DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsVehiclefeaturesandoptionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable country provisions
must be observed.
Anti-lockBrakingSystem
ABS
ABS prevents locking of the wheels during
braking.
The vehicle maintains its steering power even during full brake applications, thus increasing
active safety.
ABS is operational every time you start the enj gine.
Brakeassistant When you apply the brakes rapidly, this systemautomatically produces the greatest possible
braking force boost. It reduces the braking disj
tance to a minimum during emergency stop.
This system utilizes all of the benefits provided
by ABS.
Do not reduce the pressure on the brake pedal
for the duration of the emergency stop.
Adaptivebrakeassistant In combination with the Active Cruise Control,
this system ensures that the brakes respond
even more rapidly when braking in critical sitj
uations.Drive-offassistant
Concept
This system supports driving off on inclines. The parking brake is not required.
Drivingoffwiththedrive-offassistant1.Hold the vehicle in place with the foot
brake.2.Release the foot brake and drive off withj
out delay.
After the foot brake is released, the vehicle is held in place for approx. 2 seconds.
Depending on the vehicle load, the vehicle may roll back slightly.
DSCDynamicStability
Control
Concept
Within the physical limits, the system helps to keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducjing engine speed and by applying brakes tothe individual wheels.
Generalinformation Dynamic Stability Control detects, e.g., the foljlowing unstable driving conditions:
'yFishtailing, which can lead to oversteering.'yLoss of traction of the front wheels, which
can lead to understeering.
Dynamic Traction Control DTC, refer to
page 142, is a version of the DSC where forj
ward momentum is optimized.

SafetyinformationWARNING
The system does not release from the
personal responsibility to correctly assess the
traffic situation. Based on the limits of the sysj tem, it cannot independently react to all trafficsituations. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust
the driving style to the traffic conditions. Watch
traffic closely and actively intervene in the rej
spective situations.'

When DTC is activated, the vehicle has maxijmum traction. Driving stability is limited duringacceleration and when driving in curves.
Therefore, drive with appropriate caution.
You may find it useful to briefly activate DTC
under the following special circumstances:'yWhen driving in slush or on uncleared,
snow-covered roads.'yWhen freeing vehicle from deep snow or driving off from loose ground.'yWhen driving with snow chains.

xDrive xDrive is the all-wheel-drive system of your vej
hicle. Concerted action by the xDrive and DSC further optimize traction and driving dynamics. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system variably disjtributes the drive forces to the front and rear
axles as demanded by the driving situation and
road surface.
HDCHillDescentControl
Concept
HDC is a downhill driving assistant that autoj matically controls vehicle speed on steep downhill gradients. Without applying the
brakes, the vehicle moves at slightly more than walking speed. It the brakes are actively apj
plied, the system distributes force according to
the traction.
Vehicle stability and maneuverability are imj proved on downhill gradients.
Hill Descent Control can be activated at speeds below approx. 22 mph/35 km/h. When
driving downhill, the vehicle reduces its speed
and then keeps its speed constant.
Only use HDC in low gears or in selector lever
position D or R.

speed
Specify desired speed in the range from apj
prox. 4 mph/6 km/h to approx. 15 mph/25 km/h
using the rocker switch of the cruise control on
the steering wheel. Vehicle speed can be
changed by lightly accelerating.'yPress the rocker switch up to the point of
resistance: the speed increases gradually.'yPress up the rocker switch past the point

A message is displayed in the instrument clusj
ter. HDC is not available, e.g., due to elevated brake temperatures.
AdaptiveDrive
Theconcept
Adaptive Drive includes the following systems:'yDynamic Drive, refer to page 144.'yDynamic Damping Control, refer to
page 144.
The system increases driving stability and drivj
ing comfort.
DynamicDrive TheconceptThe system reduces the lateral inclination of
the vehicle that occurs during rapid driving in curves or during quick evasive maneuvers.
Driving stability and driving comfort are inj creased under all driving conditions. The sysj
tem utilizes active stabilizer bars on the front
and rear axles that react immediately to all drivj ing situations.
Programs The system offers two different programs.
Select the programs via the Driving Dynamics
Control.
SPORT Sporty tuning for greater driving agility.
COMFORT
Comfort-oriented tuning for optimal comfort.

IntegralActiveSteering Concept
Integral Active Steering is a combination of Acj
tive Steering and rear axle steering.
Active Steering varies the steering angle of the
wheels in relation to the steering wheel movej
ment as a function of the speed.
At speeds up to approx. 37 mph/60 km/h, e.g.,
in curves, the steering angle is increased, i.e.,
steering becomes more direct.
The rear axle steering acts to increase maneuj
verability by turning the rear wheels slightly in a direction opposite to the front wheels.
At higher speeds, the steering angle is increasjingly reduced.
The rear wheels are turned to the same angle
as the front wheels.
In critical situations, Integral Active Steering
can specifically steer the front and rear wheels
to stabilize the vehicle before the driver interj venes, e.g., when braking where road condijtions differ on the left and right sides of the vej
hicle.
InitializingIn rare cases, it may become necessary to initij
alize the Integral Active Steering.
The warning lamp lights up. A CheckControl message is displayed.1.With the engine running, turn the steeringwheel all the way to the left and right sevj
eral times in a uniform manner until the warning lamp disappears.2.Have the system checked if the warning
lamp does not go out after moving the
steering wheel approx. 6 times or if the
steering wheel is at an angle.
Usingsnowchains
Generalinformation
When snow chains are in use, refer to
page 236, rear wheel steering is deactivated.
Programs The system offers several different programs.
Select the programs via the Driving Dynamics
Control, refer to page 146.
SPORT Consistently sporty tuning of the Integral Acj
tive Steering for greater driving agility.
Malfunction
In the event of a malfunction, the steering
wheel must be turned further, while the vehicle responds more sensitively to steering wheelmovements in the higher speed range.
The stability-enhancing intervention may be deactivated.
Proceed cautiously and drive defensively. Have the system checked.

Concept
Using this system, a desired speed and a disj
tance to a vehicle ahead can be adjusted using the buttons on the steering wheel.
The system maintains the desired speed on clear roads. For this purpose, the vehicle acj
celerates or brakes automatically.
If a vehicle is driving ahead of you, the system
adjusts the speed of your vehicle within the
given system limits so that the set distance to
the vehicle ahead is maintained.
The distance can be adjusted in several steps.
For safety reasons, it depends on the respecj tive speed.
If the vehicle ahead of you brakes to a halt, and
then proceeds to drive again within a brief pej
riod, the system is able to detect this within the given system limits.
