undesired operation of the device."
Diagnostics connection
The diagnostics connection is only intended
for the connection of diagnostic equipmentat
a qualified specialist workshop.
GWARNING
If you connect equipment to the diagnostics
connection in the vehicle, it may affect the
operationofthe vehicle systems. As a result,
the operating safety of the vehicle could be
affected. There is a risk of an accident.
Do not connect any equipment to a
diagnostics connection in the vehicle.
GWARNING
Objects in the driver's footwell can restrict the
pedal travel or obstructadepressed pedal.
The operating and road safety of the vehicle
is jeopardized. There is a risk of an accident.
Make sure that all objects in the vehicle are
stowed correctly, and that they cannot enter
the driver's footwell. Install the floormats
securely and as specified in order to ensure
sufficientclearance for the pedals. Do not use
loose floormats.
!If the engine is switched off and
equipmentonthe diagnostics connection
is used, the starter battery may discharge.
Connecting equipment to the diagnostics
connection can lead to emissions monitoring
information being reset, for example. This
may lead to the vehicle failing to meet the
requirements of the next emissions test
during the main inspection.
Qualified specialist workshop
An authorized Mercedes-BenzCenter is a
qualified specialist workshop. It has the
necessary specialist knowledge, tools and
qualifications to correctly carry out the work
required on your vehicle. This is especially the
case for work relevant to safety.
Observe the notes in the Maintenance
Booklet.
Always have the following work carried out at
an authorized Mercedes-BenzCenter:
Rwork relevant to safety
Rservice and maintenance work
Rrepair work
Ralterations, installation work and
modifications
Rwork on electronic components
Correct use
If you remove any warning stickers, you or
others could fail to recognize certain dangers.
Leave warning stickers in position.
Observe the following information when
driving your vehicle:

Theft deterrent locking system
Immobilizer
The immobilizerprevents yourvehicle from
being started without the correct SmartKey.
XTo activate:remove the SmartKey from
the ignition lock.
XTo deactivate:switch on the ignition.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. The
engine can be started by anyone with a valid
SmartKey that is left inside the vehicle.
iThe immobilizer is always deactivated
when you start the engine.
In the event that the engine cannot be
started when the starter battery is fully
charged, the immobilizer may be faulty.
Contactanauthorized Mercedes-Benz
Centerorcall 1-800-FOR-MERCedes (in the
USA) or 1-800-387-0100 (in Canada).
ATA (anti-theft alarm system)
XTo arm:lockthe vehicle with the
SmartKey.
Indicator lampflashes. The alarm
system is armed after approximately
15 seconds.
XTo disarm:unlock the vehicle with the
SmartKey.
or
XInsert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
Avisual and audible alarm is triggered if the
alarm system is armed and you open:
Rthe vehicle with the mechanical key
Ra door
Rthe trunk lid
Rthe hood
XTo stop the alarm:insert the SmartKey
into the ignition lock.
The alarm is switched off.
or
XPress the or\nbutton on the
SmartKey.
The alarm is switched off.
The alarm is not switched off, even if you
close the open door that triggered it, for
example.
iIf the alarm stays on for more than
30 seconds, the mbraceemergency call
system automatically sendsamessage to
the Customer Assistance Center by text
message or data connection.The
emergency call system sends the message
provided that:
Ryou have subscribed to the mbrace
service.
Rthe mbrace service has been activated
properly.
Rthe necessary mobile phone network is
available.

If you do not open the vehicle within
approximately 40 seconds of unlocking:
Rthe vehicle is locked again.
Rthe theft deterrent locking system is armed
again.
XTo lockcentrally:press button.
The SmartKey centrally locks/unlocks:
Rthe doors
Rthe trunk lid
Rthe fuel filler flap
The turnsignals flash oncewhen unlocking
and three times when locking.
iWhen it is dark, the surround lighting also
comes on if it is activated in the on-board
computer (Ypage 207).
iYou can also set an audible signal to
confirm that the vehicle has been locked.
The audible signal can be activated and
deactivated using the on-board computer
(Ypage 208).
XTo open the trunk lid automatically:
press and hold buttonuntil the trunk lid
opens (Ypage 81).
Changing the settings of the locking
system
You can change the settings of the locking
system. When you then unlock the vehicle
only the driver's door and the fuel filler flap
are unlocked. This is useful if you frequently
travel on your own.
XTo change the setting:press and hold
down the and\nbuttons
simultaneously for approximately six
seconds until the battery check lamp
(Ypage 74) flashes twice.
iIf the setting of the locking system is
changed within the signal range of the
vehicle, pressing the\nor button:
Rlocks or
Runlocks the vehicle
The SmartKey now functions as follows:
XTo unlock the driver's door:press the
button once.
XTo unlock centrally:press the
button twice.
XTo lock centrally:press the\nbutton.
XTo restore the factory settings:press
and hold down the and\nbuttons
simultaneously for approximately six
seconds until the battery check lamp
flashes twice (Ypage 74).
Mechanical key
General notes
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered (Ypage 70).
There are several ways to turn off the alarm:
XPress the or\nbutton on the
SmartKey.
or
XInsert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
If you unlock the vehicle using the mechanical
key, the fuel filler flap will not be unlocked
automatically.
XTo unlock the fuel filler flap:insert the
SmartKey into the ignition lock.

XPush release catchin the direction of
the arrow and at the same time remove
mechanical keyfrom the SmartKey.

SmartKey battery
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Batteries contain toxic and corrosive
substances. If batteries are swallowed, it can
result in severe health problems. There is a
risk of fatal injury.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children. If
a battery is swallowed, seek medical attention
immediately.
The SmartKey batteries contain perchlorate
material, which may require special handling
and regard for the environment. National
guidelines must be observed during disposal.

Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have
the batteries replaced at a qualified specialist
workshop.
Checking the battery
XPress the\nor button.
The battery is working properly if battery
check lamplights up briefly.
The battery is discharged if battery check
lampdoes not light up briefly.
XChange the battery (Ypage 74).
iIf the SmartKey battery is checked within
the signal reception range of the vehicle,
pressing the\nor button:
Rlocks or
Runlocks the vehicle
iYou can get a battery at any qualified
specialist workshop.
Replacing the battery
You require a CR 2025 3 V cell battery.
XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Ypage 73).
XPress mechanical keyinto the opening
in the SmartKey in the direction of the
arrow until battery tray coveropens.
When doing so, do not hold covershut.
XRemove battery tray cover.

XRepeatedly tap the SmartKey against your
palm until battery"falls out.
XInsertthe new battery with the positive
terminal facing upwards. Use a lint-free
cloth to do so.
XMake sure that the surface of the battery is
free from lint, grease and all other forms of
contamination.
XInsert the front tabs of battery tray
coverand then press to close it.
XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
XCheck the function of all SmartKey buttons
on the vehicle.

Problems with the SmartKey

You cannot lock or
unlock the vehicle
using the SmartKey.
The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged.
XTry again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control
function of the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the
driver's door handle from close range and press the or
\nbutton.
If this does not work:
XCheck the SmartKey battery and replace it if necessary
(Ypage 74).
XUnlock (Ypage 79) or lock (Ypage 79) the vehicle using the
mechanical key.
There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
XTry again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control
function of the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the
driver's door handle from close range and press the /
\nbutton.
The SmartKey is faulty.
XUnlock (Ypage 79) or lock (Ypage 79) the vehicle using the
mechanical key.
XHave the SmartKey checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
You have lost a
SmartKey.
XHave the SmartKey deactivated at a qualified specialist
workshop.
XReport the loss immediately to the vehicle insurers.
XIf necessary, have the locks changed as well.
You have lost the
mechanical key.
XReport the loss immediately to the vehicle insurers.
XIf necessary, have the locks changed as well.

XSwitch off non-essential consumers, e.g. seat heating or interior
lighting, and try to start the engine again.
If this does not work:
XCheck the starter battery and charge it if necessary
(Ypage 299).

XJump-start the vehicle (Ypage 303).

XConsult a qualified specialist workshop.
The engine cannot be
started using the
SmartKey.
The steering lock is mechanically blocked.
XRemove the SmartKey and reinsert it into the ignition lock. While
doing this, turn the steering wheel in both directions.
Doors
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could:
Ropen the doors, thus endangering other
people or road users.
Rget out and disrupt traffic.
Roperate the vehicle's equipment.
Additionally, children could set the vehicle in
motion if, for example, they:
Rrelease the parking brake.
Rshifting the automatic transmission out of
park positionP
RStart the engine.
There is a risk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children.
GWARNING
If persons, particularly children are subjected
to prolonged exposure to extreme heat or
cold, there is a risk of injury, possibly even
fatal. Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.
You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the
loading guidelines (Ypage 254).
Unlocking and opening doors from
the inside
iWhen a door is opened, the side window
on that side opens slightly. When the door
is closed, the side window closes again.
!The side windows will not open/close if
the battery is discharged or if the side
windows have iced up. It will then not be
possible to close the door. Do not attempt
to force the door closed. You could
otherwise damage the door or the side
window.

Emergency release
If the trunk lid can no longer be opened from
outside the vehicle, use the emergency
release on the inside of the trunk lid.
!The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
iThe opening dimensions of thetrunk lid
can be found in the "Vehicle data" section
(Ypage 351).
You can reach the emergency release via the
trunk. Fold the rear backrests forward
(Ypage 258).
XInsert suitable tool, e.g. a screwdriver,
horizontally on the left-hand side into
emergency release slot.
XPush toolevenly in the direction of the
arrow and open the trunk lid.
iWhen you lock the vehicle (Ypage 79),
the trunk is also locked.
Emergency release button
You can open the trunk lid from inside the
vehicle with the emergency release button.
XPress emergency release buttonbriefly.
The trunk lid unlocks and opens.
The trunk lid can be unlocked and opened
with the trunk lid emergency release when
the vehicle is stationary or while driving.
The trunk lid emergency release does not
open the trunk lid if the battery is
disconnected or discharged.
Trunk lid emergency release light:
Remergency release buttonflashes for
30 minutes after the trunk lid is opened
Remergency release buttonflashes for
60 minutes after the trunk lid is closed.
Side windows
Important safety notes
GWARNING
While opening the side windows, body parts
in the closing area could become trapped.
There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure. If
somebody becomes trapped, release the
switch or press the switch to open the side
window again.
GWARNING
If children operate the side windows they
could become trapped, particularly if they are
left unsupervised. There is a risk of injury.
Activate the override feature for the rear side
windows. When leaving the vehicle, always
