Advanced AirbagSystem components
Thefrontpassengerseatinyourvehicle hasa
lotofveryimportantpartsoftheAdvanced
Airbag
Systeminit. Thesepartsincludethe
weight-sensingmat,sensors,wiring, brack­
ets,andmore.Thefunctionofthesystemin
thefrontpassengerseatischeckedbythe
electroniccontrolunitwhentheignitionison.
The
controlunitmonitorstheAdvancedAir­
bagSystemandturnstheairbagindicator
light on
whenamalfunctioninthesystem
componentsisdetected.Thefunctionofthe
airbagindicatorlightisdescribedingreater
detailbelow. Becausethefrontpassenger
seatcontainsimportantpartsoftheAd­
vanced AirbagSystem,youmusttakecareto
preventitfrombeingdamaged.Damageto
theseatmaypreventtheAdvanced Airbagfor
thefrontpassengerseatfromdoingitsjobin
acrash.
Thefront Advanced AirbagSystem
consistsofthefollowing:
- Crashsensorsinthefrontofthevehiclethat
measurevehicleacceleration/deceleration
toprovideinformationtotheAdvancedAir­
bagSystemabouttheseve rityofthecrash.
-
Anelectroniccontrolunit, withintegrated
crashsensorsforfrontandsideimpacts.
Thecontrolunit"decides"whethertofire
thefrontairbagsbasedontheinformation
receivedfromthecrashsensors.Thecontrol
unitalso"decides"whetherthesafetybelt
pretensionersshouldbeactivated.
-AnAdvanced Airbagwithgasgeneratorfor
thedriverinsidethesteeringwheelhub.
-
AnAdvanced Airbagwithgasgeneratorin­
sidetheinstrumentpanelforthefrontpas­
senger.
- Aweight-sensingmatundertheupholstery
paddingofthefrontpassengerseatcushion
thatmeasuresthetotalweightontheseat.

could bedamaged,preventingthemand
theairbagsystemfromworking proper­
ly.
_Never placeseatcoversorreplacement

-Seatcovers canpreventtheAdvanced
Airbag
Systemfromrecognizing childre­
straintsoroccupantsonthefrontpas­
sengerseatandpreventthesideairbag
intheseatbackrestfromdeploying prop­
erly.
-Never usecushions, pillows,blanketsor
similar
itemsonthefrontpassenger
seat.Theadditionalpaddingwillprevent
theweight-sensingmatintheseatfrom
accurately registering
thechildrestraint
orpersonontheseatandpreventthe
AdvancedAirbagSystemfromfunction­
ing properly.
-Ifyoumustuseachildrestraintonthe
frontpassengerseatandthechild re­
straintmanufacturer'sinstructionsre­
quire
theuseofatowel,foamcushionor
somethingelsetoproperly positionthe
childrestraint,makecertainthatthe
PASSENGERAIRBAGOFFlightcomes
onandstaysonwheneverthechildre-
straintisinstalledonthefrontpassen­
gerseat.
-IfthePASSENGERAIRBAGOFFlight
doesnotcomeonandstayon,immedi­
atelyinstallchildrestraintinarearseat­
ing positionandhavetheairbagsystem
inspectedbyyourAudi dealer.
HowtheAdvanced AirbagSystem
components worktogether
ThefrontAdvanced AirbagSystemandthe
sideairbagssupplementtheprotectionof­
fered
bythefrontthree-pointsafetybelts
;"'ithpretensionersandload limitersandthe
adjustableheadrestraintstohelp reducethe
riskofinjuryinawiderangeofaccidentand
crashsituations.Besuretoreadtheimpor­
tantinformationaboutsafetyandheedthe
WARNINGSinthischapter.
DeploymentoftheAdvanced AirbagSystem
andtheactivationofthesafetybeltpreten­
sionersdependonthedecelerationmeasured.
bythecrashsensorsandregisteredbythe
electroniccontrolunit.Crash severitydepends
onspeedanddecelerationaswellasthemass
andstiffnessofthevehicleorobjectinvolved
inthecrash.
Whentheelectroniccontrolunitregistersa
low severity crash
andthesafetybeltisbeing
used,
theairbagwillnotdeploy.Ifthesafety
beltisnotbeingused,thefirststagedeploys,
followed
bythesecondstageafteramuchlat­
ertimeinthecrashsequence.
Iftheelectroniccontrolunitregistersa crash
ofmediumseverity,thefirststageoftheair­
bag deploys followed
bythesecondstageata
much
latertimeinthecrashsequence- re­
gardlessofwhetherthesafetybeltisbeing
used ornot. In
higherseveritycrashesasreg­
isteredbytheelectroniccontrolunit,boththe
firstandsecondstagesdeployalmostatthe
sametime.
Onthepassengerside,regardlessofsafety
beltuse,theairbagwill beturnedoffifthe
weightonthepassengerseatislessthanthe
amountprogrammedintheelectroniccontrol.

The
frontairbagsaredesignedtoprovidead­
ditionalprotectionforthechestandfaceof
thedriverandthefrontseatpassengerwhen:
-safetybeltsarewornproperly, -
theseatshavebeenpositioned50thatthe
occupantisproperlyseatedasfaraspossi­
ble
fromtheairbag,
-andtheheadrestraintshavebeenproperly
adjusted.
Becauseairbagsinflateintheblinkofaneye
withgreatforce,thingsyou have onyourlap
orhave placed ontheseatcouldbecomedan­
gerousprojectiles,andbepushedintoyou if
theairbaginflates.
Whenanairbagdeploys, finedustisreleased.
Thisisnormalandisnotcausedbyafirein
thevehicle.Thisdustismadeupmostlyofa
powderusedtolubricatetheairbagsasthey
deploy.Itcouldirritateskin.
Itisimportanttorememberthatwhilethe
supplementalairbagsystemisdesignedtore­
ducethelikelihoodofseriousinjuries,other
injuries, forexampleswelling, bruisingand
minorabrasions,canalsohappenwhenair­
bagsinflate.Airbagsdonotprotectthearms
orthelowerpartsofthebody.Frontairbags
onlysupplementthethreepointsafetybelts
insomefrontalcollisionsinwhichthevehicle
decelerationishighenoughtodeploytheair­
bags.
Frontairbagswillnotdeploy:
-iftheignitionisswitchedoffwhenacrash
occurs,
-
insidecollisions,'--
-inrear-endcollisions,
-
inrollovers,
-
whenthecrashdecelerationmeasuredby
theairbagsystemislessthantheminimum
thresholdneededforairbagdeploymentas
registeredbytheelectroniccontrolunit.
Thefrontpassengerairbagwillalsonotdeploy:
-whenthefrontpassengerseatisnotoccu­
pied,
-
whentheweightonthefrontpassenger
seatassensedbytheAdvanced AirbagSys­
temindicatesthatthefrontairbagonthe
passengersidehastobeturnedoffbythe~
--electroniccontrolunit(thePASSENGER AIR
BAGOFFlightcomesonandstayson).
-~WARNING
Sittinginthewrongpositioncanincrease
theriskofseriousinjuryincrashes.
_Toreducetheriskofinjurywhentheair-
bags
inflate,thedriverandpassengers
mustalwayssitinanuprightposition,
mustnotLeanagainstorplaceanypart
oftheirbodytooclosetotheareawhere
theairbagsarelocated.
_Occupantswhoareunbelted,outofposi-
tion
ortooclosetotheairbagcanbese-
riously injured byanairbagasitunfolds
withgreatforceintheblinkofaneye

AWARNING
Achild inarearward-facingchildsafety
seatinstalledonthefrontpassengerseat
will beseriouslyinjuredandcanbekilled if
thefrontairbaginflates-evenwithanAd-
vanced AirbagSystem.
-Theinflatingairbagwillhitthechild
safetyseatorinfantcarrierwithgreat
forceandwillsmashthechildsafetyseat
and childagainstthebackrest,center
armrest,doororroof.
- Always
installrear-facing childsafety
seatsontherearseat.
-Ifyoumustinstallarearwardfacing
child
safetyseatonthefrontpassenger
seatbecauseofexceptionalcircumstan-
cesandthePASSENGER AIRBAGOFF
lightdoesnotcomeonandstayon,im-
mediatelyinstalltherear-facing child
safetyseatinarearseatingpositionand
havetheairbagsysteminspectedbyyour
Audidealer.

-Never holdthingsinyourhandsoron

- Never place
orattachaccessoriesoroth-
erobjects(suchascupholders,tele-
phonebrackets, large,heavyorbulkyob-
jects)onthedoors,overornearthearea
marked"AIRBAG" onthesteeringwheel,
instrumentpanel,seatbackrestsorbe-
tweenthoseareasandyourself.These
objectscouldcauseinjuryinacrash,es-
peciallywhentheairbagsinflate.
- Never reclinethefrontpassenger'sseat
totransportobjects.Itemscanalso
moveintotheareaofthesideairbagor
thefrontairbagduringbrakingorina
suddenmaneuver.abjectsneartheair-
bagscanbecomeprojectilesandcause
injury,particularlywhentheseatisre-
clined.
- Never
tiltthefrontpassengerseatback-
restforwardwhenthevehicleismoving.
Aninflatingairbagwillforcetheback-
restbackwardandcan injurerearseatoc-
cupants.
AWARNING
The finedustcreatedwhenairbagsdeploy
cancausebreathingproblemsforpeople
withahistoryofasthmaorotherbreath-
ingconditions.
-Toreducetheriskofbreathingproblems,
thosewithasthmaorotherrespiratory
conditionsshouldgetfreshairright
away bygettingoutofthevehicleor
openingwindowsordoors.
-Ifyouareinacollisioninwhichairbags
deploy,washyourhandsandfacewith
mildsoapandwaterbeforeeating.
_Becarefulnottogetthedustintoyour
eyes,orintoanycutsorscratches.

T.heairbagsystemcan beactivated only
once. After
anairbaghasinflated,it
mustbereplaced byanauthorizedAudi
dealerorqualified technician whohas
thetechnicalinformation,trainingand
specialequipmentnecessary.
- The
airbagsystemcanbedeployed only
once. After
anairbaghasbeendeployed,
itmustbereplaced withnewreplace­
mentpartsdesignedandapprovedespe­
ciallyforyour Audimodelversion.Re­
placementofcompleteairbagsystems
orairbagcomponentsmustbeper­
formedbyqualifiedworkshopsonly.
Make
surethatanyairbagserviceaction
isenteredinyour AudiWarranty&Main­
tenancebookletunderAIRBAGREPLACE­
MENTRECORD.
-Forsafetyreasonsinsevereaccidents,
thealternatorandstarterareseparated
fromthevehiclebatterywith apyrotech­
nic circuit
interrupter.
-Work onthepyrotechnic circuitinter­
ruptermustonlybeperformedbya
qualified
dealer- riskofanaccident!

Ifthevehicle orthecircuitinterrupter
isscrapped,allapplicablesafetypre-

Repair,careanddisposaioftheairbags
&.WARNING
Impropercare, servicingandrepair proce­
dures canincrease
theriskofpersonalin­
jury and
deathbypreventinganairbag
from deployingwhenneededordeploying
an airbag unexpectedly:
-Nevercoyer,obstruct,orchangethe
steeringwheelhornpadorairbagcoyer
or
theinstrumentpanelor modifythem
inanyway.
-Neverattachanyobjectssuchascup
holders
ortelephonemountingstothe
surfacescoveringtheairbagunits.
- For cleaning
thehorn padorinstrument
panel,useonlyasoft,dryclothorone
moistenedwith plainwater.Solventsor
cleanerscoulddamagetheairbagcoyer
or
changethestiffnessorstrengthofthe
materialsothattheairbagcannotde­
ploy
andprotectproperly.
-Never repair,adjust,orchangeanyparts
oftheairbagsystem.
-Allworkonthesteeringwheel,instru­
mentpanel,frontseatsorelectricalsys­
tem(includingtheinstallationofaudio
equipment,cellulartelephonesandCS
radios,etc.)mustbeperformedbya
qualified technician whohasthetraining
and
specialequipmentnecessary.
-For anyworkontheairbagsystem,we
strongly
recommendthatyouseeyour
authorizedAudidealeror qualified work­
shop.
Parts
oftheairbagsystemareinstalledat
rnanydifferentplaces
onyour Audi.Installing,
rernoving, servicingorrepairing apartinan
areaofthevehiclecandamageapartofan
airbagsystemandpreventthatsystemfrom
working properlyinacollision.
There
aresomeimportantthingsyou haveto
knowtornakesurethattheeffectivenessof
thesystemwillnotbeimpairedandthatdis­
carded
componentsdonotcauseinjury orpol­
lute
theenvironment.

evenfatalinjurytothechild.
- If,
inexceptionalcircumstances,you
mustinstall aforward-facing childre­
straintonthefrontpassengerseat,al­
ways move
theseatintoitsrearmostpo­
sition
intheseat'sforeandaft~djust­
mentrange,asfarawayfromtheairbag
aspossible. Thebackrestmustbeadjust­
edtoanuprightposition. Makesurethat
thePASSENGERAIRBAGOFFlight
comesonandstaysonallthetimewhen­
evertheignitionisswitchedon.

-IfthePASSENGERAIRBAGOFFlight
doesnotgooutwhenanadultissitting
onthefrontpassengerseataftertaking

theairbagsysteminspectedby
yourAudidealerbeforetransporting
anyoneonthefrontpassengerseat.

Iftheweight-sensingmatinthefrontpas­
sengerseatdetectsanemptyseat,the
frontairbagonthepassengerside willbe
turnedoff,andPASSENGERAIRBAGOFF
willstayon.
Importantsafety instructions on

Airbagsystem
- asafetybeltextenderhasnotbeenleftin
thesafetybeltlatchforthefrontpassenger
seat.
InadditiontothePASSENGERAIRBAGOFF
lightinthecenteroftheinstrumentpanel,
themessagePASSENGERAIRBAGOFFor
PASSENGERAIRBAGONwill brieflyappear
intheinstrumentclusterdisplay. Thisistoin­
formthedriverofthecurrentfrontpassenger
airbagstatus.

Anairbagsystemthatisnotfunctioning
properlycannotprovidesupplementalpro-
tectioninafrontalcrash.
-
Iftheairbag indicatorlightcomeson,it
meansthattheremay besomething
wrong withtheAdvanced AirbagSystem.
Itispossiblethattheairbagwillinflate
whenitisnotsupposedto,orwillnotin-
flatewhenitshould.
-Havetheairbagsysteminspectedimme-
diatelybyyourAudi dealer.

Ifthefrontairbaginflates, achildwithout
achildrestraint,ina rearward-facing child
safetyseatorinaforward-facing childre-
straintthathasnotbeenproperlyinstalled
willbeseriously injuredandcanbekilled.
- Even
thoughyourvehicleisequipped
withanAdvanced AirbagSystem,make
certainthatallchildren, especially12
yearsandyounger, alwaysrideonthe
backseatproperlyrestrainedfortheir
ageandsize.
- Always
installforwardorrear-facing
child
safetyseatsontherearseat- even
with
anAdvanced AirbagSystem.
-Ifyoumustinstallarearward-facing
child
safetyseatonthefrontpassenger
seatbecauseofexceptionalcircumstan-
cesandthePASSENGERAIRBAGOFF

Other thingsthatcanaffect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changingthevehicle'ssuspensionsystemcan
changethewaythattheAdvanced AirbagSys­
temperformsinacrash. ForexampLe, using
tire-rim
combinationsnotapprovedbyAudi,
lowering
thevehicle,changingthestiffnessof
thesuspension,includingthesprings,suspen­
sionstruts,shockabsorbersetc. canchange
theforcesthataremeasuredbytheairbag
sensorsandsenttotheelectroniccontrol
unit.Somesuspensionchangescan,forexam­
ple,increasetheforce levelsmeasuredbythe
sensorsandmaketheairbagsystemdeployin
crashesinwhich itwouldnotdeploy ifthe
changeshadnotbeenmade.Otherkindsof
changesmayreducetheforcelevelsmeas­
uredbythesensorsandpreventtheairbag
fromdeployingwhenitshould.
Thesensorsinthesafetybeltbuckleforthe
driverandfrontpassengerseattelltheelec­
tronic
controlmoduleifthesafetybeltis
latchedor not.Ifthesafetybeltisbeing used,
thefrontairbag willdeployataslightlyhigh­
errateofvehicledecelerationthanifthesafe­
tybeltisnotbeing used..Therefore,inapar­
ticular collision, it
ispossiblethatanairbag
will
notdeployataseatingpositionwherethe
safetybeltis bei ngusedbutwill inflateatthe
positionwherethesafetybeltisnotbeing
used.
Itisimportantthatnothinginterfere
withthesafetybeltbucklessothatthesen-
sorscansendthecorrectinformationabout
safetybeltusetotheeLectroniccontrolunit.

Changingthevehicle'ssuspensioninclud-
ing
useofunapprovedtire-rimcombina-
tionscanchangeAdvanced Airbagper-
formanceandincreasetheriskofserious
personalinjuryinacrash.
- Never install
suspensioncomponents

sengersidemakesthefrontseatapotentially
dangerousplace forachildtoride. Thefront
seatisnotthesafestplace forachildinafor­

AdvancedAirbagsandtheweight-1sensingmatinthefrontseat
The Advanced Airbagsysteminyourvehicle
hasbeencertifiedtomeetthe"low-risk" re­
quirementsfor3-and6-yearoldchildren on
thepassengersideandsmalladultsonthe
driverside.Thelowriskdeploymentcriteria
areintendedtoreducetheriskofinjury
throughinteractionwiththeairbagthatcan

outofcontrolandhelpsyoutogetthevehicle

undercontrolbyselectively brakingthe
wheels,and/orreducingenginepowerand
providingsteeringassistancetohelpholdthe
vehicle onthedriver'sintendedcourse. Thein­
dicatorlightDlintheinstrumentcluster

ESPhaslimitations.Itisimportanttoremem­
berthatESPcannotovercomethelawsof
physics.Itwillnotalways beabletohelpout
underallconditionsyoumaycomeupagainst.
Forexample,ESPmaynotalways beableto
helpyoumastersituationswherethereisa
sudde!lchangeinthecoefficientoffrictionof
theroadsurface.Whenthereisasectionof
dryroadthatissuddenlycovered withwater,
slushorsnow,ESPcannotperformthesame
wayitwould onthedrysurface.Ifthevehicle
hydroplanes(ridesonacushionofwaterin­
steadoftheroadsurface),ESPwillnotbe
abletohelp yousteerthevehiclebecausecon­
tactwiththepavementhasbeeninterrupted

Ouringfastcornering, particularly onwinding
roads,
ESPcannotalwaysdealaseffectively
with difficult driving
situationsasatlower
speeds.
Alwaysadjustyourspeedanddrivingstyleto
road,traffiçandweatherconditions.ESPcan­
notoverridethevehicle'sphysicallimits,in­
creasetheavailabletraction,orkeep avehicle
on
theroad ifroaddepartureisaresultof
