AUTO
1. Stop the vehicle.
2. Depress the clutch pedal (Manual Transmission) or put the shift lever into "N (neutral)" position (Automatic Transmission).
3. Turn the transfer shift knob to "AUTO" mode. Driving 4WD Safely
(1) Be sure to wear the seat belt.
(2) Drive at lower speeds in strong
crosswinds. Because of your vehicle's high centre of gravity, its stability will be affected in cross-winds. Slower speeds ensure bet- ter vehicle control.
(3) Check the brake condition after driving in wet or muddy conditions.Press the brake several times as you move slowly until you feel nor-mal braking forces return.
(4) Do not drive the vehicle through
water. (i.e. streams, rivers, lakes,etc.)
(5) The stopping distance of the full-
time 4WD vehicle differs very littlefrom that of the 2WD vehicle. When driving on a snow-covered road or a slippery, muddy surface, make sure that you keep a suffi- cient distance between your ve- hicle and the one ahead of you.
AUTO Mode Full power delivered to front and rear axles for increase traction. Use this mode for normal on-road operatingconditions such as dry road surfaces, wet pavement, snow-covered roads and/or off-road. LOW Mode Full power to both axles, including a lower gear ratio for low-speed applica-tions that require extra power such as dry road surfaces, wet pavement, snow-covered roads and/or off-road.Especially when increased drive power is required. "LOW" mode is not recommended ondry pavement. The 4WD LOW indicator light ( ) will be turned on to remind you that youare in the LOW mode.

Water entering the engine air intake will cause severe engine damage. Water can wash the grease from wheel bearings, causing rusting and prema-ture failure, and may also enter the axles, transmission and transfer case, reducing the gear oil's lubricating quali-ties. CAUTION:
o Whilst the full-time 4WD vehicle is
being raised on a jack, never start the engine or cause the tyres to rotate. There is the danger that rotating tyres touching the ground couldcause the vehicle to go off the jack and to jump forward.
o If one of the front or rear wheels begins to spin in mud, snow, etc.,the vehicle can sometimes be driven out by depressing the ac-celerator pedal further; however, avoid running the engine continu- ously at high rpm because doingso could damage the 4WD system.
!WARNING:
o Avoid high cornering speeds.
o Do not make quick steering wheel movements, such as sharp lane charges or fast, sharp turns.
o The risk of rollover is greatly in-
creased if you lose control of yourvehicle at highway speeds.
o In a collision crash, an unbelted
person is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
o Loss of control often occurs if two or more wheels drop off the road- way and the driver oversteers toreenter the roadway.
o In the event your vehicle leaves
the roadway, do not steer sharply.Instead, slow down before pulling back into the travel lanes.
!
ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS)
C120A02A-EAT (Not all models) The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is designed to prevent wheel lock-upduring sudden braking or on hazard- ous road surfaces. The ABS control module monitors the wheel speed andcontrols the pressure applied to each brake. Thus, in emergency situations or on slick roads, ABS will increasevehicle control during braking. NOTE: During ABS operation, a slight pul- sation may be felt in the brake pedal when the brakes are applied. Also, a noise may be heard in the enginecompartment whilst braking. These conditions are normal and indicate that the anti-lock brake system isfunctioning properly.
WARNING:
ABS will not prevent accidents due to improper or dangerous driving manoeuvres. Even though vehiclecontrol is improved during emer-

ZC170B1-E Electrical System Winter conditions impose severe de- mands upon vehicle electrical systems, particularly the charging circuit. The battery condition and performance along with the alternator performance and drive belt condition should bechecked prior to the onset of winter.WINTER DRIVING
DC170A1-E The onset of winter conditions subject motor vehicles to greater operating demands. Therefore, the following suggestions will assist in maintainingpeak performance and reliability dur- ing these periods:
lowed to accumulate on the under- side of the car. This extra weight canresult in increased fuel consumption and also contribute to corrosion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces- sary weight in your car. Weight re-duces fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than necessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engine and restart only when you're readyto go.
o Remember, your Hyundai does not
require extended warm-up. As soonas the engine is running smoothly, you can drive away. In very cold weather, however, give your enginea slightly longer warm-up period.
o Don't "labour" or "over-rev" the en-
gine. Labouring is driving too slowlyin too high a gear resulting in the vehicle kangarooing. If this happens, shift to a lower gear. Over-revving isracing the engine beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting at the recommended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is oper-ated by engine power so your fueleconomy is reduced when you use it.SMOOTH CORNERING
C150A01A-EAT Avoid braking or gear changing in cor- ners, especially when roads are wet. Ideally, corners should always be taken under gentle acceleration. If you followthese suggestions, tyre wear will be held to a minimum.

1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12
volt type. If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehicles are not touch- ing.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the ve- hicle providing the jump start is run- ning prior to connection of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the boosterbattery and the other end to thepositive (+) terminal of the dis- charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the negative (-) terminal of the boosterbattery, and the other end to a ground point within the engine compartmentof the vehicle with the flat bat-tery. Do not connect to the negative bat- tery terminal of the flat battery sincesparks may be generated with the subsequent risk of explosion.
6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to 2,000 r.p.m. and start theengine of the vehicle with the flat battery. 7. Switch "ON" the main beam
headlamps before carefully remov-ing the jumper cables in the reverse order of attachment. Once the jumper cables have been removed, switch "OFF" the main beam headlamps.
CAUTION:
If the jump cable is incorrectly in- stalled, damage to the vehicle elec- trical system may occur, in particu- lar the electronic components suchas the Fuel Injection system com- puter and the Automatic transmis- sion computer. The battery mustnever be disconnected whilst the engine is running.
IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
HPD040A2-E If the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P"
(automatic), or neutral (manual trans- mission) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out from underthe bonnet, stop the engine. Do not open the bonnet until the coolant hasstopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is no visible loss of coolant and no steam, leave theengine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan is operating. If the fan is not running, turn theengine off.
4. Check to see if the water pump drive
belt is missing. If it is not missing, check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfactory, check for coolant leaking from theradiator, hoses or under the car. (If the air conditioning had been in use, it is normal for cold water to bedraining from it).

!WARNING:
Whilst the engine is running, keep hands and clothing away from mov- ing parts such as the fan and drive belts to prevent injury.
WARNING (Diesel only):
Never work on injection system withengine running or within 30 seconds after shutting off engine. High pres- sure pump, rail, injectors and highpressure pipes are subject to high pressure even after the engine stopped. The fuel jet produced byfuel leaks may cause serious in- jury, if it touch the body. People using pacemakers should not movethan 30cm closer to the ECU or wiring harness within the engine room while engine is running, sincethe high currents in the Common Rail system produce considerable magnetic fields. 5. If the water pump drive belt is broken
or coolant is leaking out, stop theengine immediately and call the near- est Hyundai dealer for assistance.
WARNING:
Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot since steam andboiling water may be ejected from the radiator resulting in burns or scalding.
6. If the cause of the overheating can- not be found, wait until the engine temperature has returned to normal. Then, if coolant has been lost, care- fully remove the radiator cap and add water to bring the fluid level in thereservoir(page 6-10) up to the base of the radiator fill opening. Fill the coolant expansion tank to the half-way mark.
7. Proceed with caution until it is estab-
lished that the engine is operatingnormally. If the engine overheats repeatedly, the advice of a Hyundai dealer should be sought.! CAUTION:
Serious loss of coolant indicates there is a leak in the cooling system and this should be checked as soon as possible by a Hyundai dealer.

JE100A1-E SEAT BELTS Seat belts should be cleaned only with a mild soap solution. Strong deter-gents, solvens or bleaches may dam- age the belt webbing and therefore reduce the effectiveness of the belt.Belts which display signs of fraying, wear or cut should be replaced.INTERIOR VALETING
JE110A1-E The soft trim and carpets should be maintained with the regular use of a vacuum cleaner. Heavy soiling should be removed with a dry cleaning agentrecommended for this purpose follow- ing the instructions of the product manufacturer. Paint thinner, solventsor other such cleaning materials should not be used since damage to the up- holstery may result. JE120A1-E WINDOWS A proprietary glass cleaner should be used to clean the inside of the win-dows. However, the rear heated windscreen must only be cleaned us- ing a light horizontal cleaning action.Care should be exercised to avoid the use of abrasive cleaners or contact with items of jewellery which may dam-age the heating elements. YE010A1-E To Clean Leather Upholstery (Not all models) In the normal course of use, leather upholstered surfaces will, like any material, pick-up dust and dirt. Thisdust and dirt MUST be cleaned off or it may work into the surface of the leather, causing damage.Fine leather needs care. This care, as with all fine things, need not be elabo- rated, but should include cleaning whennecessary. Washing leather thoroughly with soap and water will keep your leather lustrous, beautiful and ensureyou have many years of wear. Take a piece of cheese cloth and using any mild soap and lukewarm water, work up a good lather. Thoroughly wash the leather. Wipe clean with a slightly damp cloth and dry with softcloth. Do this as often as the leather becomes soiled.
