light is shining into the camera.
= The camera lens is obstructed, dirty or misted
up.
= If cameras or vehicle components in which the
cameras are Ntted are damaged. In this event,
have the cameras, their positions and their setting checked at a qualiNed specialist work-
shop.%Do not use the 360° Camera under such cir-
cumstances. You could otherwise injure oth-
ers or collide with objects when parking the vehicle.
For technical reasons, the standard height of thevehicle may be altered if the vehicle is carrying a
heavy load and can result in inaccuracies in the
guide lines and in the display of the generated
images.
The Neld of vision and other functions of the cam-
era system may be restricted due to additional attachments on the vehicle (e.g. licence plate
bracket, bicycle rack).

Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
qFunction of Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is an electronic park-
ing assistance system which monitors the area
surrounding your vehicle and shows you the dis- tance between the vehicle and a detected obsta-
cle visually and audibly.
The passive side impact protection also warns you
of obstacles to the side. These must be detected
beforehand by the sensors in the front or rear
bumper while driving by them. If you steer in the direction of a detected obstacle and there is a riskof a lateral collision, a warning is issued. The pas-
sive side impact protection can be activated and
deactivated via the multimedia system.
In order for front or rear obstacles to the side to be displayed, the vehicle must Nrst travel a dis-
tance of at least half a vehicle length. Once the vehicle has travelled one vehicle length, obstacleson all sides can be shown.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is only an aid. It is
not a substitute for your attention to the surround- ings. The responsibility for safe manoeuvring and
parking remains with you. Make sure that there
are no persons, animals or objects in the manoeu- vring area while manoeuvring and parking in/exit-ing parking spaces.Messages in the central displayVehicles with 360° CameraVehicles with reversing camera242Driving and parking

As soon as Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is opera-
tional, the respective areas of the display are
shown in blue.1Operational, front and rear2Operational, all around3Operational, all around and obstacle detected
The colour of the display changes depending on the distance to the detected obstacle:
= Blue: > 1 m (no obstacles detected)
= Yellow: approx. 1 m - 0.7 m
= Orange: approx. 0.7 m - 0.4 m
= Red: < 0.4 m

distance of the obstacles detected.
Depending on the distance to the obstacle detec-
ted, an intermittent warning tone also sounds. You can set the timing of the warnings in the multime-
dia system. In the Warn early setting, the system
warns you from a distance of 1 m, in the standard
setting only from 0.4 m.

ing no faster than 18 km/h.
Optionally, obstacles detected by Parking Assist
PARKTRONIC from a distance of approximately 1.0 m in front 2 and 0.7 m on sides 3 can also
be displayed in the head-up display.
System limits
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC does not necessarily
take into account the following obstacles:
= Obstacles below the detection range, e.g. per-
sons, animals or objects.
= Obstacles above the detection range, e.g.
overhanging loads, overhangs or loading
ramps of lorries.
= Pedestrians or animals approaching the vehi-
cle from the side.
= Objects placed next to the vehicle.
Obstacles on the sides are not shown in the fol-
lowing situations, for example:
= You park the vehicle and switch oM the igni-
tion.
= You open the doors.
Aser the engine is restarted, obstacles must be
detected again by driving past them before a new
warning can be issued.
Also observe the system limits of the following
systems:
= Reversing camera ( page 232)
= 360° Camera ( page 236)
Observe the information on vehicle sensors and
cameras; the system otherwise cannot function properly ( page 189).Vehicles with trailer hitch: Parking Assist

road (optionally either les or right)
Active Parking Assist is only an aid. It is not a sub- stitute for your attention to the surroundings. The
responsibility for safe manoeuvring and parking
remains with you. Make sure that no persons, ani- mals or objects etc. are in the manoeuvringrange.
If Active Parking Assist is available, the Ç mes-
sage appears in the driver display. When the sys- tem detects parking spaces, È appears. The
arrows show on which side of the road free park-ing spaces are located. These are then shown in the central display.
When Active Parking Assist is activated, the turn signal indicators are activated based on the calcu-
lated path of your vehicle. When you are entering
or exiting a parking space, the procedure is assis-
ted by acceleration, braking, steering and gear changes.
To start the parking procedure, press the E
button ( page 247).
Active Parking Assist will be cancelled in the fol-
lowing situations:
= You deactivate Parking Assist PARKTRONIC.
= You press the E button again.
= You begin steering.

System limits
If the exterior lighting is malfunctioning, Active
Parking Assist is not available. Also observe the system limits of the following
systems:
= Reversing camera ( page 232)
= 360° Camera ( page 236)
Objects located above or below the detection
range of Active Parking Assist, such as overhang-
ing loads, overhangs or loading ramps of goods
vehicles or the borders of parking spaces, are not
detected during measurement of the parking
space. These are also then not taken into account when calculating the parking procedure. In somecircumstances, Active Parking Assist may there-
fore guide you into the parking space prematurely
or brake too late.
Certain environmental conditions, such as snow- fall or heavy rain, may lead to a parking space
being measured inaccurately. Parking spaces that are partially occupied by trailer drawbars might
not be identiNed as such or be measured incor-
rectly. Only use Active Parking Assist on level,
high-grip ground.246Driving and parking

&WARNING Risk of accident due to objects
located above or below the detection
range of Active Parking Assist
If there are objects above or below the detec-
tion range, the following situations may arise:
= Active Parking Assist may steer too early.
= The vehicle may not stop in front of these
objects.
This could cause a collision.
In these situations, do not use Active Parking Assist.
Active Parking Assist can also display unsuitable
parking spaces, e.g. parking spaces in which
parking is not permitted or parking spaces on unsuitable surfaces.
Do not use Active Parking Assist in the following
situations:
= In extreme weather conditions such as ice,
packed snow or in heavy rain.
= When transporting a load that protrudes
beyond the vehicle.
= If the parking space is on a steep downhill or
uphill gradient.
= When snow chains are Ntted.
= When a trailer or bicycle rack is attached.
= Directly aser a tyre change or when spare
tyres are Ntted.
= If the tyre pressure is too low or too high.
= If the suspension is out of alignment, e.g. aser
bottoming out on a kerb.
= On steep inclines of more than approximately
15%.q Parking with Active Parking AssistPress button 1.Driving and parking247

cally when the parking procedure begins. You are
responsible for selecting the turn signal indicator in accordance with the traPc conditions. If neces-
sary, select the turn signal indicator accordingly.
&WARNING Risk of accident due to vehicle
swinging out while parking or pulling out
of a parking space
While parking or exiting a parking space, the
vehicle swings out and can drive onto areas of
the oncoming lane.
This could cause you to collide with objects or
other road users.
Pay attention to objects and other road
users.248Driving and parking
