Approach control warning with
City light braking function
Concept
The system can help prevent accidents. If an acj
cident cannot be prevented, the system will help reduce the collision speed.
The system sounds a warning before an immij
nent collision and activates brakes independj
ently, if needed.
The automatic braking intervention is done with
limited force and duration.
A camera in the area of the interior mirror conj
trols the system.
The approach control warning is available even if
cruise control has been deactivated.
With the vehicle approaching another vehicle inj
tentionally, the approach control warning and
braking are delayed in order to avoid false sysj
tem reactions.
General information
The system warns at two levels of an imminent
danger of collision at speeds from approx.
3 mph/5 km/h. Time of warnings may vary with
the current driving situation.
Appropriate braking kicks in at speeds of up to
35 mph/60 km/h.
Detection range
Objects that the system can detect are taken
into account.

PrewarningThis warning is issued, for instance when there is
the impending danger of a collision or the disj tance to the vehicle ahead is too small.
The driver must intervene actively when there is
a prewarning.
Acute warning with braking function
Acute warning is displayed in case of the immij
nent danger of a collision when the vehicle apj
proaches another object at a high differential
speed.
The driver must intervene actively when there is
an acute warning. If necessary, the driver is asj sisted by a minor automatic braking intervention
in a possible risk of collision.
Acute warnings can also be triggered without
previous forewarning.
Braking intervention
The warning prompts the driver to react. During
a warning, the maximum braking force is used.
Prerequisite for the brake booster is sufficiently quick and hard stepping on the brake pedal. If
there is a risk of collision, the system may assist
with braking. When the vehicle is traveling at a
low speed, the vehicle may come to a complete
stop.
The braking intervention occurs only if vehicle
stability has not been restricted, for instance by
deactivating the DSC Dynamic Stability Control.
The braking intervention can be interrupted by
stepping on the accelerator pedal or by actively moving the steering wheel.
Object detection can be restricted. Follow the limitations of the detection range and functional
restrictions.System limits
Safety information
WARNING
The system can react not at all, too late, incorj
rectly, or without justification due to the system
limits. There is a risk of accidents or risk of damage to property. Follow the information rejgarding the system limits and actively intervene
if needed.
Detection range
The system's detection potential is limited.
Thus, a system reaction might not come or
might come late.
E.g., the following situations may not be dej tected:
'xSlow moving vehicles when you approach them at high speed.'xVehicles that suddenly swerve in front of you,
or sharply decelerating vehicles.'xVehicles with an unusual rear appearance.'xTwo-wheeled vehicles ahead of you.
Functional limitations
The system may not be fully functional in the foljlowing situations:
'xIn heavy fog, wet conditions, or snowfall.'xIn tight curves.'xIf the driving stability control systems are dejactivated, for instance DSC OFF.'xIf the field of view of the camera in the mirroris dirty or obscured.'xUp to 10 seconds after drive-ready state isestablished.'xDuring calibration of the camera immediately
after vehicle delivery.Seite 144CONTROLSSafety144

'xIf there are constant blinding effects because
of oncoming light, for instance from the sun low in the sky.
Warning sensitivity
The more sensitive the warning settings are, for
example the warning time, the more warnings are
displayed. Therefore, there may also be an exj
cess of premature or unjustified warnings and rej
actions.
Person warning with City light braking function
Concept
The system can help prevent accidents with pej
destrians.
When driving at city speeds, the system will isj sue a warning if there is imminent risk of a collijsion with pedestrians, and support this with alight braking function.
The camera in the area of the interior mirror conj
trols the system.
General information
With sufficient brightness, the system warns
about possible collision danger with pedestrians
starting at approx. 6 mph/10 km/h to approx.
35 mph/60 km/h and assists with braking before a collision.
The system reacts to people who are within the
detection range of the system.
Detection range
The detection area in front of the vehicle is divj ided into two areas:
'xCentral area, arrow 1, directly in front of the
vehicle.'xExpanded area, arrow 2, to the right and left of the central area.
A collision is imminent if pedestrians are located
within the central area. A warning is issued about pedestrians who are located within the extended
area only if they are moving in the direction of the central area.

Concept
Additional brake lights indicate emergency brakj
ing to the traffic behind. This can reduce the risk
of a rear-end collision.
General information
'xDuring normal braking or decelerating, the
top brake lights light up.'xDuring heavy brake application, the lower
brake lights additionally light up.
PostCrash m iBrake
Concept
In the event of an accident, the system can bring the vehicle to a halt automatically without interjvention by the driver in certain situations. Thiscan reduce the risk of a further collision and the
consequences thereof.

Harder vehicle brakingIt can be necessary to bring the vehicle in certain
situations to a halt quicker.
To do this, for a short time the braking pressure applied when stepping on the brake pedal mustbe higher than the braking pressure achieved by
the automatic braking function. This interrupts
automatic braking.
Interrupting automatic braking
It can be necessary to interrupt automatic brakj
ing in certain situations, for example for an evaj
sive maneuver.
Interrupt automatic braking:'xBy pressing the brake pedal.'xBy pressing the accelerator pedal.
At standstill
After coming to a halt, the brake is released autoj
matically.

Driving stability control systemsVehicle features and options
This chapter describes all standard, country-spej
cific and optional features offered with the series.
It also describes features that are not necessarily
available in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selected
options or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Anti-lock Braking System ABS
ABS prevents locking of the wheels during brakj ing.
The vehicle maintains its steering power even during full brake applications, thus increasing acjtive safety.
ABS is ready when vehicle is ready to drive.
Brake assistant
When you apply the brakes rapidly, this system
automatically boosts the vehicle braking capabilj ity to the furthest possible extent. It reduces the
braking distance to a minimum during emerj gency stop. This system utilizes all of the capajbilities provided by the Antilock Brake SystemABS.
Do not reduce the pressure on the brake pedal for the duration of the emergency stop.
Energy recovery
General information
In the event of danger, such as with locked
wheels, energy recovery is reduced in order to
prevent unstable driving situations.
Safety information
WARNING
Without energy recovery, there is no braking power of the electric motor available. The vehij
cle could roll further than anticipated. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust driving style to trafficconditions. Watch traffic closely and actively inj
tervene where appropriate.
DSC Dynamic Stability Control
Concept
Within the physical limits, the system helps to keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducing
engine speed and by applying brakes to the indij vidual wheels.
General information
DSC detects the following unstable driving conj
ditions, for instance:
'xFishtailing, which can lead to oversteering.'xLoss of traction of the front wheels, which can lead to understeering.
Dynamic Traction Control DTC, refer topage 150, is a version of the DSC where forward
momentum is optimized.
Safety information
WARNING
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the driverss personal judgment in assessing the traffic situation. Based on the limits of the sysjtem, it cannot independently react to all trafficsituations. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust
driving style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic

Indicator/warning lights The indicator light flashes: DSC controlsthe drive and braking forces.
The indicator light lights up: DSC has
malfunctioned.
DTC Dynamic Traction Control
Concept
DTC is a version of the DSC Dynamic Stability
Control where forward momentum is optimized.
The system ensures maximum headway on spej
cial road conditions or loose road surfaces, for inj
stance unplowed snowy roads, but with somej
what limited driving stability.
When DTC is activated, the vehicle has maxij
mum traction. Driving stability is limited during
acceleration and when driving in curves.
Drive carefully.
You may find it useful to briefly activate DTC unj
der the following special circumstances:
'xWhen driving in slush or on uncleared, snow- covered roads.'xWhen driving off from deep snow or looseground.'xWhen driving with snow chains.
