Prewarning
This warning is issued, for instance when there is
the impending danger of a collision or the disj tance to the vehicle ahead is too small.
The driver must intervene actively when there is
a prewarning.
Acutewarningwithbrakingfunction
Acute warning is displayed in case of the immij
nent danger of a collision when the vehicle apj
proaches another object at a high differential
speed.
The driver must intervene actively when there is
an acute warning. If necessary, the driver is asj sisted by an automatic braking intervention in a
possible risk of collision.
Acute warnings can also be triggered without
previous forewarning.
BrakinginterventionThe detection of objects can be influenced by
technical system limitations, for instance pedesj trians or stationary objects. Observe the limitaj

The warning prompts the driver to react. During a warning, the maximum braking force is used.
Prerequisite for the brake booster is sufficiently quick and hard stepping on the brake pedal. Thesystem can assist with automatic braking interj
vention if there is a risk of a collision. The braking
intervention can bring the vehicle to a complete
stop.
Manual transmission: during a braking intervenj
tion up to a complete stop, the engine may be
shut down.
The braking intervention occurs only if vehicle stability has not been restricted, for instance by
deactivating the DSC Dynamic Stability Control.
At speeds above approx. 130 mph/210 km/h, the
braking intervention occurs as a brief braking
pressure. No automatic delay occurs.
The driver may cancel the braking intervention
by stepping on the accelerator pedal or by acj
tively moving the steering wheel.

lowing situations:
'xIn heavy fog, wet conditions, or snowfall.'xIn tight curves.'xIf the driving stability control systems are limj
ited or deactivated, for instance DSC OFF.'xIf the radar sensor is dirty or obscured.
Warningsensitivity
The more sensitive the warning settings are, for
example the warning time, the more warnings are
displayed. Therefore, there may also be an exj
cess of premature or unjustified warnings and rej
actions.
PersonwarningwithCity lightbrakingfunction
Concept
The system can help prevent accidents with pej destrians.
When driving at city speeds, the system will isj
sue a warning if there is imminent risk of a collij sion with pedestrians, and support this with a
light braking function.
The camera in the area of the interior mirror conj
trols the system.

ActiveBlindSpotDetection
Concept
Active Blind Spot Detection detects vehicles in the blind spot or vehicles approaching from bej
hind in the adjacent lane. A warning is issued in
various gradations in these situations.
Generalinformation
Two radar sensors in the rear bumper monitorthe area behind and next to the vehicle at speedsabove approx. 30 mph/50 km/h.
The system indicates whether there are vehicles
in the blind spot, arrow 1, or approaching from
behind in the adjacent lane, arrow 2.
The light in the exterior mirror housing is dimj
med.
Before you change lanes after setting the turn
signal, the system issues a warning in the situaj
tions described above.
The light in the exterior mirror housing flashes
and the steering wheel vibrates.

Generalinformation'xDuring normal brake application, the bottombrake lights light up.'xDuring heavy brake application, the top brake
lights additionally light up.
Alertnessassistant
Concept
The system can detect decreasing alertness or
fatigue of the driver during long, monotonous trips, for instance on highways. In this situation, it
is recommended that the driver takes a break.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the driverss personal judgment in assessing one's physical state. An increasing lack of alertness orfatigue may not be detected or not be detectedin time. There is a risk of an accident. Make
sure that the driver is rested and alert. Adjust driving style to traffic conditions.
Function
The system is switched on each time the engine
is started and cannot be switched off.
After travel has begun, the system monitors cerj
tain aspects of the driver's behavior, so that dej
creasing alertness or fatigue can be detected.
This procedure takes the following criteria into
account:'xPersonal driving style, for instance steering behavior.'xDriving conditions, for instance length of trip.
Starting at approximately 43 mph/70 km/h, the
system is active and can display a recommendaj tion to take a break.
Breakrecommendation If the driver becomes less alert or fatigued, amessage is displayed in the Control Display withthe recommendation to take a break.
A recommendation to take a break is displayed only once during an uninterrupted trip.
After a break, another recommendation to take a
break cannot be displayed until after approxij mately 45 minutes.
Systemlimits
The function may be limited in the following sitj
uations, for instance and will either output an inj
correct warning or no warning at all:
'xWhen the clock is set incorrectly.'xWhen the vehicle speed is mainly below
about 43 mph/70 km/h.'xWith a sporty driving style, such as during
rapid acceleration or when cornering fast.'xIn active driving situations, such as when
changing lanes frequently.'xWhen the road surface is poor.'xIn the event of strong side winds.
The system is reset approx. 45 minutes after parking the vehicle, for instance in the case of a
break during longer trips on highways.

DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsVehiclefeaturesandoptions
This chapter describes all standard, country-spejcific and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features that are not necessarilyavailable in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selectedoptions or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Anti-lockBrakingSystem ABS
ABS prevents locking of the wheels during brakjing.
The vehicle maintains its steering power even during full brake applications, thus increasing acjtive safety.
ABS is operational every time you start the enj gine.
Brakeassistant
When you apply the brakes rapidly, this system
automatically boosts the vehicle braking capabilj
ity to the furthest possible extent. It reduces the
braking distance to a minimum during emerj gency stop. This system utilizes all of the capajbilities provided by the Antilock Brake SystemABS.
Do not reduce the pressure on the brake pedal
for the duration of the emergency stop.
DSCDynamicStability
Control
Concept
Within the physical limits, the system helps to keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducingengine speed and by applying brakes to the indijvidual wheels.
Generalinformation DSC detects the following unstable driving conjditions, for instance:
'xFishtailing, which can lead to oversteering.'xLoss of traction of the front wheels, whichcan lead to understeering.
Dynamic Traction Control DTC, refer topage 171, is a version of the DSC where forward
momentum is optimized.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the driverss personal judgment in assessing the
traffic situation. Based on the limits of the sysj tem, it cannot independently react to all trafficsituations. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust
driving style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic closely and actively intervene where approprij
ate.
WARNING
When driving with a roof load, for instance with
roof-mounted luggage rack, the vehicle's cenj
ter of gravity is higher, which increases the risk of the vehicle tipping in critical driving situaj
tions. There is a risk of accidents or risk of
