GeneralinformationActive Protection consists of various PreCrash
functions, which can vary depending on the
equipment.
The system is used to detect certain critical drivj
ing situations that might lead to an accident. This
includes the following critical driving situations:'xEmergency stop.'xSevere understeering.'xSevere oversteering.
Certain functions of several systems can - within
the system limits - lead to Active Protection trigj gering:
'xApproach control warning with braking funcj
tion: automatic brake intervention.'xApproach control warning with braking funcj
tion: brake booster.'xNight Vision with pedestrian and animal dej tection: brake booster.'xRear collision prevention: detection of immijnent rear collisions.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the
driverss personal judgment. Due to the system
limits, critical situation could not be detected reliably or in time. There is a risk of an accident.
Adjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watch
traffic closely and actively intervene where apj propriate.
Function
When the safety belt is fastened, the driver's and
passenger's belt straps are automatically tightj
ened once after driving away.
In accident-critical situations, the following indij
vidual functions become active as needed:
'xAutomatic pretensioning of the front safety
belts.'xAutomatic window closing up to a narrow gap.'xAutomatic closing of the glass sunroof, inj
cluding sun protection.'xFor vehicles equipped with comfort seats in
the front: automatic positioning of the backj
rest for the front passenger seat.
After a critical driving situation without an accij dent, the front safety belts are loosened again.
If the belt tension does not loosen automatically,
stop the vehicle and unbuckle the safety belt usj ing the red button in the buckle. Fasten the
safety belt before continuing on your trip.
All other systems can be restored to the desired
setting.
PostCrashmiBrake
Concept
In the event of an accident, the system can bring
the vehicle to a halt automatically without interj
vention by the driver in certain situations. This
can reduce the risk of a further collision and the
consequences thereof.
Atstandstill
After coming to a halt, the brake is released autoj matically.
Hardervehiclebraking
It can be necessary to bring the vehicle in certain
situations to a halt quicker.
To do this, for a short time the braking pressure
applied when stepping on the brake pedal must
be higher than the braking pressure achieved by
the automatic braking function. This interrupts
automatic braking.

Interruptingautomaticbraking
It can be necessary to interrupt automatic brakj
ing in certain situations, for instance for an evaj sive maneuver.
Interrupt automatic braking:'xBy pressing the brake pedal.'xBy pressing the accelerator pedal.
Alertnessassistant
Concept
The system can detect decreasing alertness or
fatigue of the driver during long, monotonous trips, for instance on highways. In this situation, it
is recommended that the driver takes a break.
Safetyinformation
WARNING
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the driverss personal judgment in assessing one's physical state. An increasing lack of alertness orfatigue may not be detected or not be detectedin time. There is a risk of an accident. Make
sure that the driver is rested and alert. Adjust driving style to traffic conditions.
Function
The system is switched on each time drive-ready
state is switched on.
After travel has begun, the system monitors cerj
tain aspects of the driver's behavior, so that dej
creasing alertness or fatigue can be detected.
This procedure takes the following criteria into
account:
'xPersonal driving style, for instance steering behavior.'xDriving conditions, for instance length of trip.Starting at approx. 43 mph/70 km/h, the systemis active and can also display a recommendation
to take a break.
Breakrecommendation
Switchingon/off,adjusting The alertness assistant is active automatically
with each switching on of drive-ready state and
can thus display a break recommendation.
The break recommendation can also be
switched on or off and adjusted via iDrive.
Via iDrive:1."My Vehicle"2."Vehicle settings"3."Driver attention control"4.Select desired setting:'x"Off": no break recommendation is made.'x"Standard": the break recommendation is
made with a defined value.'x"Sensitive": the break recommendation is
issued earlier.
Display
If the driver becomes less alert or fatigued, a
message is displayed in the Control Display with
the recommendation to take a break.
During the display, the following settings can be
selected:
'x"Do not ask again"'x"Places to stop"'x"Remind me later"
The break recommendation is repeated after
20 minutes.
After a break, another recommendation to take a
break cannot be displayed until after approxij mately 45 minutes.

SystemlimitsThe function may be limited in the following sitj
uations, for instance and will either output an inj
correct warning or no warning at all:'xWhen the clock is set incorrectly.'xWhen the vehicle speed is mainly below
about 43 mph/70 km/h.'xWith a sporty driving style, such as during
rapid acceleration or when cornering fast.'xIn active driving situations, such as when
changing lanes frequently.'xWhen the road surface is poor.'xIn the event of strong side winds.
The system is reset approx. 45 minutes after parking the vehicle, for instance in the case of a
break during longer trips on highways.

DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsVehiclefeaturesandoptions
This chapter describes all standard, country-spejcific and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features that are not necessarilyavailable in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selectedoptions or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Anti-lockBrakingSystem ABS
ABS prevents locking of the wheels during brakjing.
The vehicle maintains its steering power even during full brake applications, thus increasing acjtive safety.
ABS is operational every time you start the enj gine.
Brakeassistant
When you apply the brakes rapidly, the system
automatically produces the greatest possible braking force boost. It reduces the braking disjtance to a minimum during emergency stop.
This system utilizes all of the capabilities proj
vided by the Antilock Brake System ABS.
Do not reduce the pressure on the brake pedal for the duration of the emergency stop.
Adaptivebrakeassistant
In combination with Active Cruise Control, this
system ensures that the brakes respond even more rapidly when braking in critical situations.
Drive-offassistant
Concept
This system supports driving off on uphill grades.
Drivingaway
1.Hold the vehicle in place with the foot brake.2.Release the foot brake and drive off withoutdelay.
After the foot brake is released, the vehicle is
held in place for approx. 2 seconds.
Depending on the vehicle loading or when a
trailer is used, the vehicle may roll back slightly.
DSCDynamicStability Control
Concept
Within the physical limits, the system helps to
keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducing
engine speed and by braking the individual
wheels.
Generalinformation DSC detects the following unstable driving conj
ditions, for instance:
'xFishtailing, which can lead to oversteering.'xLoss of traction of the front wheels, which can lead to understeering.Seite 199DrivingstabilitycontrolsystemsCONTROLS199
