WARNING
•Before leaving the driver’s seat, al‐ways set the parking brake fullyand shut the engine off. Thenmake sure the transaxle is shiftedinto 1st gear when the vehicle isparked on a level or uphill grade,and shifted into R (Reverse) on adownhill grade. Unexpected andsudden vehicle movement can oc‐cur if these precautions are notfollowed in the order identified.
•Do not use the engine brake (shift‐ing from a high gear to lower gear)rapidly on slippery roads.The vehicle may slip causing an ac‐cident.
Using the clutch
The clutch should be pressed all theway to the floor before shifting, then
released slowly. The clutch pedal should
always be fully released while driving. Do not rest your foot on the clutch
pedal while driving. This can cause un‐
necessary wear. Do not partially en‐ gage the clutch to hold the vehicle on
an incline. This causes unnecessary
wear. Use the foot brake or parking brake to hold the vehicle on an incline.
Do not operate the clutch pedal rapidly
and repeatedly.
CAUTION
When operating the clutch pedal,press the clutch pedal down fully. Ifyou don’t press the clutch pedalfully, the clutch may be damaged ornoise may occur.
Downshifting
When you must slow down in heavy
traffic or while driving up steep hills, downshift before the engine starts to
labor. Downshifting reduces the chance
of stalling and gives better acceleration when you again need to increase your
speed. When the vehicle is traveling
down steep hills, downshifting helps maintain safe speed and prolongs brake life.
Good driving practices
• Never take the vehicle out of gear and coast down a hill. This is ex‐
tremely hazardous. Always leave the vehicle in gear.
• Don't "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and malfunc‐
tion. Instead, when you are driving
down a long hill, shift to a lower gear.
When you do this, engine braking will help slow down the vehicle.
• Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. This will help avoid over-revving
the engine, which can cause damage.
• Slow down when you encounter cross winds. This gives you much better
control of your vehicle.

WARNING
If your vehicle becomes stuck insnow, mud, sand, etc., then you mayattempt to rock the vehicle free bymoving it forward and backward. Donot attempt this procedure if peopleor objects are anywhere near the ve‐hicle. During the rocking operationthe vehicle may suddenly move for‐ward of backward as it becomes un‐stuck, causing injury or damage tonearby people or objects.
Moving up a steep grade from a
standing start
To move up a steep grade from a
standing start, depress the brake pedal,
shift the shift lever to D (Drive). Select the appropriate gear depending on load
weight and steepness of the grade, and
release the parking brake. Depress the accelerator gradually while releasing
the service brakes.
When accelerating from a stop on asteep hill, the vehicle may have a ten‐dency to roll backwards. Shifting theshift lever into 2 (Second Gear) will helpprevent the vehicle from rolling back‐wards.

• Under some conditions your parkingbrake can freeze in the engaged posi‐
tion. This is most likely to happen when there is an accumulation of
snow or ice around or near the rear
brakes or if the brakes are wet. If
there is a risk that the parking brake
may freeze, apply it only temporarily while you put the shift lever in P (au‐
tomatic transaxle) or in first or re‐
verse gear (manual transaxle) and
block the rear wheels so the vehicle
cannot roll. Then release the parking brake.
• Do not hold the vehicle on the up‐ grade with the accelerator pedal. This
can cause the transaxle to overheat.
Always use the brake pedal or park‐ ing brake.WARNING
•To prevent unintentional move‐ment when stopped and leavingthe vehicle, do not use the gear‐shift lever in place of the parkingbrake. Set the parking brake ANDmake sure the gearshift lever issecurely positioned in P (Park) forautomatic transaxle equipped ve‐hicles.
•Never allow anyone who is unfa‐miliar with the vehicle to touch theparking brake. If the parking brakeis released unintentionally, seriousinjury may occur.
•All vehicles should always have theparking brake fully engaged whenparking to avoid inadvertentmovement of the vehicle whichcan injure occupants or pedes‐trians.

Check the brake warning light by turn‐
ing the ignition switch ON (do not start the engine). This light will be illumina‐
ted when the parking brake is applied
with the ignition switch in the START or ON position.
Before driving, be sure the parking
brake is fully released and the brake
warning light is off.
If the brake warning light remains on after the parking brake is released
while engine is running, there may be a
malfunction in the brake system. Im‐ mediate attention is necessary.

• On loose or uneven road surfaces, op‐eration of the anti-lock brake system
may result in a longer stopping dis‐
tance than for vehicles equipped with a conventional brake system.

CAUTION
•If the ABS warning light is on andstays on, you may have a problemwith the ABS. In this case, howev‐er, your regular brakes will worknormally.

•The ABS warning light will stay onfor approximately 3 seconds afterthe ignition switch is ON. Duringthat time, the ABS will go throughself-diagnosis and the light will gooff if everything is normal. If thelight stays on, you may have aproblem with your ABS. In thiscase, have the system checked bya professional workshop. Kia rec‐ommends to visit an authorizedKia dealer/service partner.
CAUTION
•When you drive on a road havingpoor traction, such as an icy road,and operate your brakes continu‐ously, the ABS will be active con‐tinuously and the ABS warninglight may illuminate. Pull your carover to a safe place and stop theengine.

•Restart the engine. If the ABSwarning light is off, then your ABSsystem is normal. Otherwise, youmay have a problem with the ABS.In this case, have the systemchecked by a professional work‐shop. Kia recommends to visit anauthorized Kia dealer/service part‐ner.
NOTICE
When you jump start your vehicle
because of a drained battery, the
engine may not run as smoothly and
the ABS warning light may turn on
at the same time. This happens be‐
cause of the low battery voltage. It
does not mean your ABS is malfunc‐
tioning.
•Do not pump your brakes!
•Have the battery recharged before
driving the vehicle.

ESC operation
ESC ON condition
-• When the ignition is turnedON, ESC and ESC OFF indica‐ tor lights illuminate for ap‐
proximately 3 seconds, then
ESC is turned on.
• Press the ESC OFF button after turning the ignition ONto turn ESC off. (ESC OFF in‐
dicator will illuminate). To
turn the ESC on, press theESC OFF button (ESC OFF in‐dicator light will go off).
• When starting the engine, you may hear a slight tickingsound. This is the ESC per‐forming an automatic sys‐tem self-check and does notindicate a problem.
When operating
When the ESC is in operation, the ESC indicator light blinks.
• When the Electronic Stability Control is operating proper‐ly, you can feel a slight pul‐
sation in the vehicle. This is
only the effect of brake con‐trol and indicates nothingunusual.
• When moving out of the mud or driving on a slippery
road, the engine rpm (revo‐lution per minute) may not
be increased even if you
press the accelerator pedaldeeply. This is to maintainthe stability and traction of
the vehicle and does not in‐dicate a problem.
ESC OFF condition
To cancel ESC operation :
• State 1
Press the ESC OFF button shortly (ESC
OFF indicator light and message illumi‐ nates). At this state, the engine control
function does not operate. In other
words, the traction control function does not operate but only the brake
control function operates.

• State 2
Press the ESC OFF button for more
than 3 seconds. ESC OFF indicator light
and message illuminates and ESC OFF
warning chime will sound. At this state,
the engine control function and brake control function does not operate. In
other words, the vehicle stability con‐
trol function does not operate any more.
If the ignition switch is placed to the
LOCK/OFF position when ESC is off, ESC
remains off. Upon restarting the en‐ gine, the ESC will automatically turn on
again.
Indicator light

When ignition switch is turned to ON,
the indicator light illuminates, then goes off if the ESC system is operating
normally.
The ESC indicator light blinks whenever
ESC is operating or illuminates when ESC fails to operate.
ESC OFF indicator light comes on when
the ESC is turned off with the button.
CAUTION
Driving with varying tire or wheelsizes may cause the ESC system tomalfunction. When replacing tires,

make sure they are the same size asyour original tires.
WARNING
The Electronic Stability Control sys‐tem is only a driving aid; use precau‐tions for safe driving by slowingdown on curved, snowy, or icy roads.Drive slowly and don’t attempt toaccelerate whenever the ESC indica‐tor light is blinking, or when the roadsurface is slippery.
ESC OFF usage
When driving
• ESC should be turned on for daily driving whenever possible.
• To turn ESC off while driving, press the ESC OFF button while driving on aflat road surface.
Never press the ESC OFF button while
ESC is operating (ESC indicator light
blinks).
If ESC is turned off while ESC is operat‐ ing, the vehicle may slip out of control.

NOTICE
•When operating the vehicle on a
dynamometer, ensure that the
ESC is turned off (ESC OFF light il‐
luminated).
•Turning the ESC off does not af‐
fect ABS or brake system opera‐
tion.
WARNING
Never press the ESC OFF buttonwhile ESC is operating.If the ESC is turned off while ESC isoperating, the vehicle may go out ofcontrol.To turn ESC off while driving, pressthe ESC OFF button while driving ona flat road surface.
Hill-start assist control (HAC) (if
equipped)
Hill start Assist Control is a comfort
function. The main intend is to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards
while driving off uphill on an inclined
surface. HAC holds the braking pressure
builtup by driver during stopping proce‐ dure for 2 seconds after releasing
brake pedal.
During the pressure-hold period, the
driver has enough time to press the ac‐ celerator pedal to drive off.
The braking pressure is reduced as
soon as the system detects the driver’s
intention to drive off.
WARNING
The HAC is usually activated only for2 seconds. The driver should becareful from the rolling backwardcausing the accident with behind ob‐jects or human, when the driver mayfeel the unintended rolling backwardwhile driving off on hill due to insuf‐ficient brake hold pressure built-upby driver during stopping procedure.
NOTICE
•The HAC does not operate when
the transaxle shift lever is in the P
(Park) or N (Neutral) position.
•The HAC activates even though
the ESC is off but it does not acti‐
vate when the ESC has malfunc‐
tioned.
Vehicle stability management
(VSM) (if equipped)
This system provides further enhance‐
ments to vehicle stability and steering responses when a vehicle is driving on a
slippery road or a vehicle detected
changes in coefficient of friction be‐ tween right wheels and left wheels
when braking.
VSM operation
When the VSM is in operation, ESC indi‐
cator light () blinks.
When the vehicle stability management
is operating properly, you can feel a slight pulsation in the vehicle. This is
only the effect of brake control and in‐
dicates nothing unusual.

CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED)
The cruise control system allows you to
program the vehicle to maintain a con‐
stant speed without pressing the accel‐ erator pedal.
This system is designed to function
above approximately 30 km/h (20
mph).
WARNING
•If the cruise control is left on,(CRUISE indicator light in the in‐strument cluster illuminated) thecruise control can be switched onaccidentally. Keep the cruise con‐trol system off (CRUISE indicatorlight OFF) when the cruise controlis not in use, to avoid inadvertent‐ly setting a speed.
•Use the cruise control system onlywhen traveling on open highwaysin good weather.

•Do not use the cruise control whenit may not be safe to keep the carat a constant speed, for instance,driving in heavy or varying traffic,or on slippery (rainy, icy or snow-covered) or winding roads or over6% uphill or down-hill roads.
•Pay particular attention to thedriving conditions whenever usingthe cruise control system.
CAUTION
During cruise-speed driving of amanual transaxle vehicle, do notshift into neutral without depressingthe clutch pedal, since the enginewill be over-revved. If this happens,depress the clutch pedal or releasethe cruise control ON-OFF switch.
NOTICE
During normal cruise control opera‐
tion, when the SET switch is activa‐
ted or reactivated after applying the
brakes, the cruise control will ener‐
gize after approximately 3 seconds.
This delay is normal.
NOTICE
To activate cruise control, depress
the brake pedal at least once after
turning the ignition switch to the ON
position or starting the engine. This
is to check if the brake switch which
is important part to cancel cruise
control is in normal condition.

should depress the brake pedal at
least once to set the cruise control
after starting the engine.

nate. Release the accelerator pedal
at the same time. The desired
speed will automatically be main‐

On a steep grade, the vehicle may slow

DRIVER ATTENTION WARNING (DAW) SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED)
The Driver Attention Warning (DAW)
system displays the condition of the
driver's fatigue level and inattentive driving practices.
System setting and activation
System setting
• The Driver Attention Warning system is set to be in the OFF position, when
your vehicle is first delivered to you from the factory.
• To turn ON the Driver Attention Warning system, turn on the engine,
and then select 'User Settings
Driving Assist Driver Attention
Warning Normal/Early' on the LCD
display.
• The driver can select the Driver At‐ tention Warning system mode.- Off: The Driver Attention Warning system is deactivated.
- Normal: The Driver Attention Warning system alerts the driver
of his/her fatigue level or inatten‐
tive driving practices.
- Early: The Driver Attention Warn‐ ing system alerts the driver of
his/her fatigue level or inattentive
driving practices faster than Nor‐mal mode. • The set-up of the Driver Attention
Warning system will be maintained,as selected, when the engine is re‐
started.
