Air conditioning system
7KHDLUFRQGLWLRQLQJV\VWHPSURYLGHGZLWKWKHYHKLFOHKROGVWKHWHPSHUDWXUHDQGDLUÀRZLQWKHSDVVHQJHUFRPSDUWPHQW
to the values set by the driver and the passenger. The air conditioning system has the following features:•
automatic temperature-ventilation-air distribution control
• recirculation
•  DLUÀRZGLVWULEXWLRQ
The system’s operation is controlled by a special electronic control unit set by the driver and passenger on the
control unit’s push-button panel.
The system has an air conditioning unit ( B-Fig.1 WKDWPRGL¿HVWKHWHPSHUDWXUHDQGKXPLGLW\RIWKHDLUHQWHULQJWKH
vehicle by means of two radiators (driver and passenger side) connected to a heating system that receives heat from
the engine (green lines) and an evaporator, part of an air conditioning system (red and blue lines).

The air conditioning unit has two parts: •
ventilation unit outside the passenger compartment in the luggage compartment, equipped with an air
conveyor
• heating, cooling, and air distribution unit inside the passenger compartment under the dashboard

The ventilation unit takes in external air through the conveyor by means of a fan and sends it to the heating, cooling
and distribution unit. The fan is also used to recirculate the air inside the passenger compartment.The fan has:• an intake air temperature sensor

Air conditioning system
The evaporator inside the air conditioning unit is powered by a compressor located next to the engine. The system’s
condenser is installed in front of the right front radiator of the engine’s cooling system.The coolant used by the air conditioning system is R134a.

Air conditioner control unit
The automatic dual zone control unit is built into the push-button panel on the console. It separately controls the following parameters on the LH and RH sides of the passenger compartment:

These parameters, except for the temperature, are manually controlled by pressing the relative buttons (an LED comes on) and using the knobs (A-Fig.9). The display ( B-Fig.9) shows the value.

  7KHWHPSHUDWXUHFDQEHDGMXVWHGEHWZHHQƒ&DQGƒ&,IWKHSURJUDPPHGYDOXHH[FHHGVWKHVHOLPLWV on the display, LOor HI appears and the temperature is no longer adjusted.
The
button completely blocks air from entering the passenger compartment.
The

Ventilation is possible in the passenger compartment even when the engine key is on OFF by simply keeping the

The control unit continuously adjusts the system according to driver and passenger requests (RH and LH). In particular:•It acquires information on internal (RH and LH) and outside temperature and on solar irradiation intensity by
means of special sensors.
• It sets the speed of the air entering the passenger compartment by means of the fan.
•  ,WFRQWUROVWKHRSHQLQJFORVLQJRIWKHDLUGLVWULEXWLRQÀDSV
• It controls air recirculation by means of an actuator.
• It controls the incoming hot air temperature by means of two solenoid valves (RH and LH) and a circulation
pump.
• It controls compressor activation.

The control unit ( A-Fig.10) implements the heat regulating strategies according to input received from the following
sensors:• outside air temperature ( B-Fig.10)
• internal air temperature (RH and LH) ( C-Fig.10)
• Vent outlet air temperature ( D-Fig.10)
• Solar irradiation ( E-Fig.10)
The control unit memory contains a resident program, composed of a set of strategies, each of which manages a VSHFL¿FIXQFWLRQRIWKHFRQWUROV\VWHP
The strategies process a set of parameters by means of the above inputs and memorized data maps. These
parameters control the system actuators (outputs), that is those devices causing the system to reach and hold a comfortable temperature inside the passenger compartment. The devices are the following:• Air distribution actuator ( F-Fig.10)
• Motor fan ( G-Fig.10)
• Recirculation actuator ( H-Fig.10)
