can be used.
This vehicle is designed to conform to SAE

601-4. Hybrid system
QWhen accelerating sharply
When the accelerator pedal is
depressed heavily, the power of the
hybrid battery (traction battery) is
added to that of the gasoline engine via
the electric motor (traction motor).
QWhen braking (regenerative brak-
ing)
The wheels operate the electric motor
(traction motor) as a power generator,
and the hybrid battery (traction bat-
tery) is charged.
QRegenerative braking
In the following situations, kinetic energy is
converted to electric energy and decelera-
tion force can be obtained in conjunction
with the recharging of the hybrid battery
(traction battery).
OThe accelerator pedal is released while
driving with the shift lever in D or S.
OThe brake pedal is depressed while driv-
ing with the shift lever in D or S.
QEV indicator
The EV indicator comes on when the vehi-
cle is driven using on ly the electric motor
(traction motor) or the gasoline engine is
stopped.
QConditions in which the gasoline engine
may not stop
The gasoline engine starts and stops auto-
matically. However, it may not stop auto-
matically in the following conditions
*:
ODuring gasoline engine warm-up
ODuring hybrid battery (traction battery) charging
OWhen the temperature of the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery) is high or low
OWhen the heater is switched on
*: Depending on the circumstances, the
gasoline engine may also not stop auto-
matically in other situations.
QCharging the hybrid battery (traction
battery)
As the gasoline engine charges the hybrid
battery (traction battery), the battery does
not need to be charged from an outside
source. However, if the vehicle is left
parked for a long time the hybrid battery
(traction battery) will slowly discharge. For
this reason, be sure to drive the vehicle at
least once every few months for at least 30
minutes or 10 miles (16 km). If the hybrid
battery (traction battery) becomes fully dis-
charged and you are unable to start the
hybrid system, contact your Lexus dealer.
QCharging the 12-volt battery
 P.393
QAfter the 12-volt battery has discharged
or when the terminal has been removed
and installed during exchange, etc.
The gasoline engine may not stop even if
the vehicle is being driven by the hybrid
battery (traction battery). If this continues
for a few days, contact your Lexus dealer.
QSounds and vibratio ns specific to a
hybrid vehicle
There may be no engine sound or vibration
even though the vehicle is able to move with
the “READY” indicator is illuminated. For
safety, apply the parking brake and make
sure to shift the shift lever to P when parked.
The following sounds or vibrations may
occur when the hybrid system is operating
and are not a malfunction:
OMotor sounds may be heard from the
engine compartment.
OSounds may be heard from the hybrid
battery (traction battery) under the rear
seats when the hybrid system starts or
stops.
ORelay operating sounds such as a snap or

611-4. Hybrid system

For safety and security
soft clank will be emitted from the hybrid
battery (traction battery), under the rear
seats, when the hybrid system is started
or stopped.
OSounds from the hybrid system may be
heard when the trunk lid is open.
OSounds may be heard from the transmis-
sion when the gasoline engine starts or
stops, when driving at low speeds, or
during idling.
OEngine sounds may be heard when
accelerating sharply.
OSounds may be heard due to regenera-
tive braking when the brake pedal is
depressed or as the accelerator pedal is
released.
OVibration may be felt when the gasoline
engine starts or stops.
OCooling fan sounds may be heard from
the air intake vent under the rear seat.
QMaintenance, repair, recycling, and dis-
posal
Contact your Lexus dealer regarding main-
tenance, repair, recycling and disposal. Do
not dispose of the vehicle yourself.
QCustomization
Settings (e.g. on/off operation of the EV
indicator) can be changed.
(Customizable features: P.421)
When driving with the gasoline engine
stopped, a sound, which changes in
accordance with the driving speed, will
be played in order to warn people
nearby of the vehicle’s approach. This
sound may be heard inside the vehicle.
The sound will stop when the vehicle
speed exceeds approximately 22 mph
(35 km/h).
QAcoustic Vehicle Alerting System
In the following cases, the Acoustic Vehicle
Alerting System may be difficult for sur-
rounding people to hear.
OIn very noisy areas
OIn the wind or the rain
QIf “Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System
Malfunction Visit your Dealer” is dis-
played on the multi-information display
The system may be malfunctioning. Have
the vehicle inspected by your Lexus dealer.

QRear seat reminder function
OIn order to remind you not to forget lug-
gage, etc. in the rear seat, when the
power switch is turned off after any of the
following conditions are met, a buzzer
will sound and a message will be dis-
played on the multi-information display
for approximately 6 seconds.
• The hybrid system is started within 10 minutes after opening and closing a rear
door.
• A rear door has been opened and closed after the hybrid system was started.
However, if a rear door is opened and then
closed within approximately 2 seconds, the
rear seat reminder function may not oper-
ate.
OThe rear seat reminder function deter-
mines that luggage, etc. has been placed
in a rear seat based on opening and clos-
ing of a rear door. Therefore, depending
on the situation, the rear seat reminder
function may not operate and you may
still forget luggage, etc. in the rear seat,
or it may operate unnecessarily.
OThe rear seat reminder function can be
enabled/disabled. ( P.421)

QTo prevent an accident
Observe the following precautions while
driving the vehicle.
Failure to do so may result in a door
opening and an occupant being thrown
out of the vehicle, resulting in death or
serious injury.
OEnsure that all doors are properly
closed and locked.
ODo not pull the inside handle of the
doors while driving.
Be especially careful for the front
doors, as the doors may be opened
even if the inside lock buttons are in
locked position.
OSet the rear door child-protector locks
when children are seated in the rear
seats.
QWhen opening or closing a door
Check the surroundings of the vehicle
such as whether the vehicle is on an
incline, whether there is enough space
for a door to open and whether a strong
wind is blowing. When opening or clos-
ing the door, hold the door handle tightly
to prepare for any unpredictable move-
ment.

QWhen adjusting the seat position
OTake care when adjusting the seat
position to ensure that other passen-
gers are not injured by the moving
seat.
ODo not put your hands under the seat
or near the moving parts to avoid
injury.
Fingers or hands may become
jammed in the seat mechanism.
OMake sure to leave enough space
around the feet so they do not get
stuck.
QSeat adjustment
To reduce the risk of sliding under the lap
belt during a collision, do not recline the
seat more than necessary.
If the seat is too reclined, the lap belt may
slide past the hips and apply restraint
forces directly to the abdomen, or your
neck may contact the shoulder belt,
increasing the risk of death or serious
injury in the event of an accident.
Adjustments should not be made while
driving as the seat may unexpectedly
move and cause the driver to lose con-
trol of the vehicle.
