Warning light Ycoming on when driving
❒If the warning light Yturns on, this
means that the system is running a self-
test (for example for a voltage drop).
❒If the warning light Ystays on, con-
tact a Fiat Dealership.
The electronic components
inside the key may be dam-
aged if the key is submitted to
sharp knocks.
OPERATION
Each time the vehicle is started turning the
ignition key to MAR, the Fiat CODE sys-
tem control unit sends a recognition code
to the engine control unit to deactivate
the inhibitor.
The code is sent only if the Fiat CODE
system control unit has recognised the
code transmitted from the key.
Each time the ignition key is turned to
STOP, the Fiat CODE system deactivates
the functions of the engine electronic con-
trol unit.
If the code has not been recognised cor-
rectly, the warning light
Yturns on ac-
companied by the related message on the
display (see section “Warning lights and
messages”).
In this case, the key should be moved to
the STOPposition and then back to
MAR; if the lock continues, possibly try
again with the other key provided with the
vehicle. If it is still not possible to start the
vehicle, contact Fiat Dealership.
IMPORTANT Every key has its own code,
which must be memorised by the system
control unit. To memorise new keys, up
to a maximum of eight, apply to Fiat Deal-
ership.
THE KEYS
CODE CARD fig. 3
The vehicle is delivered with two copies
of the ignition key and with the CODE
card which bears the following:
Athe electronic code;
Bthe mechanical key code to be given
to the Fiat Dealership when ordering
duplicate keys.
IMPORTANT In order to ensure perfect
efficiency of the electronic devices con-
tained inside the keys, they should never
be exposed to direct sunlight.

ELECTRONIC ALARM
(where provided)
The alarm, provided in addition to all the
remote control functions described pre-
viously is controlled by the receiver set
under the dashboard near the fuse box.
WHEN THE ALARM
IS TRIGGERED
The alarm comes into action in the fol-
lowing cases:
❒unlawful opening of one of the doors or
engine bonnet (perimetral protection);
❒attempt to start the engine (key turned
to MAR);
❒battery cables cutting;
❒abnormal raising/sloping of the vehicle.
Depending on the markets, the cutting in
of the alarm causes operation of the siren
and direction indicators (for about 26 sec-
onds). The ways of operating and the num-
ber of cycles may vary depending on the
markets.
A maximum number of sound/sight cycles
is however envisaged; at the end of these
cycles the system will resume its regular
operation.Anti-raising protection can be cut off by
pressing the corresponding button (see
paragraph “Anti-raising sensor” on the fol-
lowing pages).
IMPORTANT The engine immobiliser
function is guaranteed by the Fiat CODE
system, which is automatically activated
when the key is removed from the igni-
tion device.
HOW TO ACTIVATE
THE ALARM
With the doors, bonnet and load com-
partment shut and ignition key toSTOP
or removed, point the key with remote
control or removed, point the key with
remote control in the direction of the ve-
hicle, then press and release the button
“lock”.
With the exception of certain markets,
the system sounds a “beep” and the doors
are locked.
Engagement of the alarm is preceded by
a self-diagnostic test. If a fault is detected
the system sounds a further warning
“beep”.
In this case, switch the alarm off by press-
ing button “door unlock/load compart-
ment unlock”, check that the doors and
bonnet are properly shut, then switch the
alarm on again by pressing button “lock”.The door and bonnet not properly shut
will be excluded from the alarm control.
If the doors, bonnet and load compart-
ment are shut correctly and the warning
“beep” is repeated, the system self-diag-
nostics has detected a system operating
fault. It is therefore necessary to contact
a Fiat Dealership.
IMPORTANT Operating the central door
locking system with the metal insert of the
key will not activate the alarm.
IMPORTANT The alarm is built in com-
pliance with the law and regulations of the
different destination countries.
HOW TO DEACTIVATE
THE ALARM
Press button “door unlock/load compart-
ment unlock” of the key with remote con-
trol.
The system will react as follows (with the
exception of certain markets):
❒two brief flashes of the direction in-
dicators;
❒two brief “beeps”;
❒door unlocking.
IMPORTANT Operating the central door
opening system with the metal insert of
the key will not activate the alarm.

IGNITION
DEVICE
The key can be turned to 4 different po-
sitions fig. 9:
❒STOP: engine off, key can be re-
moved, steering column locked. Cer-
tain electrical devices (e.g.: sound sys-
tem, central door locking…) can
work.
❒MAR: driving position. All electrical
devices are powered.
❒AVV: engine starting (unstable posi-
tion).
The ignition switch is fitted with an elec-
tronic safety system that, in the event the
engine is not started, turns back the igni-
tion key to STOPbefore repeating the
starting operation.STEERING COLUMN LOCK
Engaging
When the key is at STOP, remove the
key and turn the steering wheel until it
locks.
Disengaging
Rock the steering wheel slightly as you
turn the ignition key to MAR.
If the ignition device is tam-
pered with (e.g.: attempted
theft), have it checked over by a Fiat
Dealership as soon as possible.
WARNING
When getting out of the ve-
hicle, always remove the key
to prevent any occupants from acci-
dentally activating the controls. Re-
member to engage the handbrake
and if the vehicle is parked on uphill
slope to engage the first gear. If the
vehicle is facing downhill, engage the
reverse gear. Never leave unsuper-
vised children in the vehicle.
WARNING
fig. 9F0N0007m
Never remove the ignition
key while the vehicle is mov-
ing. The steering wheel would auto-
matically lock as soon as you try to
turn it. This also applies when the ve-
hicle is being towed.
WARNING
It is absolutely forbidden to
carry out whatever after-
market operation involving steering
system or steering column modifica-
tions (e.g.: installation of anti-theft
device) that could badly affect per-
formance and safety, cause the lapse
of warranty and also result in non-
compliance of the vehicle with ho-
mologation requirements.

POWER SUPPLY AND
FUEL CUT-OFF SWITCH
The vehicle is fitted with a safety switch that
in the event of a crash comes into opera-
tion by cutting off fuel and turning off the en-
gine as a consequence. When the inertial
switch cuts in, fuel supply is stopped and haz-
ard and sidelights will turn on, for turning
off press button A. An additional safety
switch is also fitted, that in the event of a
crash comes into operation by cutting off the
power supply. These two safety switches
therefore prevent dangerous fuel leaks due
to fuel line cracking and sparks or electric dis-
charges due to damaging or malfunctioning
of the electric components of the vehicle in
the event of a crash.
IMPORTANT After a crash, remember to
remove the key from the ignition device to
prevent battery run-down.
If, after a crash no fuel leaks or damages to
the electric devices (e.g. headlights) are
found and the vehicle can be started again,
reset the fuel cut-off switch and the power
supply cut-off switch (where provided). Fol-
low the instructions given below.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR
USING THE SEAT BELTS
The driver must comply with (and have
the vehicle occupants follow) all the local
legal regulations concerning the use of seat
belts. Always fasten the seat belts before
starting.Seat belts are also to be worn by expec-
tant mothers: the risk of injury in the case
of accident is greatly reduced for them and
the unborn child if they are wearing a seat
belt.Of course they must position the lower
part of the belt very low down so that it
passes under the abdomen, see fig. 4.

CORRECT USE
OF THE VEHICLE
If the engine does not start at the first at-
tempt, return the ignition key to STOP
before repeating starting.
If, when the ignition key is at MAR, the in-
strument panel warning light
Yremains
lit together with warning light
mturn
the key to STOPand then back to MAR;
if the warning lights remain on, try with
the other keys provided with the vehicle.
IMPORTANT If the instrument panel
warning light
Ystays on glowing steadi-
ly, contact immediately Fiat Dealership.
IMPORTANT Never leave the ignition key
to MARwhen the engine is off.
The warning light
mwill
flash for 60 seconds at start-
up or during prolonged crank-
ing to indicate a fault in the
glow plug heating system. You can use
the vehicle as usual if the engine starts
but you should contact Fiat Dealership
as soon as possible.
HOW TO WARM UP THE
ENGINE AFTER IT HAS JUST
STARTED
Proceed as follows:
❒drive off slowly, letting the engine turn
at medium revs. Do not accelerate
abruptly;
❒do not drive at full performance for
the initial kilometres. Wait until the
coolant temperature gauge starts
moving.
Remember that the servo-
brake and power steering are
not operational until the en-
gine has been started, there-
fore much effort than usual is required
on the brake pedal and steering wheel.
Never bump start the engine
by pushing, towing or coast-
ing downhill as this could
cause fuel to flow into the
catalytic exhaust system and damage
it beyond repair.
STOPPING THE ENGINE
Turn the ignition to STOPwhile the en-
gine is idling.
IMPORTANT After a taxing drive, you
should allow the engine to “catch its
breath” before turning it off by letting it
idle to allow the temperature in the en-
gine compartment to fall.
A quick burst on the acceler-
ator before turning off the en-
gine serves absolutely no
practical purpose, it wastes
fuel and is damaging especially to tur-
bocharged engines.

On certain versions the dedicated message
is displayed.
¬If when turning the ignition
key to MAR, the warning
light ¬does not turn on or stays on
when travelling there could be a fail-
ure in safety systems; in this event air
bags or pretensioners could not trig-
ger in case of impact or, in a minor
number of cases, they could trigger
accidentally. Contact Fiat Dealership
immediately to have the system
checked.
WARNING
The failure of the warning
light ¬(warning light off) is
also indicated by the flashing for
more than the normal 4 seconds of
the passenger’s front air bag deacti-
vated warning light F.

The warning light turns on when the en-
gine is overheated.
If the warning light comes on, proceed as
follows:
❒normal driving conditions: stop
the vehicle, switch off the engine and
check whether the water level in the
reservoir is not below the MIN mark.
Otherwise wait for few seconds to al-
low the engine cooling, then open
slowly and carefully the cap, top up
coolant and check whether its level is
falling between MIN and MAX marks
in the reservoir. Check visually any
leak. If, when restarting, the warning
light comes on again, contact a Fiat
Dealership.
