Generalinformation
READY is displayed in the instrument cluster. If necessary, the combustion engine starts auto#jmatically.
The combustion engine is also stopped during
the trip when rolling without acceleration or braking. This driving condition, in which the ve#j
hicle is traveling without power and energy re#j
covery is not active, is referred to as coasting,
refer to page 113.
The combustion engine is not switched off au#j
tomatically in the following situations:'yThe combustion engine is not at operating
temperature.'yThe transmission selector lever is in posi#j tion M/S.'yHigh-voltage battery is heavily discharged
or vehicle electrical system is heavily bur#j
dened.'yHigh stress of the automatic climate con#j trol in the heating or cooling phase.'yThe engine compartment lid is unlocked.'yThe vehicle is being optimized for the cur#jrent driving style, e.g., during the break-in
period or after a service appointment.'yThe hybrid system is malfunctioning.
Safetymode
An automatically stopped combustion engine does not start independently:
'yWith the driver's door open, if neither the
brake pedal nor the accelerator pedal is de#j
pressed, and the driver's safety belt is not
fastened.'yWhen the hood is unlocked.
The indicator lights come on. The combustion engine can only be started via the Start/Stop
button.
Switchingoffthevehicleduringan
automaticenginestop
During an automatic engine stop, the vehicle
can be switched off permanently, for instance
when leaving it.1.Press the Start/Stop button.'yThe standby state is activated.'yThe Auto Start/Stop function is deacti#j
vated.'ySelector lever position P is engaged
automatically.2.Set the parking brake.
Malfunction
The Auto Start/Stop function no longer switches off the combustion engine automati#jcally in the event of a malfunction. A messageis displayed. It is possible to continue driving.
Have the system checked.
Electricdriving:ePOWER
Generalinformation While driving electrically with ePOWER, the ve#j
hicle is powered by the electric motor. The system runs automatically.
Depending on the charge state of the high-
voltage battery, maximum speed, the vehicle's
capacity to accelerate, and range can vary.
For electrical driving, certain conditions, refer
to page 112, must be satisfied.
Displays of the hybrid system, refer to
page 131.
Safetyinformation WARNING
When driving in electric mode, pedes#j
trians and other traffic might pay less attention
to the vehicle due to the lack of engine noise.
There is a risk of an accident. Adjust driving

BATTERYCONTROL
Generalinformation A certain charge state of thehigh-voltage battery can be
maintained with BATTERY
CONTROL. This charge state can be adjusted. The electric
range can be conserved in this way for a later
point in the trip, for instance.
If the current charge state is too low, the bat#j
tery is charged during the trip. This charging
process increases the average fuel consump#j
tion.
ActivatingBATTERYCONTROL Press the button repeatedly until
BATTERY CONTROL is displayed in
the instrument cluster.
The BATTERY CONTROL sym#jbol is displayed in the instru#j ment cluster.
When pressing the button, the current eDRIVE
setting is graphically displayed on the Control Display.
Adjustingthechargestate
The charge state can be set in various ways.
Using the eDRIVE button:1.Press the eDRIVE button repeatedly until BATTERY CONTROL is displayed in the
instrument cluster and on the Control Dis#j
play.2.Select "Set target value" on the Control Display.3."Target value:": set the desired value.
Using iDrive:
1."My Vehicle"2."Vehicle settings"3."BATTERY CONTROL"4."Target value:"5.Set the desired value.
The charge state to be conserved is displayedas a percentage value on the Control Display.
A marking is set in the instrument cluster for the adjusted value in the charge state indicator
of the high-voltage battery, refer to page 131.
AutoStart/Stopfunction,coasting
Concept
The combustion engine is automatically stop#j ped and disengaged from the drivetrain. This driving condition of rolling is referred to ascoasting.
After coasting, the combustion engine or elec#j
tric motor provides the necessary drive power
automatically again, depending on the hybrid
mode.
Functionalrequirements
Coasting is possible under the following condi#j tions:
'yThe high-voltage battery is sufficiently
charged.'yTransmission position D is engaged.'yThe drive system is at operating tempera#j ture.'yIn ECO PRO: mode, when coasting, with#j
out operating the brake, at speeds below
100 mph, approx. 160 km/h.
Acousticpedestrianprotection
Concept
Depending on the country-specific version, the
system generates a continuous driving noise
at standstill with the drive-ready state acti#j vated and during electric driving up to approx.
20 mph/30 km/h.
A speaker system broadcasts the noise to the
surroundings.

As a result, other traffic participants, e.g., pe#jdestrians or cyclists, can better perceive thevehicle.
Drivingwiththecombustion
engine:POWER
Concept
The combustion engine provides the main
drive power to move the vehicle. If necessary, the high-voltage battery is charged at the
same time.
Functionalrequirements
Automaticstartingwhiledriving
The combustion engine is automatically
started under the following conditions while
driving:'yDuring intense accelerations or on uphill
grades.'yBy pressing the accelerator pedal beyond
the resistance point at the full throttle posi#j tion, kickdown.'yThe high-voltage battery has an insuffi#jcient charge.'ySelector lever position M/S is engaged.'yAdapting to the course of the road when
destination guidance is activated.'ySystem-related requirement for hybrid
components.
Automaticswitchingoffwhiledriving
When reducing speed, the combustion engineis switched off when the conditions for electricdriving, refer to page 112, are met.
Assistancefromtheelectric
motor
Concept
The combustion engine provides the main
drive power to move the vehicle.
The electric motor provides assistance as
needed with additional propulsive power.
eASSIST
During normal vehicle operation, the electric motor assists the combustion engine, depend#j ing on the situation.
eBOOST Accelerating quickly, such as when passing,
requires the maximum available power from the electric motor. To do this, apply extra force
to the accelerator pedal.
Energyrecovery:CHARGE
Concept
The hybrid system makes it possible to con#j
vert kinetic energy into electrical power when
braking and coasting. This recovered energy
charges the high-voltage battery. If necessary,
this stored electrical energy is output to the
electric motor.
Generalinformation Depending on the settings of the Driving Dy#jnamics Control, refer to page 126, the high-
voltage battery is charged at different speeds and the vehicle decelerated differently while
coasting.
Functionalrequirements
The following conditions must be met to re#j
cover kinetic energy:'yThe vehicle is moving.'ySelector lever position D, M/S is set.Seite 114ControlsDriving114

Parkingbrake
Concept
The parking brake is used to prevent the vehi#j cle from rolling when it is parked.
Safetyinformation WARNING
An unsecured vehicle can begin to move
and possibly roll away. There is a risk of an ac#j
cident. Before exiting, secure the vehicle
against rolling.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured against rolling away, observe the following:
'ySet the parking brake.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the
curb.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
also secure the vehicle, e.g., with a wheel chock.'

AutomaticHold
Concept
This system assists the driver by automatically setting and releasing the brake, such as when
moving in stop-and-go traffic.
The vehicle is automatically held in place when
it is stationary.
On inclines, the system prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when driving off.
Generalinformation
Under the following conditions, the parking
brake is automatically engaged:
'yDrive-ready state is switched off.'yThe driver's door is opened while the vehi#j cle is stationary.'yThe moving vehicle is brought to a stand#j
still using the parking brake.
