STARTING UP AND DRIVING155
3
The ABS with which the car may be equipped
will not control the braking system of the
trailer. Take specific care when travelling on
slippery roads.
Never modify the braking system of the car
to control the trailer brake. The trailer brak-
ing system must be fully independent from
the hydraulic system of the car.
SNOW TYRES
Use snow tyres of the same size as the normal tyres pro-
vided with the car.
A Lancia Dealership will be happy to provide advice con-
cerning the most suitable type of tyre for your require-
ments.
For the type of tyre to be used, inflation pressures and the
specifications of snow tyres, follow the instructions given
in paragraph “Wheels” in chapter “6”.
The performance of these tyres is considerably reduced
when the tread thickness is less than 4 mm. Replace them
in this case.Due to their specific features, the performance of snow
tyres is much lower than that of standard tyres in nor-
mal conditions or long motorway stretches. Limit their use
to the use for which they were approved.
IMPORTANT When using snow tyres with a maximum
speed rating different from that of the vehicle (increased
by 5%), place a clearly visible warning sign in the pas-
senger compartment warning other drivers of the maxi-
mum speed rating of the snow tyres used (as required by
EC directive).
All four tyres should be the same (brand and track) to en-
sure greater safety when driving, during braking and bet-
ter driveability.
Remember that it is inappropriate to change the direction
of rotation of tyres.
Snow tyres marked with a “Q” must not ex-
ceed 160 km/h, respecting the applicable
rules of the Highway Code.

158IN AN EMERGENCY
STARTING THE ENGINE
Go to a Lancia Dealership immediately if instrument pan-
el warning light
Yremains on constantly.
JUMP STARTING fig. 1
If the battery is flat, the engine may be started using an
auxiliary battery with the same capacity or a little high-
er than the flat one.
Proceed as follows to start the car:
connect the positive terminals (+ sign near the termi-
nal) of the two batteries with a jump lead;
with a second lead, connect the negative terminal –
of the auxiliary battery to an earth point E
on the en-
gine or the gearbox of the car to be started;
start the engine;
when engine has started, remove the cables by revers-
ing the sequence described for connection.
fig. 1L0E0074m
Never use a quick battery charger for an
emergency start: this could damage the elec-
tronic systems and the engine fuel feed and
ignition control units.
This starting procedure must be carried out
by expert personnel as incorrect manoeuvres
can cause electrical discharges of consider-
able intensity. Furthermore, battery fluid is poiso-
nous and corrosive: avoid contact with your skin
and eyes. Keep naked flames away from the battery.
No smoking. Do not cause sparks.

REPLACING A WHEEL
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
The vehicle can be provided with (if requested/provid-
ed) a small spare wheel.
Wheel changing and correct use of the jack and of the
small spare wheel call for some precautions as listed
below.
The small spare wheel (if provided) is spe-
cific for your car. Do not use it on different
models of car. Do not use spare wheels from
different models on your car. The small spare wheel
must only be used in an emergency. Never use it for
more than strictly necessary and never exceed 80
km/h. On the small spare wheel there is an orange
label, summarizing the main warnings regarding
small spare wheel usage restrictions.
Never remove or cover the label. Never apply
any hub cap on the small spare wheel. The
label contains the following indications in
four languages: Warning! For temporary use only!
80 km/h max! Replace as soon as possible with a
standard service wheel. Never cover this indication.
If you choose to install wheels of a different type
(with alloy rims instead of steel ones) you must al-
so change all the wheel retaining bolts with others
of a suitable size.
Indicate that the car is stationary according
to the laws in force: hazard warning lights,
refracting warning triangle, etc. Passengers
should leave the car, particularly if it is very loaded
and wait for the wheel to be changed away from on-
coming traffic. In the event of a wheel change on a
slope or on unsurfaced roads, chock the wheels.

202CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Thousands of kilometres
Check engine management system operation (via diagnostic socket)
Replace auxiliary drive belt
Replace toothed timing drive belt (*)
Replace fuel filter
Replace air filter cartridge
Change engine oil and oil filter (versions without DPF)(or every 24 months)
Change engine oil and oil filter (versions with DPF)(**)
Change brake fluid (or every 24 months)
Change pollen filter (or every 15 months)
(*) Regardless of the km covered, the timing belt should be replaced every 4 years for particularly demanding use (cold climates,
driving in the city, idling for a long time) or in any case every 5 years.
(**) The engine oil and oil filter should be changed when the warning light on the dashboard comes on (see “Instrument panel warn-
ing lights”) or every 2 years.

AIR FILTER/ POLLEN FILTER
Have the air filter or pollen filter replaced by a Lancia
Dealership.
DIESEL FUEL FILTER
DRAINING CONDENSED WATER
(Multijet versions) E-fig. 2-3
The presence of water in the feeding circuit
may cause severe damage to the injection sys-
tem and irregular engine operation. If the
warning light
cgoes on, contact a Lancia Dealer-
ship as soon as possible to have the system bled.
Water may have been introduced in the tank if this
appears immediately after refuelling: in this case,
stop the engine immediately and contact a Lancia
Dealership.

BATTERY
The battery F-fig, 1-2-3 provided with this vehicle is a
“Reduced maintenance” battery: no top-ups with distilled
water are needed in normal conditions of use.
It should nevertheless be periodically checked by a Lan-
cia Dealership or specialised personnel to check its effi-
ciency.
The battery fluid is poisonous and corrosive.
Avoid contact with the skin and eyes. Keep
naked flames and sources of sparks away
from the battery: risk of explosion and fire.
Running the battery with an excessively low
liquid level will damage the battery beyond
repair and even cause an explosion.
CHANGING THE BATTERY
If required, replace the battery with a genuine spare part
with the same specifications.
If a battery with different specifications is fitted, the ser-
vice intervals given in the “Scheduled Service Plan” will
no longer be valid.
Refer therefore to the instructions provided by the battery
manufacturer.
If the battery is disconnected, the áwarning light will co-
me on (together with a message in the display) to indica-
te that the system must be realigned. To switch the war-
ning light off, carry out the following initialization pro-
cedure:
turn the ignition key to the ON position;
turn the steering wheel fully both clockwise and anti-
clockwise (to move from the position with the wheels
straight);
turn the ignition key to the OFF position and then turn
it back ON.
If the áwarning light does not go out after a few seconds,
seek assistance from a Lancia Dealership.
