Many people read their owner’s manual from beginning
to end when they first receive their new vehcle. If
you do
this, it will help you learn about the features and controls
for your vehicle. In this manual, you’ll find that pictures
and words work together to explain things quickly.
Index
A good place to look for what you need is the Index in
the back of the manual. It’s an alphabetical list
of all
that’s in the manual, and the page number where you’ll
find it.
Safety Warnings and Symbols
You will find a number of safety cautions in this book. We
use a box and the word
CAUTION to tell you about things
that could hurt
you if you were to ignore the warning.
These mean there is something that could hurt
you
or other people.
In the caution area, we tell you what the hazard is. Then
we tell you what to do to help avoid or reduce the
hazard. Please read these cautions. If you don’t, you or
others could be hurt.
You will also find a circle
with a slash through it
in
this book. This safety
symbol means “Don’t,”
“Don’t
do this,” or “Don’t
let this happen.”

Here you can learn about the many standard and optional
features on your Cadillac, and information on starting,
shifbng and braking.
Also explained are the instrument
panel and the warning systems that tell you if everything is
working properly
-- and what to do if you have a problem.
Keys
~~~
A CAUTION:
Leaving young children in a vehicle with the
ignition key is dangerous for many reasons.
A child
or others could be badly injured or even killed.
They could operate power windows or other
controls
or even make the vehicle move. If they
turned the ignition to
ON and moved the shift
lever out
of PARK (P), that would release the
parking brake. Don’t leave the keys in
a vehicle
with young children.
To set the parking brake,
hold the regular brake pedal down with your right foot.
Push down the parking
brake pedal with your left
foot.
If the ignition is on,
the brake system warning
light will come on. Pull
on the manual release
lever located near the
parking brake.
When you shift out
of PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N), if
your engine is running, your parking brake should
release.
If it doesn’t, you have a parking brake problem
and should have it fixed.
In the meantime, you can still
release your parking brake.
If your hand or arm is in the way of the pedal,
you could be hurt. The pedal springs back
quickly. Keep your hand and arm away when you
use the manual release lever.
the headlamp knob. Push the knob all the way in to turn
them
off.
Lamps On Reminder
If the manual lamp switch is left on (as when someone has
parked your vehicle), you’ll hear a warning chime when
you turn
off the ignition and open the driver’s door.
Daytime Running Lamps
Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) can make it easier for
others to see the front
of your vehicle during the day.
DRL can be helpful in many different driving
conditions, but they can be especially helpful in the
short periods after dawn and before sunset.
A light sensor on top of the instrument panel makes the
DRL work,
so be sure it isn’t covered
The
DRL system will make your low-beam headlamps
come on at reduced brightness
in daylight when:
0 the ignition is on and,
0 the headlamp switch is off.
Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine Warning Lights. Gages and
Indicators
This part describes the warning lights and gages that
may be
on your vehicle. The pictures will help you
locate them.
Warning lights and gages can signal that something is
wrong before it becomes serious enough to cause an
expensive repair or replacement. Paying attention to
your warning lights and gages could also save you or
others from injury.
Warning lights come on when there may be or is a
problem with one
of your vehicle’s functions. As you
will see in the details on the next few pages, some
warning lights come on briefly when you start the
engine just to let you know they’re working. If you are
familiar with this section, you should not be alarmed
when this happens.
Gages can indicate when there may be or
is a problem
with one of your vehicle’s functions. Often gages and
warning lights work together to let you know when
there’s a problem with your vehicle. When
one
of the warning lights comes on and stays on
when you are driving, or when one of the gages shows
there may be a problem, check the section that tells you
what
to do about it. Please follow this manual’s advice.
Waiting to do repairs can be costly
-- and even
dangerous.
So please get to know your warning lights
and gages. They’re a big help.
Safety Belt Reminder Light
When the key is turned to RUN or START, a chime will
come on for about eight seconds to remind people to
fasten their safety belts, unless the driver’s safety belt is
already buckled.
The safety belt light
will also come
on and
stay on until the driver’s
belt is buckled.
Brake System Warning Light
Your Cadillac’s hydraulic brake system is divided into
two parts. If one part isn’t worlung, the other part can
still work and stop you. For good braking, though, you
need both parts working well.
If the warning light comes on, there could be a brake
problem. Have your brake system inspected right away.
BRAKE
This light should come on
when you turn the ignition
key to START. If
it doesn’t
come on then, have it fixed
so it will be ready to warn
you if there’s a problem.
If the light comes on while you are driving, pull off the
road and stop carefully. You may notice that the pedal is
harder to push. Or, the pedal may go closer to
the floor.
It may take longer to stop. If the light is still on, have the
vehicle towed for service. (See “Towing Your Vehicle”
in the Index.)
Your brake system may not be working properly
if the brake system warning light is on. Driving
with the brake system warning light on can lead
to
an accident. If the light is still on after you’ve
pulled off the road and stopped carefully, have
the vehicle towed for service.
When the ignition is on, the brake system warning light
will also come on when you set your parking brake. The
light will stay on if your parking brake doesn’t release
fully.
If it stays on after your parking brake is fully
released,
it means you have a brake problem.
Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine Anti-Lock Brake System Warning Light
With the anti-lock brake
system, this light will
come on when you start
your engine and may stay
LOCK ANT‘- (e) That’s on for several normal. seconds.
If the light stays on,
turn the ignition off. Or, if the light
comes on when you’re driving, stop as soon as possible
and
turn the ignition off. Then start the engine again to
reset the system.
If the light still stays on, or comes on
again while you’re driving, your Cadillac needs service.
If the regular brake system warning light isn’t on, you
still have brakes, but you don’t have anti-lock brakes. If
the regular brake system warning light
is also on, you
don’t have anti-lock brakes and there’s a problem with
your regular brakes. See “Brake System Warning Light”
earlier in this part. The
anti-lock brake system warning light should come
on briefly when you turn the ignition key to
RUN. If the
light doesn’t come on then, have
it fixed so it will be
ready to warn you
if there is a problem.
The anti-lock brake system warning light may also
come on when you are driving with a compact spare tire.
If this happens, the light means you won’t have
anti-lock until you replace the compact spare with a
full-size tire. If the warning light stays on after you
replace the compact spare with a full-size tire, or if it
comes on again when you’re driving, your Cadillac
needs service.
Traction Control System Warning Light
TRACTION CONTROL
This warning light should
come on briefly as you start
the engine. If it doesn’t
come on then, have it fixed
so it will be ready to warn
you if there’s a problem.
If it stays on, or comes on when you’re driving, there
may be a problem with your traction control system and
your vehicle may need service. When
this warning light
is on,
the system will not limit wheel spin. Adjust your
driving accordingly.
If you turn the system
off by pressing the button located
in the glove
box, the warning light will come on and
stay on.
To turn the system back on, press the button
again. The warning light should go
off. (See “Traction
Control System” in the Index for more information.)
If the traction control system warning light comes on
and stays on for an extended period of time when the
system is turned on, your vehicle needs service.
Traction Control System Active Light
TRACTION
ENGAGED
When your traction control
system
is limiting wheel
spin, this light will come on.
Slippery road conditions
may exist
if the traction
control system active light
comes on,
so adjust your
driving accordingly.
The light will stay on for a few seconds after the traction
control system stops limiting wheel spin.
The traction control system active light also comes on
briefly when you turn the ignition key to
RUN. If the
light doesn’t come on then, have it fixed so it will be
there to tell you when the system is active.
These lights are deleted on Coachbuilder limousines and
funeral coach packages.
TEMP
This light should come
on briefly as a bulb check
when you start the engine.
This light tells you that
your engine coolant
has overheated.
Low Coolant Warning Light
LOW
COOLANT
If the coolant level in the
radiator is low, this light
will come on and stay on
until you add coolant.
Continuing
to drive your
vehicle with this warning
light on may result in
damage to your engine.
If you have been operating your vehicle under normal
driving conditions, you should pull
off the road, stop
your vehicle and turn the engine
off as soon as possible.
In “Problems on the Road,” this manual shows you what
to do.
See “Engine Overheating” in the Index. See
“Engine Coolant” in the Index and have your
vehicle serviced as
soon as you can.
