowerpartsofthebody.Frontairbags
onlysupplementthethreepointsafetybelts
insomefrontalcollisionsinwhichthevehicle
decelerationishighenoughtodeploytheair­
bags.
Frontairbagswillnotdeploy:
-iftheignitionisswitchedoffwhenacrash
occurs,

- Never reclinethefrontpassenger'sseat
totransportobjects.Itemscanalso
moveintotheareaofthesideairbagor
thefrontairbagduringbrakingorina
suddenmaneuver.abjectsneartheair-
bagscanbecomeprojectilesandcause
injury,particularlywhentheseatisre-
clined.
- Never
tiltthefrontpassengerseatback-
restforwardwhenthevehicleismoving.
Aninflatingairbagwillforcetheback-
restbackwardandcan injurerearseatoc-
cupants.
AWARNING
The finedustcreatedwhenairbagsdeploy
cancausebreathingproblemsforpeople
withahistoryofasthmaorotherbreath-

-Toreducetheriskofbreathingproblems,

gerseatandinstallitproperlyatoneofthe
rearseatpositions.Havetheairbagsystem
inspectedbyyourAudidealerimmediately.
-movethechildtoarearseatpositionand
makesurethatthechildisproperlyrestrain­
edinachildrestraintthatisappropriatefor
its sizeandage.
-makesurethatthesafetybelttensionsen­
sorisnotblocked.Shakethesafetybelt
latch onthefrontpassengerseatbackand
forth;
-Ifastraportetherisbeingusedtotiethe
childsafetyseattothefrontpassenger

ciallythose12yearsandyounger,shouldal­
ways ride
inthebackseatproperlyrestrained
fortheirageandsize.Theairbag onthepas­
sengersidemakesthefrontseatapotentially
dangerousplace forachildtoride. Thefront
seatisnotthesafestplace forachildinafor­
ward-facing child
safetyseat.Itcanbeavery
dangerousplaceforaninfantoralargerchild
ina rearward-facingseat.
AdvancedAirbagsandtheweight-1sensingmatinthefrontseat
The Advanced Airbagsysteminyourvehicle
hasbeencertifiedtomeetthe"low-risk" re­
quirementsfor3-and6-yearoldchildren on
thepassengersideandsmalladultsonthe
driverside.Thelowriskdeploymentcriteria
areintendedtoreducetheriskofinjury
throughinteractionwiththeairbagthatcan
occur,
forexample,bybeingtooclosetothe
steeringwheelandinstrumentpanelwhen
theairbaginflates. Inaddition,thesystem
hasbeencertifiedtocomplywiththe"sup­
pression"
requirementsoftheSafetyStand­
ard,toturnoffthefrontairbagforinfantsup
to12monthswhoarerestrainedonthefront
passengerseatinchildrestraintsthatare list­
ed
intheStandard.
