BMW eDRIVEVehicle features and options
This chapter describes all standard, country-spej
cific and optional features offered with the series.
It also describes features that are not necessarily
available in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selected
options or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
BMW eDRIVE
Special features of the BMW i High-voltage system
This BMW i is an electric vehicle. The vehicle features a high-voltage system that consists of
an electric motor and a high-voltage battery
among other things.
Optionally, the vehicle has a combustion engine
that generates electrical energy via a generator and thereby increases the range. This combusjtion engine is called the Range Extender.
Carbon body
The vehicle consists of the functional units:
'xDrive module of aluminum.'xLife module of carbon fiber reinforced plastic,
CFRP.Overview1Vehicle battery2Fuel filler flap3High-voltage battery4Charging socket5Drive unit
Concept
The vehicle can be operated emissions free usj ing its electrical drive system.
The special high-voltage battery supplies the
electric motor as well as the comfort features with power.
The high-voltage battery is charged via a chargj ing cable, for instance when parked or while drivj
ing by energy recovery.
The vehicle can be charged very rapidly at spej
cial charging stations. Charging is also possible
at household power sockets.
On the go, the energy recovery ensures that only
little energy is lost when braking.
When the vehicle decelerates, the electric motor
acts as a generator and converts the kinetic enj ergy released into electric current.
As a result the high-voltage battery is partially rej
charged in order to reach maximum range.
An optional Range Extender can supply the drivesystem with power and thus increase the range
of the vehicle.

FunctionsElectric driving: eDRIVE
The vehicle is powered exclusively by the electric
motor. The accelerator pedal can be used not just for acceleration, but also for deceleration. When the vehicle decelerates, the electric motor
acts as a generator and charges the high-voltage battery. With a sensible driving style, this functioncan be used for especially efficient energy recovjery and comfortable driving, using just the accelj
erator pedal.
Acoustic pedestrian protection Depending on the country-specific version, thesystem generates a continuous driving noiseduring electric driving at low speeds.
Coasting
An especially efficient operating point is so- called coasting. In this case, the vehicle is deceljerated only by driving resistance and no energyflows between high-voltage battery and electricmotor. In order to coast, depress the accelerator
pedal far enough that the mark in the instrument cluster, refer to page 114, is exactly in the cenj
ter.
Energy recovery: CHARGE The high-voltage battery is charged while driving
through energy recovery.
The electric motor acts as a generator and conj
verts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electrij
cal energy.
Charging can take place in various situations while the vehicle is in motion:'xAs soon as the accelerator pedal is only
slightly depressed.'xDuring vehicle braking.
The mark in the instrument cluster is located within the CHARGE range.
Sensible driving and early speed reduction areimportant to make full use of the energy recovery
feature.
DisplayThe eDRIVE displays, refer to page 115, provide
information about the current state of the drive
and visualize the system's use in a diagram.
Maximize energy-saving driving and
range
Energy-saving driving is the basic prerequisite for
as large a range as possible. eDRIVE provides various functions that assist with an energy-savj
ing driving style and help to monitor the range, and if needed, to increase it. The following dejscriptions provide an overview of the availablefunctions and the personal measures.
Before driving
eDRIVE allows using the air conditioner even bej
fore driving off. The stationary climate control, rej
fer to page 178, provides more range than using
full air conditioning while driving.
Parked vehicle ventilation during the charging
process can provide maximum range when drivj
ing off.
Trip planning and special functions of thenavigation system
Several special functions of the navigation sysj tem support trip planning taking into account the
electric range:'xRange assistant, refer to Integrated Owner's
Manual, checks whether an entered navigaj
tion destination can be reached. If the range is not sufficient, various recommendations to
help increase the range are displayed autoj
matically, for instance an alternative ECO
PRO route is displayed.'xIntermodal routing or intermodal information,
refer to Integrated Owner's Manual, as routeSeite 64AT A GLANCEBMW eDRIVE64

criterion support trip planning using publictransportation.'xRange map indicates the action range on thenavigation map, refer to Integrated Owner'sManual.'xCharging assistant under Points of Interest innavigation, helps to find and possibly includea public charging station in the desired route, refer to Integrated Owner's Manual.

creasing the range.'xUse the eDRIVE system efficiently, refer to
page 198, for an optimized driving style.'xECO PRO driving style analysis, refer to

tential range, refer to page 117.

BMW i Remote app
A special BMW i Remote App allows you to conjtrol and display certain vehicle functions using a
smartphone.
Safety of the high-voltage system
Follow the information on safety, refer to
page 66.

Safety of the high-voltage systemSafety of the high-voltagesystem
Working on the vehicle
DANGER
Improperly executed work, in particular maintej
nance and repair on the high-voltage system and the carbon body as well as accessories retj
rofits, can lead to electric shock. There is a risk
of injury, fire and danger to life. The manufacj turer of your vehicle recommends that the work
on the vehicle, in particular maintenance and repair, be performed only by an authorized
BMW i dealerss service center or another qualij
fied service center or repair shop.
Contact with water
The high-voltage system is typically safe even in
the following example situations:
'xWater in the floor area, for instance after a rainstorm when the roof was kept open.'xVehicle is in water but only up to the allowed
height.'xFluid escapes in the cargo area.
Automatic deactivation
If an accident occurs, the high-voltage system is
switched off automatically to prevent risk of danj
ger to occupants and other traffic.
Read the information on What to do after an acj
cident, refer to page 257.

The remote controls hold information about rej quired maintenance. Service data in the remote control, refer to page 249.
Safety information
WARNING
People or animals in the vehicle can lock the doors from the inside and lock themselves in. In this case, the vehicle cannot be opened fromthe outside. There is a risk of injury. Take theremote control with you so that the vehicle canbe opened from the outside.
WARNING
Unlocking from the inside is only possible with special knowledge.
Persons who spend a lengthy time in the vehij
cle while being exposed to extreme temperaj tures are at risk of injury or death. Do not lock
the vehicle from the outside when there are
people in it.
WARNING
Unattended children or animals can cause the vehicle to move and endanger themselves and
traffic, for instance due to the following actions:
'xPressing the Start/Stop button.'xReleasing the parking brake.'xOpening and closing the doors or winj
dows.'xEngaging selector lever position N.'xUsing vehicle equipment.
There is a risk of accidents or injuries. Do not leave children or animals unattended in the vejhicle. Take the remote control with you whenexiting and lock the vehicle.
