Fabrics and fabric coverings
Fabrics and fabric coverings (e .g. seats, door
trim panels, etc.) should be cleaned at regular
interva ls with a vacuum cleaner. T his removes
surface dirt particles which could become em­
bedded in the fabr ic through use. Steam
cleaners should not be used, because the
steam tends to push the dirt deeper into the
fabric and lock it there.
Norm al cleaning
Generally, we recommend using a soft sponge
or a lint-free microfiber cloth to the clean fab­
ric. Brushes should only be used for carpets
and floor mats, s ince other fabric surfaces
could be harmed by b rushes .
Normal surface sta ins can be cleaned using a
commercially available foam cleaner . Spread
the foam on the surface of the fabric with a
soft sponge and work it in gently . Do not satu­
rate the fabric. Then pat the foam d ry using
absorbent, dry cloths (e.g. microfibe r clo th)
and vacuum it afte r it has dr ied comp lete ly.
Cl eaning stains
Stains caused by beve rages (e .g. coffee, fruit
juice, etc.) can be t reated with a mild deter­
gent solution. App ly the dete rgent so lution
wi th a sponge. In the case of s tubbor n stains,
a detergent paste can be applied directly to

the stain and worked into the fabric. After ­
wards, use copious amounts of clean water to remove the rema in ing detergent. Apply the
water with a damp cloth or sponge and pat
the fabric dry with an absorbent, dry cloth.
Stains from choco late or makeup should have
detergent paste (e.g . ox-gall soap) rubbed in ­
to them. Afterwards, remove the soap with
water (damp sponge).
A lcohol can be used to treat stains from
grease, o il, lipstick or a ballpoint pen. Melted
grease or dye must be patted off using ab­
sorbent mater ial. It may be necessary to re­
treat the areas with detergent paste and wa­
te r.
In the case of genera l soiling of the uphols­
tery and cover material, we recommend hir ing
a specia list that has the equipment to clean
t h e seat covers and othe r fabr ic surfaces by
shampooing and spray extraction .

Open Velcro fasteners on your clothing can
damage the seat cover. Please make sure

Plastic parts and instrument panel

Solvents can change the properties of
some p lastics and make it harder for the

Instrument cluster glass
~ Clean the glass with a soft, damp cloth .
I n order to preserve the anti-glare properties
of the inst rument cl uste r glass, it should on ly
be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth.
Natural leather
Applies to vehicles: with natural leather
Audi makes great efforts to maintain the
properties , natural look and feel of interior
leather.
G ener al
We offe r many different types of leather on
our vehicles. Most are different types of nappa
l eather, which has a smooth su rface and
comes in var ious co lo rs .
The in tensi ty of the color de termines the v is u ­
a l characterist ics and appearance . If the sur ­
face of the leathe r has a typical natural look,
then the leather is a nappa leather that has
been left in a relatively natural cond ition. This
leather offers par ticularly good com fort and
breathes well . F ine veins, closed grains , in sect
b ites, ski n folds , and subtle var iations in color
remain visib le. These characte ristics demon­
strate that the mater ia l is na tural.
Natural nappa leather is not covered by a col ­
or finish .
It is therefore more sens itive to soil­
ing a nd wear, which is something you need to
consider if ch ild ren, an ima ls o r othe r factors
migh t prove to be particularly hard on the
l eathe r.
B y contrast, leather types that are cove red by
a co lored f inish laye r are more durable. This has a positive effect on the leather's resis
t­
ance to wear and soiling in dai ly use. On the
other hand, the typ ica l character istics of natu­
ral leather are barely or not apparent. Howev­
er, th is does not mean that the leather itse lf
is of inferior quality .
Care and handling
Because of the exclusive nature of the types of
l eather that Aud i uses and their unique prop­
erties (such as sensit ivity to oils, grease, soil­
ing, etc.) , you will need to be somewhat care­
ful with these leathers, and a certain type of ca re is req uired. Fo r example, dark clothing
mater ials can disco lor leather seats (especia l­
l y if such clo thing is damp and was not dyed
correct ly) . D ust and dirt pa rticl es i n pores,
f olds, and seams can have an abrasive effect
and can damage the leather surface as we ll as
weaken seams.
T he lea ther should be clea ned regularly as
neede d. After hav ing been used for a relat ive ly
long time, your leather seats will acq uire a
rich aged finish . This is a characteristic of nat­
u ral leather and a sign of true quality .
In order to maintain the val ue of this nat ural
product
over the life of your ve hicle, you
sho uld follow t he recommendations be low:

- T o keep your lea ther from b leaching o ut,
do not allow it to be exposed to bright
sunlight for long periods of time . If yo u
have to leave the veh icle parked outside
for long per iods, cover the leather to
protect it from direct exposure to sun­
light .
- Sharp objects on cloth ing, such as zip­
pers, rivets o r sharp pieces on belts can
leave permanent sc ratches or scrape
ma rks on the su rface of the leath er.
(l) Tips
- After each time you clean the leather and
a t regular intervals , use a leathe r preser­
vative c reme that con tains UV-b locke rs
and tha t wo rks into the leathe r. T his

creme will nourish and moisturize the
l eather, helping it to b reathe and stay
supple . It also helps to b uild up a protec­
tive coat ing on the surface.
- Clean the leather every 2 -3 months,
and clean any areas that get soiled.
- Remove fresh marks made by ba llpoint
pens, ink, lipstick, shoe polish, etc . as
soon as possib le.
- Preserve the color of the leather as need­
ed by using a special colored leather care
creme to touch up areas of uneven color.

Natural leather requires special care and at­
tention .
Normal cleaning
~ Clean soiled areas wit h a slightly moistened
cotton or woolen cloth.
Mor e stubborn dirt
~ More stubbo rn dirt can be removed using a
cloth saturated with a mi ld soap so lution (2
tablespoons mi ld liquid soap) .
~ Never allow the soap solution to saturate
the leather, and make certa in that no water
soaks into the seams .
~ Wipe off the soap solution with a soft, dry
cloth .
Cleaning sp ots
~ Remove fresh w ater -b ased spots (such as
coffee, tea, ju ices, blood) w ith an absorbent
cloth or paper towel.
~ Remove fresh gr ea se or oil -ba sed spot s
(such as butter, mayonnaise, chocolate) with
an absorbent cloth or paper towe l, or use
the cleane r from the leathe r care kit if the
spot has not yet pene trated in to the surface
of the leather .
~ Use an oil/grease dissolving spray , if oil /
grea se spots h ave d ried on.
~ Remove specific kinds of spots (ballpoint
pen, felt marker, fingernail polish, water-

based paint, shoe po lish, etc.) with a spot
remover specifically formu lated for leather .
Le ather car e
~ Every half yea r use an approved leather care
product (available from your Audi dea ler) to
care for the leathe r.
~ App ly the product very sparingly .
~ Wipe it off with a damp cloth.

will be g lad to help you and tell you abo ut our
full range of leather care products, such as:
- Leather cleaning and care kit
- Cremes to care fo r colored lea ther
- Spot removers for ballpoint pens, shoe pol-
ish, etc.
- Oil/grease d issolving spray
- New and upcom ing products.

Applies to vehicles: with Alcantara upholstery
Removing dust and dirt
~ Moisten a cloth, squeeze out excess water
and wipe down the seat surfaces.
Removing stains
~ Moisten a cloth with lukewarm water or
w ith diluted
ethyl (rubbing ) alcohol.
~ Dab at the stain . Start at the outs ide and
work inwards . •

• Once the stain is no longer visib le, use a
soft dry cloth or tissue to soak up the mois ­
ture.
Do not use leather cleaning products on Al ­
cantara .
You may use a suitable shampoo fo r remov ing
d ust and dirt.
Dust and grit in the pores and seams can
scratch and damage the surface. If the ca r is
l eft standing i n the sun fo r long periods, the
A lcantara should be protected against direc t
sunlight to prevent it from fading. Slight co lor
variations will deve lop in normal use and are
not an indication of material deterioration.

Safety belts
Only well -maintained safety belts work relia ­
bly when needed .
Heavily soiled safety belts may no t retr act
p roperly.
• Keep be lts clean.
• Fo r cl eaning, use a m ild soap and wate r sol­
u tion. Let be lts dry thoro ughly and away
from direct sunlight .
• Do not a llow inertia reel safety be lts to re­
tract before they are completely dry .
• Check the condition of your safety belts

- Safety belt performance depends on cor­

from the veh icle to clean them .

b leach or dyes. They have co rrosive prop­
erties which wea ken the webb ing.
- When clean ing your safety be lts, inspect
them for damage . If you discover dam­
age, see your Audi dealer.

Engine compartment
Be especially careful when cleaning the en­
gine comportment.
Alway s swit ch off the ign ition before clean­
ing the engine <=;>.&, .
Plenum panel
Remove leaves from the plenum panel in front
of the w indshield under the eng ine hood . This
prevents the water drain holes from becoming
blocked, and it prevents debris from enter ing
the vehicle interior t hro ugh the heating and
ventilat ion ducts.
Corrosion protection
T he engine compartment and transmission
have been corrosion -protected at the factory .
Good anti- corrosion treatmen t is very impor­
tant, particu larly in the w inter.
If the vehicle
is frequently driven on salt treated roads, the
entire engine compartment and p lenum panel
shou ld be thoroughly cleaned at the end of
winter and retreated to prevent salt damage.
At the same time, the underside of the vehicle
shou ld be washed as well.
If the engine compartment is cleaned at any
time with grease removing solutions

you have the engine washed, the anti-corro­sion treatment is a lmost always removed as
wel l. It is therefore essential to have a long­
lasting corrosion protection reapplied to all
surfaces, seams, joints and components in the
engine compartment .
A WARNING
Be aware: The engine compartment of any
motor vehicle is a potentially hazardous
area.
- Before working in the engine compart­
ment, be sure to read the informat ion
c::.>page 174.
- Before reaching into the front plenum
pane l, always remove the ignition key.
O therw ise, the windshield wipe r system
cou ld unintentiona lly be switched on,
poss ibly causing personal injury from the
moving wiper linkage .
- Never reach into the area around or
touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary fan
is temperature controlled and can switch
on suddenly- even when the ign it ion is
off.
- Do not wash, wax or dry the engine w ith
the engine running. Moving or hot parts could injure you .
- Do not clean the underside of the chas­ sis, fenders, wheel covers, or other hard
to reach parts w ithout protecting your
hands and arms. You may cut yourse lf on
sharp-edged metal parts .

-Blend must contain not more than 15%
MTBE.
Seasonally adjusted gasoline
Many gasoline grades are blended to perform
espec ially we ll for winter or summer driving.
During seasonal change-over, we suggest that
you fill up at busy gas stat ions where the sea­
sonal adjustment is more likely to be made in
time .
(D Note
-Methanol fuels which do not meet these
requirements may cause corrosion and
damage to plastic and rubber compo­
nents in the fuel system .
- Do not use fue ls that fail to meet the
specified criter ia in this chapter.
- If you are unable to determine whether
or not a particular fue l blend meets the
specifications, ask your service station or
its fuel supp lier.
- Do not use fuel for which the contents
cannot be identified.
- Fuel system damage and performance
problems resulting from the use of fuels
different from those specified are not
the responsibility of Audi and are not
covered under the New Vehicle or the Emission Control System Warranties.
- If you experience a loss of fuel economy
or driveability and performance prob­ l ems due to the use of one of these fuel
blends, we recommend that you switch
to unblended fuel.
Gasoline additives
A major concern among many auto manufac­
turers is carbon deposit build- up caused by
the type of gasoline you use.
Although gasoline grades differ from one manufacturer to another , they have certain
things in common. All gasoline grades contain
substances that can cause deposits to collect
on vital engine parts, such as fuel injectors
and intake valves. Although most gasoline brands include additives to keep engine and

fuel systems clean, they are not equally effec ­
tive .
A udi recommends using TOP TIER Detergent
Gasoline. For more info rmation on TOP TIER
Detergent Gasoline, please go to the official
website (www.toptiergas.com).
After an extended period of using inadeq uate
fuels, built-up carbon deposits can rob yo ur
engine of peak performance.
Q) Note
Damage or malf unct ion due to poor fue l
quality is not covered by the Aud i New Ve­
hicle Limited Warranty.
Fuel tank
Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the right rear
side panel behind the fuel fille r flap.
If the unlocking system should fail, you can
still open the flap manually -for detailed in ­
structions see
¢ page 179.
You can find the fuel tank capacity of your ve­ hicle in
Technical Data ¢ page 240.
The label on the inside of the fuel fi ller flap
tells you the correct fue l for your vehicle. For
more information about fuel specifications,
see
¢ page 176.
Your vehicle fue l tank has an on -board refue l­
li ng vapor recovery system. This feature helps
to prevent fuel vapors from escaping from the
tank and polluting the environment while you refuel your vehicle . In order to fill the tank
properly while protecting the environment,
please fo llow this refueling procedure careful­
ly.
_&. WARNING
Under normal operating conditions, never
carry additional fuel containers in your car.
Gas canisters and other containers used to
transport f uel can be dangero us. Such con­
tainers, full or empty, may leak and could
cause a fire in a collision. If you must

transport fue l to use for your lawn mower,
snow blower, etc., be very careful and al­
ways observe local and state laws regard­
ing the use, transportat ion and storage of
such fuel containers . Make certain the con­
tainer meets industry standards (A NSI/
AS TM F852 -86) .

Never drive your vehicle unti l the fuel tank
is completely d ry. The irreg ular s upply of
fuel can cause misfir ing. Gasoline cou ld
e nte r into the exhaust system and damage
t he cata lytic conve rter.

When adding fue l, the ignition and any ce llu­
lar phones in the vehicle must be sw itched
off .

Refuelling procedure
• Insert the f uel no zz le from the gasoline
pump into the fuel fi ller neck as far as it w ill
go .
• Select a med ium refuelling rate so that the
no zz le sw itches off automatically when the
tank i s full.
Putting the fuel cap back on
• After fi lling your tank, twist the fuel filler
cap clockw ise until you hear a definite click.
• Close the fue l filler flap.
T o avoid fuel s pill ing or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel filler cap properly and completely . An improperly closed fuel fi ll­
er cap may also cause the MIL lamp¢

to come on.
A WARNING
Imp roper refue ling or handling of fuel can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns.
- Fue l is highly flammable and can cause
severe burns and other injur ies .
- Fai lure to shut the engine off while refu­
eling and/or to insert the pump nozzle
fu lly into the fuel filter neck could cause
fuel to spray out of filler neck or to ove r­
f low. Fuel spray and overflowing fuel can
cause a fire.
- Never use a ce llu lar telephone whil e re­
fue ling . Th e e lec tromagnet ic radiat io n
can cause spa rks th at can igni te fuel v a­
pors an d cause a fire.
- N ever get back in to your vehicle whi le re­
fue ling.
If in excep tio nal cir cumstances
you must get back in your vehi cle while
ref ueling, make ce rtain that you close
the door and touch metal to discharge
static electricity be fore touching the fill­
er nozzle again . Static e lectr icity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
re leased d uring refueling .
- Never smoke or have an open f lame any­
where in or near your ve hicle when refu­
eling or fi lling a portable fue l conta iner .

Releasing the engine hood
The engine hood is released from inside the
vehicle.

- To reduce the risk of being burned, never

the struts is reduced .

Do not try to push it shut; it may fail to en­

A hood that is not completely latched
could fly up and b lock your view while dr iv­
i ng.
- When you close the engine hood, check it
to make sure the safety catch has proper­
ly engaged . The hood should be flush
with the surrounding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while dr iv ing that the hood
is not secured properly, stop at once and
close it.
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment!
Wheneve r you must pe rform any wo rk in the
eng ine compartment, for e xample chec king
and filling the different fluids, ther e is a risk
of injury, burns and a ccident s. To prevent
p ers onal injury al ways obs erv e the following
WARNINGS. The eng in e c ompartm ent of an y
vehicl e is a hazardou s area!

A WARNING
To he lp avoid injury, before yo u check any­
thing under the hood:
- Sw itch off the engine .
- Remove the ignition key.

-Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever of automatic trans-
mission to "P" (Park); put manual trans­
mission in Neutral.
- Always let the engine cool down . Hot
components will burn skin on contact.
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment . Wait until no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fully opening the hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment .
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents. They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxili­
ary electric fan is temperature controlled
and can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap
when the engine is still warm. The cool­
ant system is pressurized and hot cool­ ant could spray out .
-Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir .
- Do not remove the engine cover under
any circumstances. This increases the
risk of burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electri­
cal system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or
open flames. Fluids in the engine com­
partment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher im­
mediately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and personal in­
jury while the engine is running or being
started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
-If you must perform a check or repair
with the engine running:

- First, fully apply the parking brake,
move selector lever of automatic trans­
mission to "P" (Park); put manual
transmission in Neutral.
- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V -belts
or other moving parts, or from contact­ ing hot parts. Tie back hair before
starting, and wear no clothing that will hang or droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and
chemical hazards~,& .

- Engine exhaust, some of its constituents,
and certain vehicle components contain
or emit chemicals known to the State of
California to cause cancer and birth de­
fects and reproductive harm. In addition,
certain fluids contained in vehicles and

birth defects or other reproductive harm.
- Battery posts, terminals and related ac­
cessories contain lead and lead com­
pounds, chemicals known to the State of
California to cause cancer and reproduc­
tive harms. Wash hands after handling.

Engine oil
Engine oil specifications
The engine oil used in your Audi needs the
right kind of oil.
T he eng ine in your Aud i is a soph ist icated
powerplant that was built to exact ing spec ifi­
cat ions . T his engine needs the right kind of
engine oil that meets specifications regard ing
quality and viscosity so that it can run
smooth ly and reliably . Choosing the right o il
and changing oil within the time and mileage
i ntervals printed in your vehicle's Warranty
&
Maintenance booklet matters a lot more to­
day tha n it did years ago. Audi has developed
a spec ia l quality standard for engine oil that
will help assure that you r vehicle's engine w ill
get the lubr ication it needs fo r proper opera­
t ion.
