the rainfall.
Generalinformation The sensor is located on the windshield, dijrectly in front of the interior mirror. Without the
rain sensor, the frequency of the wiper operaj
tion is preset.
Safetyinformation NOTE
If the rain sensor is activated, the wipers
can accidentally start moving in vehicle washes. There is a risk of property damage.Deactivate the rain sensor in vehicle washes.'

system
Safetyinformation WARNING
The washer fluid can freeze onto the winj
dow at low temperatures and obstruct the view. There is a risk of an accident. Only use
the washer systems, if the washer fluid cannot
freeze. Use antifreeze, if needed.'

FoldingdownthewipersAfter the wipers are folded back down, the
wiper system must be reactivated.1.Switch on the ignition.2.Push wiper lever down. Wipers return to their resting position and are ready again
for operation.
Washerfluid
Generalinformation All washer nozzles are supplied from one resjervoir.
Use a mixture of tap water, windshield washer
concentrate, and possibly antifreeze for the
windshield washer system.
Recommended minimum fill quantity:
0.2 US gal/1 liter.
Safetyinformation WARNING
Some antifreeze agents can contain
harmful substances and are flammable. There
is a risk of fire and a risk of injury. Observe the instructions on the containers. Keep antifreezeaway from ignition sources. Do not refill operj
ating materials into different bottles. Store opj
erating materials out of reach of children.
United States: The washer fluid mixture ratio is regulated by the U.S. EPA and many individualstates; do not exceed the allowable washer
fluid dilution ratio limits that apply. Follow the
usage instructions on the washer fluid conj
tainer.
Use of BMWss Windshield Washer Concenj trate or the equivalent is recommended.'

ManualtransmissionSafetyinformation WARNING
An unsecured vehicle can begin to move
and possibly roll away. There is a risk of an acj
cident. Before exiting, secure the vehicle
against rolling.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured against rolling away, observe the following:'ySet the parking brake.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the
curb.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
also secure the vehicle, e.g., with a wheel chock.'

Engagingaselectorleverposition
Press on the brake pedal and pull or push the selector lever in the corresponding direction.
As soon as the selector lever is released, it rej verts to the center position. In position R, theselector lever locks.
The engaged selector lever position is disj

If a selector lever position is engaged, the vehij
cle may start rolling, after the brake is released, e.g., on downhill slopes. Thus, drive off immej
diately after releasing the brake.
Use the Slow Speed Assistant for maneuverj
ing and during stop-and-go traffic.
LowSpeedAssistant
Concept
The Low Speed Assistant gives assistance at very low speeds. The vehicle moves at walkingspeed.
This can also be used for rocking the vehicle in
the snow. To do this, switch between reverse
gear and forward gear without stepping on the
brakes in the process.
Safetyinformation NOTE
When using the function and simultanej
ously stepping on the brake pedal for a longer
time, the transmission can overheat. There is a risk of property damage. When using the funcjtion, do not brake for a longer period.'

SisSequentialmodeUse the shift paddles or the selector lever to
upshift or downshift without letting off the gas.'yShortly before falling below a gear-dej
pendent minimum speed, the transmission
is automatically downshifted.'yUpshifting or downshifting is done only if
the rpm and vehicle speed are appropriate.
E.g., there is no downshifting if the engine speed is too high.'yKickdown: the lowest possible gear is sej
lected by simultaneously operating the
kickdown and the left shift paddle or selecj
tor lever.'yIt is also possible to start out in 2nd gear, e.g., on icy roads.
Switch to Drive mode: push selector lever in
D/S direction.
ReverseR Select only when the vehicle is stationary.
It is also possible to rock the vehicle up to 6 mph/10 km/h. To do this, switch betweenforward gear and reverse gear without stepjping on the brakes in the process.
NisNeutral
The vehicle may roll in selector lever posij
tion N, e.g., in vehicle washes, refer to page 218.
PPark
The drive wheels are blocked.
P is engaged automatically:
'yAfter the engine is switched off when the
vehicle is in radio-ready state, refer to page 64, or when the ignition is switched
off, refer to page 64, and when position R
or D is set.'yWith the ignition is off, if position N is set.Displaysintheinstrumentcluster
