5AE OW-40. However,duringtheentiretime
betweenoilchangeintervals,nevertopoff
withmorethanatotalof0.5qt/literengine
ailthatdoesnotconformtoAudioilspecifica­
tionVW50200.

Viscosity
Engine oilsaregradedaccordingtotheirvis­
cosity. The
praperviscositygradeoilforyour
enginedependsonclimacticorseasonalcon­
ditions
whereyou drive.Voucanuseoilwitha
viscosity
gradeofSAESW40acrossalltem­
peraturerangesfornormaldrivingconditions.
However, ifengineoilviscositygradeSAE
SW40isnotavailable,youcanalsouseviscos­
itygradeSAESW-30orSAEOW-40aslongas
ItmeetsAudi oilqualitystandardVWS0200
Specifications.
Because
engineoilthatmeetstheAudi oil
standardmaynotbeavailableeverywhere
when youneedit,westronglyrecommend
thatyoualwayscarrywithyouanextraquart
(lIter)ofoilthatexpresslyconformstothe
oilsavailabletodayprovidebetterenginelu­
brication
thatcanoutlasttraditionalpetrole­

Engineailconsumption
Theengineinyourvehicle depends onan ade­
quate
amountofoilto lubricate andcoolail
ofitsmoving parts.
Inordertoprovideeffectivelubricationand
coolingofinternaLenginecomponents,allin­
ternalcombustionenginesconsumeacertain
amountofoil.Oilconsumptionvariesfram
enginetoengineandmaychangesignificantly
overthelifeoftheengine.Typically,engines
withaspecified break-inperiod(see
~page162)consumemoreoilduringthe
break-inperiodthantheyconsumeafteroil
consumptionhasstabilized.
Undernormalconditions,therateofoilcon­
sumptiondependsonthequalityandviscosity
oftheoil,theRPM(revolutionsperminute)at
whichtheengineisoperated,theambient
temperatureandroadconditions.Furtherfac­
torsaretheamountofoildilutionfromwater
condensationorfuelresidueandtheoxida­
tionleveloftheoil.Asanyengineissubjectto
wearasmileagebuildsup,theoilconsump­
tionmayincreaseovertimeuntilreplacement
ofworncomponentsmaybecomenecessary.
Withallthesevariablescomingintoplay, no
standardrateofoilconsumptioncanbees­
