changed at the intervals specified in
the maintenance schedule. If the car
is being driven in severe conditions,
more frequent oil and filter changes
are required.Drive beltsInspect all drive belts for evidence of
cuts, cracks, excessive wear or oil
saturation and replace if necessary.
Drive belts should be checked peri-
odically for proper tension and
adjusted as necessary.When you are inspecting the belt,
place the ignition switch in the
LOCK/OFF or ACC position.
Fuel filterA clogged filter can limit the speed at
which the vehicle may be driven,
damage the emission system and
cause multiple issues such as hard
starting. If an excessive amount of
foreign matter accumulates in the
fuel tank, the filter may require
replacement more frequently.
After installing a new filter, run the
engine for several minutes, and
check for leaks at the connections.
We recommend that the fuel filter be
replaced by an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer.
Fuel lines, fuel hoses and con-
nectionsCheck the fuel lines, fuel hoses and
connections for leakage and dam-
age. We recommend that the fuel
lines, fuel hoses and connections be

Diesel only
Never work on injection system
with engine running or within 30
seconds after shutting off engine.
High pressure pump, rail, injectors
and high pressure pipes are sub-
ject to high pressure even a fter
the engine stopped. The fuel jet
produced by fuel leaks may cause
serious injury, if it touch the b ody.
People using pacemakers should
not move than 30cm closer to the
ECU or wiring harness within the
eng ine room while engine is run-
ning, since the high currents in the
Common Rail system produce
considerab le magnetic fields.

VVapor hose and fuel filler capThe vapor hose and fuel filler cap
should be inspected at those inter-
vals specified in the maintenance
schedule. Make sure that a new
vapor hose or fuel filler cap is cor-
rectly replaced.
Vacuum crankcase ventilation
hoses (if equipped)Inspect the surface of hoses for evi-
dence of heat and/or mechanical
damage. Hard and brittle rubber,
cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, and
excessive swelling indicate deterio-
ration. Particular attention should be
paid to examine those hose surfaces
nearest to high heat sources, such
as the exhaust manifold.
Inspect the hose routing to assure
that the hoses do not come in con-
tact with any heat source, sharp
edges or moving component which
might cause heat damage or
mechanical wear. Inspect all hose
connections, such as clamps and
couplings, to make sure they are
secure, and that no leaks are pres-
ent. Hoses should be replaced
immediately if there is any evidence
of deterioration or damage.
Air cleaner filterWe recommend that the air cleaner
filter be replaced by an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer.Spark plugsMake sure to install new spark plugs
of the correct heat range.Do not disconnect and inspect
spark plugs when the engine is
hot. You may burn yourself.

such as radiator, coolant reservoir,
hoses and connections for leakage
and damage. Replace any damaged

Continuously Variable Transaxle
fluid (if equipped)Continuously Variable Transaxle fluid
should not be checked under normal
usage conditions.
But, the Continuously Variable
Transaxle fluid should be changed
under severe usage conditions. We
recommend that the Continuously
Variable Transaxle fluid changed by
an authorized HYUNDAI dealer
according to the maintenance sched-
ule. (Refer to “Maintenance Under
Severe Usage Conditions” in this
chapter. )
Information
Continuously Variable Transaxle fluid
color is basically light amber.
As the vehicle is driven, the
Continuously Variable Transaxle fluid
will begin to look darker.
It is normal condition and you should
not judge the need to replace the fluid
based upon the changed color.
The use of non-specified fluid (even
marked as compatible with genuine)
could result in shift quality d eteriora-
tion and vibrations, eventually, the
transaxle failure.
Use only specified Continuously
Variabl e Transaxle fluid. (Refer to
"Recommended lubricants and
capacities" in chapter 8.)Brake hoses and linesVisually check for proper installation,
chafing, cracks, deterioration and
any leakage. Replace any deteriorat-
ed or damaged parts immediately.Brake fluidCheck brake fluid level in the brake
fluid reservoir. The level should be
between "MIN" (Minimum) and
"MAX" (Maximum) marks on the side
of the reservoir. Use only hydraulic
brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 or
DOT 4 specification.NOTICE

PParking brakeInspect the parking brake system
including the parking brake pedal
and cables. Brake discs, pads, calipers and
rotorsCheck the pads for excessive wear,
discs for run out and wear, and
calipers for fluid leakage.Suspension mounting boltsCheck the suspension connections
for looseness or damage. Retighten
to the specified torque.
Steering gear box, linkage &
boots/lower arm ball joint
With the vehicle stopped and engine
off, check for excessive free-play in
the steering wheel.
Check the linkage for bends or dam-
age. Check the dust boots and ball
joints for deterioration, cracks, or damage. Replace any damaged
parts.
Drive shafts and bootsCheck the drive shafts, boots and
clamps for cracks, deterioration, or
damage. Replace any damaged
parts and, if necessary, repack the
grease.Air conditioning refrigerant
(if equipped)Check the air conditioning lines and
connections for leakage and dam-
age.

(Petrol engiene)1.Be sure the vehicle is on level
ground.
2.Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating tempera-
ture.
3.Turn the engine off and wait for a few minutes (about 5 minutes) for
the oil to return to the oil pan.
4.Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean, and reinsert it fully.
5.Pull the dipstick out again and check the level. The level should be
between F (Full) and L (Low). If it is near or at L (Low), add enough
oil to bring the level to F (Full).
Do not
overfill.
Use a funnel to help prevent oil from
being spilled on engine components.
Use only the specified engine oil. (Refer to "Recommended lubricantsand capacities" in chapter 8.)
Radiator hose
Be very careful not to touch the
radiator hose when checking or
adding the engine oil as i t may be
hot enough to burn you.

Do not overfill the engine oil. It
may damage the engine.

Do not spill engine oil, when
adding or changing engine oil. If
you drop the engine oil on the
engine ro om, wipe it off immedi-
ately.
•
When you wipe the oil level
gauge, you should wipe it with a
clean cloth. When mixed with
debris, it can cause engine dam-
age.

replaced by an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer.Put a thick cloth or fabric around the
radiator cap before refilling the
coolant in order to prevent the
coolant from overflowing into engine
parts such as the alternator.NOTICE

Do not use radiator coolant or
antifreeze in the washer fluid
reservoir.

obscure visibility when sprayed
on the windshield and may
cause loss of ve hicle control or
damage to paint and body trim.

Do not allow brake/clutch fluid to
contact the vehicle's body paint, as
paint damage will result.
Brake/clutch fluid, which has been
exposed to open air for an extended
time should never be used as its
qualit y cannot be guaranteed. It
should be properly disposed. Don't
put in the wrong kind of fluid. A few
drop s of mineral-based oil, such as
engine oil, in your brake/clutch sys-
tem can damage brake/clutch sys-
t em parts. NOTICE
Brake/clutch fluid
When changing and adding
brake/clutch fluid, handle it care-
fully. Do not let it com e in contact
with your eyes. If brake/clutch fluid
come in contact with your eyes,
immediately flush the m with a
large quantity of fresh tap water.
Have your eyes examined by a
doctor as soon as possible.

 $#!Checking the washer fluid level Check the fluid level in the washer
fluid reservoir and add fluid if neces-
sary. Plain water may be used if
washer fluid is not available.
However, use washer solvent with
antifreeze characteristics in cold cli-
mates to prevent freezing.
Checking the parking brakeCheck the stroke of the parking
brake by counting the number of
“clicks’’ heard while fully applying it
from the released position. Also, the
parking brake alone should securely
hold the vehicle on a fairly steep
grade. If the stroke is more or less
than specified, we recommend that
the system be inspected by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer.Stroke : 6~8 “clicks’’ at a force of 20
kg (44 lbs, 196 N).

Coolant•
Do not use radiator coolant or

sonous to humans and animals. Do not drink and avoid coming
in contact with the windshield
washer fluid. Serious injury or
death could occur.

#!$$Draining water from fuel filterThe fuel filter for diesel engine plays
an important role of separating water
from fuel and accumulating the water
in its bottom.
If water accumulates in the fuel filter,
the warning light comes on when the
ignition switch is in the ON position.
If this warning light turned
on, we recommend that
the system be serviced by
an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer.If the water accumulated in the fuel
filter is not drained at proper times,
damages to the major parts such as
the fuel system can be caused by water permeation in the fuel filter.
Extracting air from the fuel filterIf you drive until you have no fuel left
or if you replace the fuel filter, be
sure to extract air from the fuel sys-
tem as it makes it difficult to start the
engine.
1. Pump up and down(1) approxi- mately 50 times until the pump is
hard.
2. Extract air from the fuel filter by removing the bolt(2) with a cross-
tip screw driver and reinstall the
bolt(2).
3. Pump up and down(1) approxi- mately 15 times.
4. Extract air from the fuel filter by removing the bolt(2) with a cross-
tip screw driver and reinstall the
bolt(2).
5. Pump up and down(1) approxi- mately 5 times.
Information
Use cloths when you extract air sothat the fuel is not sprayed around.
Clean the fuel around the fuel filter or the injection pump before start-
ing the engine to prevent fire.
Finally, check each part if the fuel is leaking.i

!#$ "$#Filter replacement You can clean the filter when inspect-
ing the air cleaner element.
Clean the filter by using compressed
air.
1. Loosen the air cleaner cover attaching clips and open the cover. 2. Remove the used filter and wipe
the inside of the air cleaner hous-
ing carefully not to remain dusts in
the cover housing.
3. Place new filter with clean hands and ensure the rubber gasket is
not taken off.
4. Lock the cover with attaching clips.
Replace the filter according to the
Maintenance Schedule.
If the vehicle is operated in extreme- ly dusty or sandy areas, replace theelement more often than the usualrecommended intervals. (Refer to“Maintenance under severe usageconditions” in this chapter.)
• Do not drive with the filter removed; this will result in exces-
sive engine wear.
• When replacing th e air cleaner fil-
ter, be careful that dust or dirt does
not enter the air intake, or damage
may result .
Keep the new filter clean of any
contamination while replacing.
• We recommend that you use parts for re placement from an author-
ized HYUNDAI dealer.NOTICE
