(1) When the atmospheric tempera-ture is moderate or the engine is warm: Start the engine without de- pressing the accelerator pedal.
(2) When the atmospheric tempera- ture is low and the engine iscold:Start the engine while depress- ing the accelerator pedal. If the atmospheric temperature is verylow, setting the ignition switch to "ON" for one or two seconds before attempting to start theengine will make it easier to start.

(1) Do not race or suddenly accelerate
the engine immediately after start- ing it. If the engine is cold, allow theengine to idle for several seconds before it is driven to ensure suffi- cient lubrication of the turbo chargerunit.
(2) After high speed driving or pro-
longed engine loading, the engineshould be allowed to idle, as shown in the following chart, before turn- ing it off.This idle time will allow the turbo charger to cool prior to shutting the engine off.
NOTE: If the engine were not started within 2 seconds after the preheating is completed, turn the ignition key once more to the "LOCK" positionduring 10 seconds, and then to the "ON" position, in order to preheat again.
5. Operate the accelerator pedal asdescribed below in accordance with the atmospheric temperature and/ or engine condition. (Diesel Engine (2.5 TCI) Only)Amber lamp ON

o During cold weather, shifting may
be difficult until the transmis- sion lubricant has warmed up. This is normal and not harmful to the transmission.
o If you 've come to a complete stop and it's hard to shift into 1stor R(Reverse), put the shift leverin N(Neutral) position and release the clutch. Press the clutch pedal back down, and then shift into1st or R(Reverse) gear position.
o Do not use the shift lever as a
handrest during driving, as thiscan result in premature wear of the transmission shift forks.
CAUTION:
When downshifting from fifth gearto fourth gear, caution should be taken not to inadvertently press thegear shift lever sideways in such a manner that second gear is en- gaged. Such a drastic downshiftmay cause the engine speed to in- crease to the point that the tachom- eter will enter the red-zone. Suchover-revving of the engine may possibly cause engine damage.
Your Hyundai's manual transmissionhas a conventional shift pattern. This shift pattern is imprinted on the shiftknob. The transmission is fully syn- chronized in all forward gears so shift- ing to either a higher or a lower gear iseasily accomplished. NOTE:
o To shift into reverse, rest the le-
ver in neutral for at least 3 sec- onds after your car is completely stopped. Then move the leverinto the reverse position.

o Never take the car out of gear and
coast down a hill. This is extremely hazardous. Always leave the car in gear.
o Don't "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and mal-function. Instead, when you are driv- ing down a long hill, slow down andshift to a lower gear. When you do this, engine braking will help slow the car.
o Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. This will help avoid over-rev-ving the engine, which can causedamage.
o Slow down when you encounter
cross winds. This gives you muchbetter control of your car.
o Be sure the car is completely stopped
before you attempt to shift into re-verse. The transmission can be damaged if you do not. To shift into reverse, depress the clutch, movethe shift lever to neutral, wait three seconds, then shift to the reverse position.

C070B01A-AAT Using the Clutch The clutch should be pressed all the way to the floor before shifting, thenreleased slowly. The clutch pedal should always be used after fully re- turning to the original position. Do notrest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving. This can cause unnecessary wear. Do not partially engage the clutchto hold the car on an incline. This causes unnecessary wear. Use the parking brake to hold the car on anincline. Do not operate the clutch pedal rapidly and repeatedly.

o Exercise extreme caution when driv-
ing on a slippery surface. Be espe- cially careful when braking, acceler- ating or shifting gears. On a slippery surface, an abrupt change in ve-hicle speed can cause the drive wheels to lose traction and the ve- hicle to go out of control. o In the event your vehicle leaves
the roadway, do not steer sharply.Instead, slow down before pull- ing back into the travel lanes.
o Never exceed posted speed lim- its.
WARNING:
o Avoid high cornering speeds.
o Do not make quick steering wheel movements, such as sharp lanechanges or fast, sharp turns.
o Always wear your seat belts. In a collision crash, an unbeltedperson is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
o The risk of rollover is greatly in-
creased if you lose control ofyour vehicle at highway speeds.
o Loss of control often occurs if
two or more wheels drop off theroadway and the driver oversteers to reenter the roadway. C090A01HP-GAT (If Installed) The highly efficient Hyundai automatic transmission has four forward speeds and one reverse speed. It has a con-ventional shift pattern as shown in the illustration. At night, with headlights switched on,the appropriate symbol on the quad- rant will be illuminated according to the range selected.

o P (Park): Use to hold the vehicle in place when parked or while starting the engine. Whenever parking the car, apply theparking brake and shift the selector lever to the "P" (Park) position.
CAUTION:
Never place the selector lever in the"P" (Park) position unless the ve- hicle is fully stopped.Failure to observe this caution will cause severe damage to the trans- mission. C090C01A-AAT
o R (Reverse): Use for backing up the vehicle. Bring the car to a complete stop before shifting the selector lever to "R" posi-tion. C090D01HP-GAT
o N (Neutral): In the "N" position, the transmission is in neutral, which means that no gearsare engaged. The engine can be started with the shift lever in "N" position, although this is not recommended ex-cept if the engine stalls while the car is moving.

o D (Drive): Use for normal driving. The transmis- sion will automatically shift through a four-gear sequence, giving besteconomy and power. Never down-shift manually to "2" position or "L" position when vehicle speed is more than 96km/h (60 mph).
CAUTION:
Never shift into "R" or "P" positionwhile the vehicle is moving.
NOTE: Depress the brake pedal andpush the button when shifting. Push the button when shifting. The selector lever can beshifted freely.
For optimum fuel economy, acceler- ate gradually. The transmission will automatically shift to the second, thirdand overdrive gears.

o 2 (Second gear): Use for driving on slippery road hill climbing or engine braking downhill."2" automatically shifts between 1st and 2nd gears. This means that no shift-up to 3rd gearis performed. However, the shift-up to 3rd gear is done when the car speed exceeds a certain value to prevent theengine from over-running. Manually move the selector to "D" returning to normal driving condition. o L (Low gear): Use for driving up a very steep grade or for engine braking when descendingsteep hills. When downshifting to "L", the transmission will temporarily re- main in second gear until the vehiclehas slowed enough for low gear to engage. Do not exceed 50 km/h (30 mph) in low gear."L" engages 1st gear only. However, shift-up to 2nd is performed when the vehicle exceeds a certain speed, andas the speed increases, shift-up to 3rd gear occurs to prevent over-running the engine.C090H01HP-DAT
CAUTION:
o P (Park): Use this range to park the vehicle. This range is also used when en-gine is started and warmed up.
o N (Neutral): The engine can be started in this range, but the use of "P" range is recommended for safer start up. NOTE:
o For smooth operation, depress the brake pedal when shifting from NEUTRAL or PARK to a for-ward or reverse gear.
o The ignition key must be in the
"ON" position and the brake pedalfully depressed in order to move the shift lever from the "P" (Park) position to any of the other posi-tions.
o It is always possible to shift from
"R", "N", "D", "2", "L" positionsto "P" position. However, the vehicle must be fully stopped to avoid transmission damage.

C090J01HP-DAT OVERDRIVE SWITCH When the overdrive switch is turned on, the transmission will automatically upshift to the second, third and over- drive gears. When the overdrive switchis turned off, the transmission will not upshift to the overdrive gear at all. For normal driving, the selector levershould be left in the "D" position and the overdrive switch turned on. If you need to accelerate rapidly, press the accelerator pedal all the way to thefloor. The transmission will automati- cally shift to a lower gear, depending on the speed. NOTE: Turn the overdrive switch on for good fuel economy and smooth driving. If engine braking is neededin the "D" range or if repeated up- shifting and downshifting between the 3rd and 4th gear is needed whenclimbing a gentle slope, it is recom- mended that the overdrive switch be turned off. Turn the overdriveswitch back on immediately after- ward.

Knob position This is used to set different positions. 2H(Rear-wheel drive) When driving on normal roads and highway. 4H(High range 4-wheel drive) When driving off-road, wet or snow- covered roads with normal speed. The 4WD HIGH indicator light ( )will be turned on to remind you that you are in the 4H mode. 4L(Low range 4-wheel drive) Use "4L" for climbing or descending steep hills, off-road driving, and towingthe vehicle. Especially when increased drive power is required. The 4WD LOW indicator light ( ) willbe turned on to remind you that you are in the 4L mode.
CAUTION:
Do not select 4WD (4H or 4L) mode on dry paved roads. Especially on dry highway, never select the 4WD mode.Four-wheel driving on dry paved roads for a long period will increase the fuel consumption with possiblenoise generation and early tire wear. In addition, axle gear oil tempera- ture increases with possible driv-ing system part wear.

2. Transfer shift knob operation By turning the transfer shift knob(4H, 4L), both axles of the vehicle are rigidlyconnected with each other. This im- proves the traction characteristics. 2H

Turn the transfer shift knob from the 2H mode to the 4H mode at speed below 80 km/h. It is not necessary to depress the clutch pedal (ManualTransmission) or put the shift lever into "N(neutral)" position (Automatic Trans- mission). Perform this operation whendriving straight. 4H

D090E02HP-GAT Driving Four-wheel drive safely
o The driving posture should be more
upright and closer to the wheel than usual; adjust the seat to a good position for easy steering and pedal operation.
o Be sure to wear the seat belt.
o Drive carefully when off the road
and avoid dangerous areas.
o 4WD has higher ground clearance and a narrower track to make them capable of performing in a widevariety of off road applications. Spe- cific design characteristics give them a higher center of gravity than ordi-nary cars. An advantage of the higher ground clearance is a better view of the road allowing you toanticipate problems. They are not designed for cornering at the same speeds as conventional 2-wheeldrive vehicles any more than low- slung sports cars are designed to perform satisfactorily under off-roadconditions. If at all possible, avoid sharp turns or abrupt maneuvers.
