HDCHillDescentControl
Concept
HDC is a downhill driving assistant that autoj matically controls vehicle speed on steep downhill gradients. Without applying the
brakes, the vehicle moves at slightly more than walking speed. It the brakes are actively apj
plied, the system distributes force according to
the traction.
Vehicle stability and maneuverability are imj proved on downhill gradients.
Hill Descent Control can be activated at speeds below approx. 22 mph/35 km/h. When
driving downhill, the vehicle reduces its speed
and then keeps its speed constant.
Only use HDC in low gears or in selector lever
position D or R.
Increasingordecreasingvehicle
speed
Specify desired speed in the range from apj
prox. 4 mph/6 km/h to approx. 15 mph/25 km/h
using the rocker switch of the cruise control on
the steering wheel. Vehicle speed can be
changed by lightly accelerating.
'yPress the rocker switch up to the point of
resistance: the speed increases gradually.'yPress up the rocker switch past the point
of resistance: the speed increases while
the rocker switch is pressed.'yPress the rocker switch down to the point
of resistance: the speed decreases graduj ally.'yPress the rocker switch down past thepoint of resistance: when driving forward, the speed decreases to approx.
6 mph/10 km/h; when reversing, the speed
decreases to approx. 4 mph/6 km/h.
ActivatingHDC
Press button; the LED above the button
lights up.
DeactivatingHDC Press button again. The LED goes out.HDC is automatically deactivated above
approx. 37 mph/60 km/h.

VerticalDynamicControl Concept
This system reduces undesirable vehicle moj
tion when using a dynamic driving style or travj
eling on uneven road surfaces.
This enhances the driving dynamics and drivj ing comfort depending on the road surface
condition and driving style.

Servotronic
Concept
Servotronic is a speed-dependent power
steering function.
The system provides the steering force with
more support at low speeds than at higher
ones. This makes it easier to park, for instance, and makes steering more direct when driving
at faster speeds.
Furthermore, the steering force adapts accordj ing to the driving program, so that a direct, sporty feel or a comfortable steering response
is conveyed.

Self-levelingsuspension
Concept
The self-leveling suspension keeps the vehicle height and ground clearance constant. The height of the vehicle at the rear axle is mainjtained at a predefined level under all load conjditions.
The system ensures consistent comfort by keeping spring travel constant in all driving sitj
uations.
Malfunction
A Check Control message is displayed. The system is impaired. Vehicle handling may be

reduced. Visit the nearest dealerss service cenj ter or another qualified service center or repair

DrivingcomfortVehiclefeaturesandoptions
This chapter describes all standard, country- specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your vehicle, e. g., due
to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
CruisecontrolConcept
Using this system, a desired speed can be adj justed using the buttons on the steering wheel.
The system maintains the desired speed. The system accelerates and brakes automaticallyas needed.
Generalinformation
Depending on the driving settings, the features
of the cruise control can change in certain areas.
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system does not relieve from perj
sonal responsibility to assess the traffic situaj tion. Based on the limits of the system, it canjnot independently react to all traffic situations.
There is a risk of an accident. Adjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic closelyand actively intervene where appropriate.'

if necessary.
Switchingoff Press button on the steering wheel.'yIf active: press twice.'yIf interrupted: press once.
The displays go out. The stored desired speed
is deleted.
Interruptingmanually When active, press the button.
Interruptingautomatically The system is automatically interrupted in the
following situations:
'yWhen the driver applies the brakes.'yWhen selector lever position D is disenj
gaged.'yWhen M Dynamic Mode MDM is activated
or DSC Dynamic Stability Control is deactij vated.'yIf DSC Dynamic Stability Control interj

vated.
Settingthespeed
Maintaining/storingthespeed
Press the rocker switch while the system is inj terrupted.
When the system is switched on, the current
speed is maintained and stored as the desired
speed.
The stored speed is displayed in the speedomj
eter and briefly in the instrument cluster, refer
to page 166.
DSC Dynamic Stability Control is switched on,
if necessary.
The speed can also be stored bypressing a button.
Press button.
Changingthespeed
Press the rocker switch up or down repeatedly
until the desired speed is set.
If active, the displayed speed is stored and the vehicle reaches the stored speed when the
road is clear.
'yEach time the rocker switch is pressed to
the point of resistance, the desired speed increases or decreases by approx.

pressure on the accelerator pedal.
After the rocker switch is released, the vej
hicle maintains its final speed. Pressing the
switch beyond the resistance point causes
the vehicle to accelerate more rapidly.
Continuingcruisecontrol
Generalinformation
An interrupted cruise control can be continued
by calling up the stored speed.
Make sure that the difference between current speed and stored speed is not too large before
calling up the stored speed. Otherwise, uninj
tentional braking or accelerating may occur.
In the following cases, the stored speed value
is deleted and cannot be called up again:
'yWhen the system is switched off.'yWhen the ignition is switched off.

Concept
PDC is a support when parking. When you
slowly approach an object in the rear - or also
in the front of the vehicle if the feature is availaj ble - then the object is reported through:
'ySignal tones.'yVisual display.
Generalinformation
The ultrasound sensors for measuring the disj
tances are located in the bumpers.
The maneuvering range, depending on the obj
stacle and environmental conditions, is approx.
6 ft/2 m.
An acoustic warning is first given in the followj ing situations:

WARNING
Signaltones An intermittent tone indicates when the vehijcle is approaching an object. E.g., if an object
is detected to the left rear of the vehicle, a sigj
nal tone sounds from the left rear speaker.
The shorter the distance to the object, the
shorter the intervals.
If the distance to a detected object is less than
approx. 10 inches/25 cm, a continuous tone is sounded.
With front PDC: if objects are simultaneously located both in front of and behind the vehicle, an alternating continuous signal is sounded.
Volume
The ratio of the PDC signal tone volume to the
entertainment volume can be adjusted.
Via iDrive:

The setting is stored for the driver profile curj
rently used.
Visualwarning
The approach of the vehicle to an object is
shown on the Control Display. Objects that are farther away are already displayed on the Conjtrol Display before a signal sounds.
A display appears as soon as Park Distance
Control (PDC) is activated.
The range of the sensors is represented in the
colors green, yellow and red.
When the image of the rearview camera is disj played, the switch can be made to PDC:
1.Move the Controller to the left, if needed.2. "Rear view camera"
Systemlimits
Safetyinformation WARNING
The system can react not at all, too late,
incorrectly, or without justification due to the system limits. There is a risk of accidents or
risk of damage to property. Follow the informaj
tion regarding the system limits and actively
intervene, if needed.'

Falsewarnings
The system may issue a warning under the folj lowing conditions even though there is no objstacle within the detection range:

If necessary, switch off automatic PDC activajtion on obstacle detection, for instance in vehij
cle washes, to reduce false alarms.
Malfunction
A Check Control message is displayed.
The range of the sensors is shown as a shaded area on the Control Display.
PDC has failed. Have the system checked by a
dealerss service center or another qualified service center or repair shop.
