switched on.
Systemlimits
The automatic driving lights control is no subj stitute for your individual judgement of when itis necessary to switch on the lights.
The sensors are unable, for instance, to recogj nise fog or hazy weather. In such situations,
switch on the lights manually to avoid any
safety risk.

AdaptiveHeadlightsPrinciple
Adaptive Headlights is a variable headlight
control system that makes it possible to illumij nate the road surface responsively.
General
The beams from the headlights follow the roadahead on in response to the steering angle andother parameters.
So as not to dazzle oncoming vehicles, the Adaptive Headlights do not swivel to the drivj
er's side when stationary.
Depending on equipment, the Adaptive Headj
lights comprise one or more systems:'yVariable light distribution, see page 122.
Activating
Switch position:

The Adaptive Headlights are active when the
engine is running.
Variablelightdistribution
Principle The variable light distribution enables even
better illumination of the carriageway.
General The light distribution is automatically adapted
to the speed.
Citylight The illuminated area of the low-beam headjlights is extended on the sides.
Motorwaybeampattern
The illumination width of the low-beam headj
lights is expanded.
Adaptiveheadlightbeam
throwadjustment
The adaptive headlight beam throw adjustj
ment compensates for acceleration and brakj
ing manoeuvres to prevent on-coming traffic
from being dazzled and to ensure optimum illuj
mination of the road.

High-beamassistance
Principle The high-beam assistance detects other road
users early on and activates or deactivates the
high beam depending on the traffic situation.
General High-beam assistance ensures that the high-
beam headlights are switched on when the traffic situation allows. The high-beam headj
lights are not switched on by the system in the low speed range.
The system responds to light from oncoming
traffic and traffic driving ahead of you, and to
adequate lighting, for example in built-up
areas.
The high-beam headlights can be switched on and off at any time as usual.
If the vehicle is equipped with dazzle-free high- beam assistance, the high-beam headlights
are not switched off for oncoming vehicles; inj
stead, the areas of the beam that would otherj
wise dazzle the oncoming traffic are masked
off. In this case, the blue indicator lamp continj
ues to illuminate.
Activating/deactivating
Switch position, depending on the equipment:
,
Press the button on the turn indicator lever.
The indicator lamp in the instrument cluster is illuminated if the low-beamheadlights switched on.
The system will switch automatically between
low-beam and high-beam headlights.
The blue indicator lamp in the instruj
ment cluster illuminates if the high
beam is switched on by the system.
The high-beam assistance is deactivated by
manually switching the high beams on and off,
see page 91.
To reactivate high-beam assistance, press the button on the turn indicator lever.
Systemlimits
High-beam assistance cannot serve as a subj
stitute for the driver's personal judgement of when to use the high-beam headlights. Thus, activate the dipped headlights manually in sitj
uations requiring such.
In the following situations, the system will not
operate or its operation will be impaired and your intervention may be required:'yDuring extremely unfavourable weather
conditions such as fog or heavy precipitaj
tion.'yWhen detecting poorly-lit road users such
as pedestrians, cyclists or horseback riders
or carts, and when trains or ships are close
to the road, or when animals are crossing the road.'yOn narrow bends, on steep hilltops or in
depressions, when there is crossing traffic or if the view of oncoming vehicles on amotorway is obstructed.'yIn poorly-lit towns and where there are very
reflective signs.'yWhen the windscreen in front of the rear-
view mirror is covered with condensation,
dirt, stickers, labels, etc.Seite 123LightsControls123

Left-hand/right-handtraffic General
When driving in countries where vehicles drive
on the opposite side of the road to your vehij
cle's country of registration, you will need to prevent your headlights from dazzling oncomjing vehicles.
LEDheadlights Light distribution of the headlights prevents
the dipped-beam headlights from dazzling
other road users even when driving in a counj
try where vehicles drive on the other side of the road to your vehicle's country of registrajtion.
AdaptiveHeadlights
When driving in countries which drive on the
other side of the road to your vehicle's country
of registration, do not drive with the switch in position
. Otherwise, the variable light disj
tribution may result in a blinding effect.

Activepedestrianprotection
Principle With the active pedestrian protection system,
the bonnet is raised if the vehicle's front end collides with a pedestrian. Sensors underneaththe bumper are used for detection. This proj
vides additional deformation space underneath
the bonnet for the subsequent head impact.
Safetynotes WARNING
The system can trigger inadvertently if
contact is made with individual components of the hinges and bonnet locks. There is a dangerof injury or damage to property. Do not touch
individual components of the hinges and bonj
net locks.'

The system has been triggered or is faulty.Immediately have the system checked by aService Partner of the manufacturer or another
qualified Service Partner or a specialist workj
shop.
TyrePressureMonitorTPM PrincipleThe system monitors the tyre inflation presj
sure in the four fitted tyres. The system warns if the tyre inflation pressure in one or moretyres has fallen considerably.
General
Sensors in the tyre valves measure the tyre inj
flation pressure and, depending on the model,
the tyre temperature.
To operate the system, also follow the other
information and notes under tyre inflation presj
sure, see page 207.
Operatingrequirements
The following requirements must be met for
the system, otherwise reliable signalling of a loss of tyre inflation pressure is not ensured:'yAfter every tyre or wheel change, a resetmust be carried out with the correct tyre
inflation pressure.'yA reset must be carried out after the tyre
inflation pressure has been adjusted to a new value.'yWheels with TPM wheel electronics.
