SafetyVehiclefeaturesandoptions
This chapter describes all standard, country- specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., dueto the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable country provisions
must be observed.
Airbags

Protectiveaction
Airbags are not triggered in every impact situaj tion, e.g., in less severe accidents or rear-end
collisions.

WARNING
If the seat position is incorrect or the dej
ployment area of the airbags is impaired, the airbag system cannot protect as intended or
may cause additional injuries due to triggering.
There is a risk of injuries or danger to life. Folj

CorrectfunctionWhen the ignition is switched on, the
warning lamp in the instrument cluster lights up briefly and thereby indicates
the operational readiness of the entire airbag
system and the belt tensioner.

ignition is turned on.'yThe warning lamp lights up continuously.
Automaticdeactivationofthefront-
seatpassengerairbags
Concept
The system reads if the front passenger seat is
occupied by measuring the human body's rej sistance.
Front, knee and side airbag on the front pasj
senger's side are either activated or deactij
vated.
Generalinformation Before transporting a child on the front pasj
senger seat, refer to the safety notes and inj structions for children on the front passengerseat, see Children.
Safetyinformation WARNING
To ensure the front-seat passenger airj
bag function, the system must be able to dej
tect whether a person is sitting in the front passenger seat. The entire seat cushion areamust be used for this purpose. There is a risk
of injuries or danger to life. Make sure that the front passenger keeps his or her feet in the
floor area.'

'yThe indicator lamp lights up
when a child is properly
seated in a child restraint fixj
ing system or when the seat
is empty. The airbags on the
front passenger side are not
activated.'yThe indicator lamp does not light up when, e.g., a correctly seated person of sufficient
size is detected on the seat. The airbags
on the front passenger side are activated.
Detectedchildseats
The system generally detects children seatedin a child seat, particularly in child seats rejquired by NHTSA at the point in time when thevehicle was manufactured. After installing achild seat, make sure that the indicator lampfor the front-seat passenger airbags lights up.
This indicates that the child seat has been dej tected and the front-seat passenger airbags
are not activated.
Strengthofthedriver'sandfront-seat
passengerairbag
The explosive power that activates driver's/
front passenger's airbags very much depends
on the positions of the driver's/front passengj er's seat.
To maintain the accuracy of this function over
the long term, calibrate the front seats as soon
as a respective message appears on the Conj
trol Display.
Calibratingthefrontseats WARNING
There is a risk of jamming when moving
the seats. There is a risk of injury or risk of
property damage. Make sure that the area of movement of the seat is clear prior to any adjjustment.'

On the Control Display:1."Vehicle info"2."Vehicle status"3. "Flat Tire Monitor (FTM)"
The status is displayed.
Initialization
When initializing, the set tire inflation presj
sures serve as reference values in order to dej
tect a flat tire. Initialization is started by conj
firming the tire inflation pressures.
Do not initialize the system when driving with
snow chains.
On the Control Display:
1."Vehicle info"2."Vehicle status"3. "Perform reset"4.Start the engine but do not drive off.5.Start the initialization with "Perform reset".6.Drive away.
The initialization is completed while driving, which can be interrupted at any time.
The initialization automatically continues when
driving resumes.
Indicationofaflattire The yellow warning lamp lights up. A
Check Control message is displayed.
There is a flat tire or a major loss in tire
inflation pressure.
1.Reduce your speed and stop cautiously. Avoid sudden braking and steering maneujvers.2.Check whether the vehicle is fitted with
normal tires or run-flat tires.
Run-flat tires, refer to page 222, are laj
beled with a circular symbol containing the letters RSC marked on the tire's sidewall.WARNING
A damaged regular tire with low or missj
ing tire inflation pressure impacts handling, such as steering and braking response. Run-
flat tires can maintain limited stability. There is
a risk of an accident. Do not continue driving if the vehicle is not equipped with run-flat tires.
Follow the information on run-flat tires and
continued driving with these tires.'

center or another qualified service center
or repair shop.2.Repair the flat tire, e.g., with a tire repair kit
or by changing the tire.
Run-flattires
Maximumspeed
You may continue driving with a damaged tire
at speeds up to 50 mph/80 km/h.
Continueddrivingwithaflattire
If continuing to drive with a damaged tire:
1.Avoid sudden braking and steering maneuj vers.2.Do not exceed a speed of 50 mph/80 km/h.3.Check the air pressure in all four tires atthe next opportunity.
If the tire inflation pressure in all four tires
is correct, the Flat Tire Monitor may not
have been initialized. In this case, initialize
the system.
Possible driving distance with complete loss of tire inflation pressure:
The possible driving distance with a flat tire
depends on cargo load, driving style and road
conditions.
A vehicle with an average load has a possible driving range of approx. 50 miles/80 km.
A vehicle with a damaged tire reacts differj
ently, e.g., it has reduced lane stability during
braking, a longer braking distance and different
self-steering properties. Adjust your driving
style accordingly. Avoid abrupt steering maj
neuvers or driving over obstacles, e.g., curbs,
potholes, etc.
Because the possible driving distance dej
pends on how the vehicle is used during the
trip, the actual distance may be shorter or lonj
ger depending on the driving speed, road conj
ditions, external temperature, cargo load, etc.
WARNING
Your vehicle handles differently when a
run-flat tire is damaged and has low or missing
tire inflation pressure, e.g., your lane stability is
reduced when braking, braking distances are longer and the self-steering properties will
change. There is a risk of an accident.
Drive moderately and do not exceed a speed of
50 mph/80 km/h.'

Always use wheels with TPM electronics to
ensure that the system will operate properly.
Statusdisplay
The current status of the Tire Pressure Monij
tor TPM can be displayed on the Control Disj
play, e.g., whether or not the TPM is active.
On the Control Display:1."Vehicle info"2."Vehicle status"3. "Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM)"
The status is displayed.
Statuscontroldisplay Tire and system status are indicated by the
color of the wheels and a SMS text message on the Control Display.

lated to the tire inflation pressures stored durj ing the last reset.
Onewheelisyellow A flat tire or major drop in inflation pressure in
the indicated tire.
Allwheelsareyellow A flat tire or major drop in inflation pressure in
several tires.
Graywheels The system cannot detect a flat tire. Reasons
for this may be:
'yThe system is being reset.'yMalfunction.
Statusinformation
The status control display additionally showsthe current tire inflation pressures and, dejpending on the model, tire temperatures. Itshows the actual values read; they may vary
depending on driving style or weather condij
tions.
Resettingthesystem Reset the system after each adjustment of the
tire inflation pressure and after every tire or wheel change.
On the Control Display and on the vehicle:1."Vehicle info"2."Vehicle status"3. "Perform reset"4.Start the engine but do not drive off.5.Reset tire inflation pressure: "Perform reset".6.Drive away.
The wheels are displayed in gray and the stajtus is displayed.
After driving faster than 19 mph/30 km/h for a
short period, the set tire inflation pressures are
accepted as reference values. The reset is completed automatically while driving.
After a successfully completed Reset, the
wheels on the Control Display are shown in green and "Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM)active" is displayed.
You may interrupt this trip at any time. When you continue the reset resumes automatically.
Lowtirepressuremessage The yellow warning lamp lights up. A
Check Control message is displayed.
'yThere is a flat tire or a major loss in
tire inflation pressure.'yNo reset was performed for the system.
The system therefore issues a warning
based on the tire inflation pressures before
the last reset.1.Reduce your speed and stop cautiously. Avoid sudden braking and steering maneujvers.Seite 119SafetyControls119
