Seat belt precautions
WARNING
•All occupants of the vehicle mustwear their seat belts at all times.Seat belts and child restraints re‐duce the risk of serious or fatal in‐juries for all occupants in the eventof a collision or sudden stop. With‐out a seat belt, occupants could beshifted too close to a deploying airbag, strike the interior structureor be thrown from the vehicle.Properly worn seat belts greatlyreduce these hazards.Always follow the precautionsabout seat belts, air bags and oc‐cupant safety contained in thismanual.
•Never wear a seat belt over fragileobjects. If there is a sudden stopor impact, the seat belt can dam‐age it.
Infant or small child
You should be aware of the specific re‐quirements in your country. Child
and/or infant seats must be properly
placed and installed in the rear seat. For more information about the use of
these restraints, refer to L

•Keep the SRS parts and wiringsaway from water or any liquid. Ifthe SRS components are inopera‐tive due to exposure to water orliquids, it may cause fire or severeinjury.
How does the air bag system
operate
• Air bags are activated (able to inflateif necessary) only when the ignition
switch is turned to the ON or START position.
• Air bags inflate instantly in the event of a serious frontal collision or side
collision (if equipped with a side air
bag or curtain air bag) in order to
help protect the occupants from seri‐ ous physical injury.
NOTICE
nIf equipped with rollover sen‐
sor
(Continued)
(Continued)
Also, the air bags inflate instantly in
the event of a rollover (if equipped
with a side air bag or curtain air bag)
in order to help protect the occu‐
pants from serious physical injury.
• In normal conditions, the airbag is de‐ signed to deploy based on certain an‐
gle and intensity of the collision. These two factors are crucial ele‐
ments for deciding whether to trans‐
mit airbag deployment signal or start
the electrical operation or not.
• The airbag will deploy based on angle and intensity of the collision. It willnot deploy in every crash or collision
situations.
• The front air bags will completely in‐ flate and deflate in an instant.
It is virtually impossible for you to
see the air bags inflate during an ac‐
cident.
It is much more likely that you will simply see the deflated air bags
hanging out of their storage com‐
partments after the collision. • In order to help provide protection in
a severe collision, the air bags mustinflate rapidly. The speed of the air
bag inflation is a consequence of ex‐
tremely short time in which a collision
occurs and the need to inflate the air
bag between the occupant and the vehicle structures before the occu‐
pant impacts those structures.
This speed of inflation reduces the
risk of serious or life-threatening in‐
juries in a severe collision and is thus
a necessary part of the air bag de‐ sign.
However, air bag inflation can also
cause injuries which can include facial
abrasions, bruises and broken bones
because the inflation speed also cau‐ ses the air bags to expand with a
great deal of force.

There are even circumstances underwhich contact with the steeringwheel air bag can cause fatal injuries, especially if the occupant is posi‐tioned excessively close to the steer‐ing wheel.

WARNING
•To avoid severe personal injury ordeath caused by deploying air bagsin a collision, the driver should sitas far back from the steeringwheel air bag as possible (at least250 mm (10 inches) away). Thefront passengers should alwaysmove their seats as far back aspossible and sit back in their seat.
•Air bags inflate instantly in theevent of a collision, and passen‐gers may be injured by the air bagexpansion force if they are not in aproper position.
•Air bag inflation may cause injuriesincluding facial or bodily abrasions, injuries from broken glasses orburns.
Noise and smoke
When the air bags inflate, they make a
loud noise and they leave smoke and
powder in the air inside of the vehicle. This is normal and is a result of the ig‐
nition of the air bag inflator. After the
air bag inflates, you may feel substan‐ tial discomfort in breathing due to the
contact of your chest with both the
seat belt and the air bag, as well as from breathing the smoke and powder.
Open your doors and/or windows assoon as possible after impact in orderto reduce discomfort and prevent pro‐longed exposure to the smoke andpowder.
Though the smoke and powder are non-toxic, they may cause irritation to
the skin (eyes, nose and throat, etc). If
this is the case, wash and rinse with cold water immediately and consult a
doctor if the symptom persists.
WARNING
When the air bags deploy, the airbag related parts in the steeringwheel and/or instrument paneland/or in both sides of the roof rails

To prevent injury, do nottouch the air bag storage area’s in‐ternal components immediately af‐ter an air bag has inflated.Do not install or place any accesso‐ries near air bag deployment areas, such as the instrument panel, win‐dows, pillars, and roof rails.

Never place a rear-facing child restraint
in the front passenger’s seat. If the air bag deploys, it would impact the rear-
facing child restraint, causing serious or
fatal injury.
In addition, do not place a front-facing child restraints in the front passenger’s
seat. If the front passenger air bag in‐
flates, it could cause serious or fatal in‐ juries to the child.
If your vehicle is equipped with the pas‐
senger’s front air bag ON/OFF switch,
you can activate or deactivate the front passenger’s air bag when neces‐
sary.
WARNING
•Extreme Hazard! Do not use arearward facing child restraint ona seat protected by an air bag infront of it!

•The SRS is designed to deploy thefront air bags only when an impactis sufficiently severe and when theimpact angle is less than 30° fromthe forward longitudinal axis ofthe vehicle. Additionally, the airbags will only deploy once. Seatbelts must be worn at all times.
•Front air bags are not intended todeploy in side-impact, rear-impactor rollover crashes. In addition, front air bags will not deploy infrontal crashes below the deploy‐ment threshold.
•A child restraint system must nev‐er be placed in the front seat. Theinfant or child could be severely in‐jured or killed by an air bag deploy‐ment in case of an accident.

•Children age 12 and under must al‐ways be properly restrained in therear seat. Never allow children toride in the front passenger seat. Ifa child over 12 must be seated inthe front seat, he or she must beproperly belted and the seatshould be moved as far back aspossible.
•For maximum safety protection inall types of crashes, all occupantsincluding the driver should alwayswear their seat belts whether ornot an air bag is also provided attheir seating position to minimizethe risk of severe injury or death inthe event of a crash. Do not sit orlean unnecessarily close to the airbag while the vehicle is in motion.

•Sitting improperly or out of posi‐tion can result in serious or fatalinjury in a crash. All occupantsshould sit upright with the seatback in an upright position, cen‐tered on the seat cushion withtheir seat belt on, legs comforta‐bly extended and their feet on thefloor until the vehicle is parked andthe ignition key is removed.
•The SRS air bag system must de‐ploy very rapidly to provide pro‐tection in a crash. If an occupant isout of position because of notwearing a seat belt, the air bagmay forcefully contact the occu‐pant causing serious or fatal inju‐ries.

WARNING
•The driver is responsible for theproper position of the passenger’sfront air bag ON/OFF switch.
•Deactivate the passenger's frontair bag only when the ignitionswitch is switched off, or the mal‐function may occur in the SRSControl Module. And there may be a danger thatthe driver's and/or front passeng‐er’s and/or side and curtain air bagmay fail to trigger, or not triggercorrectly during a collision.

•Never install a rearward facingchild seat on the front passenger'sseat unless the passenger's frontair bag has been deactivated. Theinfant or child could be severely in‐jured or killed by an air bag deploy‐ment in case of an accident.
•Even though your vehicle is equip‐ped with the passenger's front airbag ON/OFF switch, do not install achild restraint system in the frontpassenger's seat. A child restraintsystem must never be placed inthe front seat. Children who aretoo large for child restraint sys‐tems should always occupy therear seat and use the available lap/shoulder belts. Children are affor‐ded the most safety in the eventof an accident when they are re‐strained by a proper restraint sys‐tem in the rear seat.
•As soon as the child seat is no lon‐ger needed on the front passeng‐er's seat, reactivate the front pas‐senger's air bag.

•Never place or insert any object in‐to any small opening near side air‐bag labels attached to the vehicleseats. When the air bag deploys, the object may affect the deploy‐ment and result in unexpected ac‐cident or bodily harm.
WARNING
nNo attaching objects
No objects (such as crash pad cover, cellular phone holder, cup holder, perfume or stickers) should beplaced over or near the air bag mod‐ules on the steering wheel, instru‐ment panel, windshield glass, andthe front passenger's panel abovethe glove box. Such objects couldcause harm if the vehicle is in acrash severe enough to cause the airbags to deploy. Do not place any ob‐jects over the air bag or between theair bag and yourself.
Side air bag (if equipped)
Front
Your vehicle is equipped with a side im‐
pact air bag in each front seat. The purpose of the air bag is to provide the
vehicle's driver and the front passenger
with additional protection than that of‐ fered by the seat belt alone.
The side air bags are designed to de‐
ploy only during certain side-impact
collisions, depending on the crash se‐ verity, angle, speed and point of im‐
pact. The side impact air bags are not
designed to deploy in all side impact situations.
WARNING
Do not allow the passengers to leantheir heads or bodies onto doors, puttheir arms on the doors, stretchtheir arms out of the window, orplace objects between the doors andpassengers when they are seated onseats equipped with side and/or cur‐tain air bags.
