Notes on noise or unusual handling characteris-tics
Make sure there are no vibrations, noises orunusual handling characteristics when the vehicle
is in motion. This may indicate that the wheels or
tyres are damaged. Hidden tyre damage could
also be causing the unusual handling characteris- tics.
If you suspect that a tyre is defective, reduce your speed immediately and have the tyres and wheels
checked at a qualiNed specialist workshop.
Notes on regularly inspecting wheels and tyres
&WARNING Risk of injury due to damaged
tyres
Damaged tyres can cause tyre pressure loss.
Check the tyres regularly for signs of
damage and replace any damaged tyres
immediately.&WARNING Risk of aquaplaning due to
insuPcient tyre tread
*nsuPcient tyre tread will result in reduced
tyre grip.
The risk of aquaplaning is increased on wet
roads, especially when the speed of the vehi-
cle is not adapted to suit the conditions.
Thus, you should regularly check the
tread depth and the condition of the
tread across the entire width of all tyres.
Minimum tread depth for:
= Summer tyres: 3 mm
= M+S tyres: 4 mm
For safety reasons, replace the tyres
before the legally-prescribed limit for the minimum tread depth is reached.
Carry out the following checks on all wheels regu-larly, at least once a month or as required, forexample, prior to a long journey or driving oM-
road
= Check the tyre pressure ( page 350).
=
Visually inspect wheels and tyres for damage.
= Check the valve caps.
= Visual check of the tyre tread depth and the
tyre contact surface across the entire width.
The minimum tread depth for summer tyres is
3 mm and for winter tyres 4 mm.
Notes on snow chains
&WARNING Risk of accident due to incor-
rect snow chain Ntting
If you have Ntted snow chains to the front
wheels, the snow chains may drag against the
vehicle body or chassis components.
This could cause damage to the vehicle or the
tyres.
Never Nt snow chains on the front
wheels.Only Nt snow chains on the rear wheels
in pairs.Wheels and tyres349

*NOTE Damage to components of the vehi-
cle body or chassis due to Ntted snow
chains
If you Nt snow chains to the front wheels of
4MATIC vehicles, you may damage compo-
nents of the vehicle body or chassis.
Only Nt snow chains to the rear wheels
of 4MATIC vehicles.
Observe the following notes when using snow
chains:
= Snow chains are only permissible for certain
wheel/tyre combinations. You can obtain
information about this from a Mercedes-Benz
Service Centre.
= For safety reasons, only use snow chains that
have been speciNcally approved for your vehi-
cle by Mercedes-Benz, or snow chains with the same quality standard.
= If snow chains are Ntted, the maximum per-
missible speed is 50 km/h.
= Vehicles with Active Parking Assist: do not use
Active Parking Assist when snow chains are
Ntted.%You can permanently limit the maximum
speed for driving with winter tyres
( page 200).%You can deactivate ESP n
to pull away
( page 194). This allows the wheels to spin,
achieving an increased driving force.
Tyre pressure
Notes on tyre pressure
&WARNING Risk of accident due to insuP-
cient or excessive tyre pressure
Tyres with either too low or too high a pres-
sure present the following hazards:
=
the tyres could burst
=
the tyres could wear excessively and/or
unevenly
= the driving characteristics as well as steer-
ing and braking characteristics may be
severely impairedObserve the recommended tyre pres-
sures and check the tyre pressures of all
tyres including the spare wheel:
=monthly
= if altering the load on the vehicle
= prior to long journeys
= if the operating conditions change, for
example when driving oM-road
Adjust the tyre pressure where neces-
sary.
Tyre pressure which is too high or too low can:
= Shorten the service life of the tyres.
= Cause increased tyre damage.
= Adversely aMect driving characteristics and
thus driving safety, e.g. due to aquaplaning.
350Wheels and tyres

&WARNING Risk of accident due to repea-
ted pressure drop in the tyres
The wheels, valves or tyres could be damaged.
Too low a tyre pressure can lead to the tyres
bursting.
Examine the tyres for foreign objects.Check whether the tyre has a puncture
or the valve has a leak.If you are unable to rectify the damage,
contact a qualiNed specialist workshop.
Information on the recommended tyre pressure
for the vehicle's factory-Ntted tyres can be found
on the tyre pressure table on the inside of the fuel
Nller Oap ( page 351).
Use a suitable pressure gauge to check the tyre
pressure. The outer appearance of a tyre does not
permit any reliable conclusion about the tyre pres-
sure.
Only correct tyre pressures when the tyres are
cold. Conditions for cold tyres:
= The vehicle has been parked with the tyres out
of direct sunlight for at least three hours.
= The vehicle has travelled less than 1.6 km.
The vehicle's tyres heat up when driving. As the
temperature of the tyres increases, so too does
the tyre pressure.
Vehicles with tyre pressure monitoring systems:
you can also see the tyre pressure in the driver's display.
Notes on trailer operation
Always inOate the rear axle tyres to the recom-
mended tyre pressures on the tyre pressure table
for increased load.
Tyre pressure table
The tyre pressure table is on the inside of the fuel Nller Oap.If one or more tyre sizes precede a tyre pressure,
the following tyre pressure information is only valid for those tyre sizes and their respective loadcondition.
If the preceding tyre sizes are complemented by the 0091 symbol, the tyre pressure information
following shows alternative tyre pressures. Fuel
consumption may then increase slightly.
Wheels and tyres351

The load conditions "partially laden" and "fully
laden" are deNned in the table for diMerent num-
bers of passengers and amounts of luggage. The actual number of seats may diMer from this.
Tyre pressure monitoring system
qFunction of the tyre pressure monitoring sys-
tem
The system checks the tyre pressure and the tyre temperature of the tyres Ntted to the vehicle by
means of a tyre pressure sensor.
The tyre pressure and the tyre temperature
appear in the driver's display ( page 352).
If there is a substantial pressure loss or if the tyre
temperature is excessive, you will be warned with display messages ( page 516) or the 0077
warning lamp in the instrument cluster
( page 538).
The tyre pressure monitoring system is only an
aid. It is the driver's responsibility to set the tyre
pressure to the recommended cold tyre pressure
suitable for the operating situation.
In most cases, the tyre pressure monitoring sys- tem will automatically update the new reference
values aser you have changed the tyre pressure.
You can, however, also update the reference val- ues by restarting the tyre pressure monitoringsystem manually ( page 353).
System limits
The system may be impaired or may not function
particularly in the following situations:
= incorrect reference values were taught in
= sudden pressure loss caused by a foreign
object penetrating the tyre, for example
= there is a malfunction caused by another radio
signal source
q Checking the tyre pressure with the tyre pres-
sure monitoring system
Requirements:
= The vehicle is switched on.
Driver display: 4 © 5
ServiceSelect Tyre pressure and conNrm with 0076.One of the following displays appears:
= Current tyre pressure of each wheel:
=Tyre pressures will be displayed after a few
minutes of driving
= Tyre pressure monitor active : the teach-in
process of the system is not yet complete. The
tyre pressures are already being monitored.
Compare the tyre pressure with the recom-
mended tyre pressure for the current operat-
ing condition ( page 351). Additionally,
observe the notes on cold tyres ( page 350).352Wheels and tyres

%The values displayed in the driver display maydeviate from those of the tyre pressure gauge
as they refer to sea level. At high elevations,
the tyre pressure values indicated by a tyre
pressure gauge are higher than those shown
by the driver display. In this case, do not reduce the tyre pressure.
Bear in mind the following related topic:
= Notes on tyre pressure ( page 350)
q Restarting the tyre pressure monitoring system
Requirements: = The recommended tyre pressure is correctly
set for the respective operating status on each
of the four wheels ( page 350).
Restart the tyre pressure monitoring system in the
following situations:
= The tyre pressure has changed.
= The wheels or tyres have been changed or
newly Ntted.

sage.Select Yes and conNrm the restart with 0076.
The driver display shows the Tyre pressure
monitor restarted message.
Current warning messages are deleted and
the yellow 0077 warning lamp goes out.
Aser you have been driving for a few minutes,
the system checks whether the current tyre
pressures are within the speciNed range. The
current tyre pressures are then accepted as
reference values and monitored.

Wheel change
Notes on selecting, Ntting and replacing tyres
&WARNING Risk of injury through incorrect
sizes of wheels and tyres
If wheels and tyres of the wrong size are Ntted,
the wheel brakes or components in the brake
system and in the wheel suspension may be
damaged.
Always replace wheels and tyres with
those that fulNl the speciNcations of the
original part.
For wheels, pay attention to the following:
= Designation
= Type
For tyres, pay attention to the following: = Designation

Wheels and tyres353

&WARNING Risk of injury through exceed-
ing the speciNed tyre load-bearing capa-
city or the permissible speed rating
Exceeding the load-bearing capacity of the
tyres can lead to tyre damage and could cause
the tyres to explode.
Therefore, only use tyre types and sizes
approved for your vehicle model.Observe the tyre load-bearing capacity
rating and speed rating required for your vehicle.*NOTE Vehicle and tyre damage through
tyre types and sizes that have not been
approved
For safety reasons, only use tyres, wheels and
accessories which have been specially
approved by Mercedes-Benz for your vehicle.
These tyres are specially adapted to the active
safety systems, such as ABS, ESP n
and
4MATIC, and marked as follows:
= MO = Mercedes-Benz Original
= MOE = Mercedes-Benz Original Extended
(run-Oat tyres only for certain wheels)
= MO1 = Mercedes-Benz Original (only cer-
tain AMG tyres)
Otherwise, certain properties, such as han-
dling characteristics, vehicle noise emissions,
consumption, etc. could be adversely aMec-
ted. Furthermore, other tyre sizes could result
in the tyres rubbing against the body and axle
components when loaded. This could result in
damage to the tyre or the vehicle.
Only use tyres, wheels and accessories that
have been checked and recommended by
Mercedes-Benz.*NOTE Risk to driving safety from retrea-
ded tyres
Retreaded tyres are neither tested nor recom-
mended by Mercedes-Benz, since previous
damage cannot always be detected on retrea-
ded tyres.
For this reason driving safety cannot be guar-
anteed.
Do not use used tyres if you have no information about their previous usage.*NOTE Possible wheel and tyre damage
when driving over obstacles
Large wheels have a smaller section width. As
the section width decreases, the risk of
wheels and tyres being damaged when driving
over obstacles increases.
Avoid obstacles or drive especially care-
fully.Reduce your speed when driving over
kerbs, speed bumps, manhole covers
and potholes.354Wheels and tyres

Avoid particularly high kerbs.*NOTE Possible wheel and tyre damage
when parking on kerbs or in potholes
Parking on kerbs or in potholes may damage
the wheels and tyres.
If possible, park only on Oat surfaces.Avoid kerbs and potholes when parking.*NOTE Damage to electronic component
parts from the use of tyre-Ntting tools
Vehicles with a tyre pressure monitoring sys-
tem: electronic component parts are located
in the wheel. Tyre-Ntting tools should not be
applied in the area of the valve.
The tools could damage the electronic compo-
nent parts.
Have the tyres changed at a qualiNed
specialist workshop only.*NOTE Damage to summer tyres at low
ambient temperatures
At low ambient temperatures, tears could form
when driving with summer tyres, causing per-
manent damage to the tyre.
At temperatures below 7 °C use 004D
M+S tyres.
Accessory parts which are not approved for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz, or which are not used
correctly, can impair the operating safety.
Before purchasing and using non-approved acces-
sories, visit a qualiNed specialist workshop and
enquire about:
= Suitability
= Legal stipulations
= Factory recommendations
&WARNING Risk of accident with high per-
formance tyres
The special tyre tread in combination with the
optimised tyre compound means that the risk
of skidding and hydroplaning on wet roads is
increased.
In addition, the tyre grip is greatly reduced at
a low outside temperature and tyre running
temperature.Switch on the ESP n
and adapt your driv-
ing style accordingly.Use 004D M+S tyres at outside tempera-
tures of less than 10 °C.Only use the tyres for their intended pur-
pose.
Observe the following when selecting, Ntting and
replacing tyres:
= Country-speciNc requirements for tyre
approval that deNne a speciNc tyre type for
your vehicle.
= Furthermore, the use of certain tyre types in
certain regions and areas of operation can be
highly beneNcial.
= Only use tyres and wheels of the same type
(summer tyres, winter tyres, MOExtended
tyres) and the same make.
Wheels and tyres355

=Only Nt wheels of the same size on one axle
(les and right).
It is only permissible to Nt a diMerent wheel
size in the event of a Oat tyre in order to drive
to the specialist workshop.
= Do not make any modiNcations to the brake
system, the wheels or the tyres.
The use of shims or brake dust shields is not
permitted and may invalidate the vehicle's
general operating permit.
= Vehicles with a tyre pressure monitoring sys-
tem: all Ntted wheels must be equipped with
functioning sensors for the tyre pressure mon-
itoring system.
= At temperatures below 7 °C use winter tyres
or all-season tyres marked 004D M+S for all
wheels.
Winter tyres provide the best possible grip in
wintry road conditions.
= For M+S tyres, only use tyres with the same
tread.
= Observe the maximum permissible speed for
the M+S tyres Ntted. If the tyre's maximum speed is below that of
the vehicle, this must be indicated by an
appropriate label in the driver's Neld of vision.
= Run in new tyres at moderate speeds for the
Nrst 100 km.
= Replace the tyres aser six years at the latest,
regardless of wear.
= When replacing with tyres that do not feature
run-Oat characteristics: vehicles with
MOExtended tyres are not equipped with a TIREFIT kit at the factory. Equip the vehiclewith a TIREFIT kit aser replacing with tyres
that do not feature run-Oat characteristics,
e.g. winter tyres.%You can permanently limit the maximum
speed for driving with winter tyres
( page 200).
For more information on wheels and tyres, con-
tact a qualiNed specialist workshop.
Be sure to also observe the following further rela-
ted subjects:
= Notes on tyre pressure ( page 350)
= Tyre pressure table ( page 351)
=
Notes on the emergency spare wheel
( page 362)
Notes on interchanging wheels
&WARNING Risk of injury through diMerent
wheel sizes
Interchanging the front and rear wheels can
severely impair the driving characteristics.
The disk brakes or wheel suspension compo-
nents may also be damaged.
Only interchange the front and rear wheels if the wheels and tyres have the
same dimensions.Interchanging the front and rear wheels if the
wheels or tyres have diMerent dimensions can
render the general operating permit invalid.
The wear patterns on the front and rear wheels
diMer
= front wheels wear more on the tyre shoulder
= rear wheels wear more in the centre of the
tyre
356Wheels and tyres

Do not drive with tyres that have too little tread
depth. This signiNcantly reduces traction on wet
roads (aquaplaning).
On vehicles with the same front and rear wheel size, you can interchange the wheels every 5000 to 10,000 km, depending on the wear.Ensure the direction of rotation is maintained for
the wheels.
Observe the instructions and safety notes on
"Changing a wheel" when doing so ( page 357).
Notes on storing wheels
When storing wheels, observe the following notes:
= Aser removing wheels, store them in a cool,
dry and preferably dark place.
= Protect the tyres from contact with oil, grease
or fuel.
Overview of the tyre-change tool kit
