Cleaningthewindshield
Pull the lever.
The system sprays washer fluid on the windj shield and activates the wipers briefly.
In addition, the headlights are cleaned at reguj lar intervals when the vehicle's lights are
switched on.
Windshieldwashernozzles
The washer jets are automatically heated whenever the ignition is switched on.

Fold-awaypositionofthewipers
Concept
The wipers can be folded away from the windj shield in the fold-away position.
Generalinformation
Important, e.g., when changing the wiper
blades or when folding out under frosty condij tions.
Safetyinformation WARNING
If the wipers start moving in the folded
away state, body parts can be jammed or damj
age may occur to parts of the vehicle. There is
a risk of injury or risk of property damage.
Make sure that the vehicle is switched off
when the wipers are in the folded away state
and the wipers are folded in when switching
on.'

onds, until the wipers remain in a nearlyvertical position4.Fold the wipers all the way away from the
windshield.
Foldingdownthewipers
After the wipers are folded back down, the
wiper system must be reactivated.
1.Fold the wipers back down onto the windj shield.2.Switch on the ignition.3.Push wiper lever down. Wipers return totheir resting position and are ready again
for operation.
Washerfluid
Generalinformation All washer nozzles are supplied from one resjervoir.
Use a mixture of tap water and windshield washer concentrate. If desired, a windshield
washer concentrate containing antifreeze can
be used.
Recommended minimum fill quantity:
0.2 US gal/1 liter.
Safetyinformation WARNING
Some antifreeze agents can contain
harmful substances and are flammable. There
is a risk of fire and a risk of injury. Observe the instructions on the containers. Keep antifreeze
away from ignition sources. Do not refill operjating materials into different bottles. Store opjerating materials out of reach of children.
United States: the washer fluid mixture ratio is
regulated by the U.S. EPA and many individual states; do not exceed the allowable washer
fluid dilution ratio limits that apply. Follow the
usage instructions on the washer fluid conj
tainer.
Use of BMWss Windshield Washer Concenj trate or the equivalent is recommended.'

Overview
The washer fluid reservoir is located in the enjgine compartment.
Malfunction The use of undiluted windshield washer conj
centrate or alcohol-based antifreeze can lead to incorrect readings at temperatures below
+5

As soon as the selector lever is released, it rejverts to the center position. In position R, theselector lever locks.
The engaged selector lever position is disj
played in the instrument cluster and on the sej
lector lever.
If a selector lever position is engaged, the vehij
cle may start rolling, after the brake is released, e.g., on downhill slopes. Thus, drive off immej
diately after releasing the brake.
Use the Slow Speed Assistant for maneuverj
ing and during stop-and-go traffic.
LowSpeedAssistant
Concept
The Low Speed Assistant gives assistance at very low speeds. The vehicle moves at walkingspeed.
This can also be used for rocking the vehicle in
the snow. To do this, switch between reverse
gear and forward gear without stepping on the
brakes in the process.
Activating1.Engage a driving position.2.Briefly tap the accelerator pedal.
The vehicle rolls at minimum speed.
This is possible in 1st and 2nd gear and in rej
verse gear.
Deactivating
Apply the brakes until the vehicle comes to a stop.
Flashingdisplayontheselectorlever The actually engaged transmission positioncan deviate from the selector lever position insome situations. The display in the selectorlever flashes.
Observe the display in the instrument cluster in these cases.
DisDrivemode
In Drive mode, all forward gears are automatijcally changed.
Kickdown: for maximum acceleration, e.g., when passing. To do this, depress the accelerj ator pedal past the resistance point.
Switch to Sequential mode: shift using the
shift paddles or the selector lever, or push the
selector lever in the D/S direction.
SisSequentialmode Use the shift paddles or the selector lever to
upshift or downshift without letting off the gas.'yMaximum speed: once maximum engine speed is attained, upshifting is not autoj
matically performed in sequential mode. In
addition, the kickdown is deactivated.'yShortly before falling below a gear-dej
pendent minimum speed, the transmission
is automatically downshifted.'yUpshifting or downshifting is done only if
the rpm and vehicle speed are appropriate.
E.g., there is no downshifting if the engine speed is too high.'yKickdown: the lowest possible gear is sej
lected by simultaneously operating the
kickdown and the left shift paddle or selecj
tor lever.'yIt is also possible to start out in 2nd gear, e.g., on icy roads.
Switch to Drive mode: push selector lever in
D/S direction.
ReverseR Select only when the vehicle is stationary.
It is also possible to rock the vehicle up to 6 mph/10 km/h. To do this, switch betweenforward gear and reverse gear without stepjping on the brakes in the process.

LaunchControl
Concept
Launch Control enables optimum acceleration on surfaces with good traction.
Generalinformation The use of Launch Control causes premature
component wear since this function represents
a very heavy load for the vehicle.
Do not use Launch Control during the break-in,
refer to page 189, period.
Requirements
Launch Control is available when the engine is
warmed up, that is, after uninterrupted driving of at least 6 miles/10 km.
To start with Launch Control do not steer the
steering wheel.
ActivateLaunchControl
1.Deactivate Dynamic Stability Control, refer
to page 141, or activate M Dynamic mode,
refer to page 141.2.Select Sequential mode with gear 1 and

brake with the left foot.4.Depress the accelerator pedal far enough
that a flag symbol is displayed in the instruj ment cluster.
Keep accelerator pedal in this position. The starting engine speed adjusts.5.Within 3 seconds, release the brake. The
vehicle accelerates.
Upshifting occurs automatically as long as
the flag symbol is displayed and the accelj
erator pedal is not released.
Launch Control is available again only after the
transmission is cooled down to a certain dej
gree.

Concept
The M Driving Dynamics Control affects the
response of the vehicle to accelerator pedal movements.

CheckControl
Concept
The Check Control system monitors functions
in the vehicle and notifies you of malfunctions
in the monitored systems.
Generalinformation
A Check Control message is displayed as a
combination of indicator or warning lights and
SMS text messages in the instrument cluster
and in the Head-up Display.
In addition, an acoustic signal may sound and
an SMS text message may appear on the Conj trol Display.
Indicator/warninglights
Generalinformation The indicator and warning lights in the instrujment cluster can light up in a variety of combijnations and colors.
Several of the lights are checked for proper
functioning and light up temporarily when the engine is started or the ignition is switched on.
Redlights Safetybeltreminder Safety belt on the driver's side is not
buckled. For some country-specific models: passenger belt is not worn or
objects are detected on the front passenger
seat.
Indicator lamp flashes or is illuminated: safety belt on the driver or passenger side is not buckled. The safety belt reminder can also beactivated if objects are placed on the front pasjsenger seat.
Make sure that the safety belts are positioned correctly.
Airbagsystem Airbag system and belt tensioner are
not working.
Have the vehicle checked immediately
by a dealerss service center or another qualij fied service center or repair shop.
